12oz can, canned 01/31/19, batch 201416 "Smilodon Fatalis". Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: Hazy translucent golden yellow. Rocky persistent thick white foam, with lots of fine lacing all over the glass.

Smell: Peach, tropical fruit.

Taste: Nicely hoppy - lots of citrus bitterness complimented with peach and mango. Bready malt sweetness present for balance.

Mouthfeel: Smooth - nicely thick - approaching creamy. Good carbonation. Definitely sticky on the teeth with all the hop oils.

Overall / Drinkability: A delightful flavorful DIPA - far more fruit and citrus flavors than bitterness such that I'd almost call it a New England style IPA. Easily drinkable - I would not mind another one right now. I think my only other comment is that the name of this beer doesn't live up to the experience in that you'd expect something harsher and more fierce, and that's not what this beer is going for. It's a well crafted DIPA - not at all harsh or a palate wrecker.

Golden, clear and an ipa should be. Head is white and disperses quickly. Not much lacing. Above average beer in today’s market. I like it a lot.

Tropical and dank at the same time, with bitter pomelo pith, papaya, lemongrass, and blueberry notes. Pours moderately clear, with two fingers of head from an aggressive pour. Distinctive, especially given today's trends in 2019.

Pours hazy light yellow/amber with a medium to large head and lots of carbonation. Smell is mostly mango.

Taste is mango with more fruit skin / hop resin bitterness.

Mouthfeel is light and dry. Overall, nice beer.

I got a four pack of this from my lical beer store. It poured a clear yellow with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had hints of citrus peel. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with citrus peel presence. Did have a sweetness to it. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a solid beer.

Thin film of foam from this 12oz can poured into a Fuller's mug. Light biscuit and fresh citrusy hops. Tastes the same with dominating hop citrus. Not too carbonated. Medium body is great for melding the flavors. Goes great with Can's "Tago Mago".

12 oz can

Pours slightly hazy golden. White film for a head.

Smells of citrus, pineapple, coriander, cracker and herbal hop.

Tastes of citrus, zest, cracker, cereal, honey and herbal and spice hops.

Medium body, stinging carbonation on the tongue.

Very good IPA with a balanced punch of flavor and a more dry hop finish. Wood have this again.

Dated 3/15/18 on the bottom on the 12oz can, 5 weeks old.

Pours a mildly unfiltered, almost clear, yellow-golden in the glass with half a finger of quickly dissipating head. First on the nose is a rose-water infused citrus, crisp grapefruit, overly ripened peach with a french toast-esque malt at the end. Taste followed the nose with it's crisp qualities, I'm also detecting a bit of dankness, honey, pine, floral and grassiness. The mouthfeel is light and highly carbonated; for 95 IBUs, I'm not getting much bitterness or drying qualities. You could tell me this was a 6% ABV beer and besides the alcohol legs on the glass, I'd believe it, 8.5% is well hidden. Overall a crisp west coast DIPA, clear and refreshing, but not what I'm looking for.

A - Pale orange, clear with a thin white head, fading to mild lacing.

S - The nose starts with pine and solid spun sugar, mango and peach fruits.

T - Follows the nose, with fruit and resin, pine and mango, peach and malty sweetness. A bright, crisp resolve.

M - Open is brisk, feel may be a touch thin, but shockingly clean, with a close quite brisk and dry, with a subtle build of resin.

O - Superb, drinkable DIPA with lush fruit and clean feel. Delicious.

American IIPA brewed just up the road a bit at Rhinegeist. Poured from a can into a Fibonacci Brewing tulip. Pours light gold and slightly hazy with a finger of coarse white foam. Good retention. On the nose I get some fresh toast, lemon, grapefruit, and pineapple.

Medium body with a firm feel and a well-balanced hoppy flavor that follows the nose well. A little sweet and grainy up front, but that malt is more than ample to support the intense bitter notes. Almost immediately upon tasting the sweetness you get lemon rind and grapefruit juice which combines with the malt to create a pleasant pineapple-juice-like citrusy flavor. Very appetizing and drinkable. Reminds me a bit of Hop Ranch, but with more body.

I've had this beer before, but for some reason hadn't reviewed it. Probably because I hate buying bombers of Pale Ales and IPAs (the value just isn't there - are you reading this Three Floyds?). I'm very happy that Rhinegeist decided to switch to cans and will definitely buy this when it's released.

Canned on 3/15/18. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a light pale golden with a mild haze but still has some clarity to it with some bubbles racing upwards; fluffy eggshell white head that slowly falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have some subtle tropical fruits along with some bread and crackers. Malts are there. The flavors have hints of pineapple, lemon and grapefruit. Some fresh grass along with some subtle hints of pine. Slightly sweet, but nothing crazy at all. Malts do their thing. Moderate bitterness. Finishes juicy. Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of medium-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid DIPA. Solid hop flavors. It might not be anything super crazy, but it's not bad at all. It's nice stuff.

Cloudy yellow-orange with a thin white blanket and really thick, Hawaiian waves of lace.

Smell is dank onion, garlic, and grapefruit.

Taste is vegetal, like broccoli, with grapefruit, orange, dank weeds over a light frothy pillow and semi-dry finish.

Bomber being poured into a Brew Gentlemen tulip glass:

Look: Pours a nice golden yellow color with a slight haze! Roughly about an inch of head present with lacing that has great retention!

Smell: Huge tropical fruit and citrus notes right off the bat! Also some piney and grassy notes present!

Taste: Taste follows the nose for me! Tons of citrus and tropical notes present! Malts are present but are nothing overpowering! Finishes with a slight bitterness which is nice!

Feel: Medium bodied!

Overall: Rock solid DIPA here! This is my first brew from Rhinegeist since they just became available in the Pittsburgh, PA market! This won't be my last as this is fantastic!

Cloudy, dirty gold (with some brown color thrown in). Great ring lace from the modest bar poured head.

Typical grapefruit aroma of a west coast styled IPA. Prickly and citrusy.

Thinnish with a high carbonation level. The malt is dry and only shows up briefly. This is a beer designed to emphasize the hops. They are dry and bitter without a lot of the grapefruit I'd expect.

Pours a hazy dark orange with a white two finger head with nice retention.

Smells fruity. Peach, mango, apricot, citrus.

On the tongue it starts fruity and finishes with nice hop bitterness.

Medium body/carbonation.

This is a world class double IPA! I will be on the lookout for this again.

On-tap 9/11/2016 at Flynn’s in Mansfield, MA, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a light amber color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains citrus, caramelized malts and grassy hops.

T: The taste starts out very sweet with strong flavors of fruity citrus and caramel. Then a strong but not over-powering piney hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is solid 2IPA to drink for a while.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2016 vintage bottling. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, lemon/orange zest, light pine, honey, light caramel/spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, lemon/orange zest, light pine, honey, light caramel/spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, papaya, mango, lemon/orange peel, honey, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an excellent DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A really delicious offering.

I am not normally an IPA drinker, this beer though is really good. It does not have the strong hoppy pine tree taste. Has a fruity taste that comes through the whole time. Very smooth and easy to drink.

On draft into a snifter.

Pours a rusty orange with a small head that dissipates quickly. Clear bodied.

On the nose we have tangerines, peaches, lime rind, and dank pine. Subtle light caramel malts and a touch of bready yeast.

Grapefruit juice and tangerine rind on the tonque with just a hint of sweetness from the malt.

Drying and medium light in body. A bit sticky on the finish.

Awesome citrus flavors and mouthfeel. Probably the best beer I've had from Rhinegeist.

1 PINT, 6 FL OZ bottle
Served in a tulip glass

This beer pours amber with burnt orange highlights and is slightly hazy. It is topped with several inches of beige head that leaves a lot of rocky lacing.

The smell is all malt. This beer is barely over a month old. The hops couldn't have faded that fast could they?

The taste is malty with faded hops.

Medium mouthfeel

What a HUGE disappointment. The release was March 6. There is no way this beer fell off that much in 36 days. This beer had to start out way below average or this was from a release about 9 months ago. It is not good.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip. 2016 vintage.

A deep amber pour with a bright white head. Thin lace bubbles line the sides of the glass. Cotton candy, fresh mango, and ripe peaches highlight the aromas. Sweet malt intertwined with a touch of tropical fruits that is followed up with a boozy finish. Well carbonated and dangerously drinkable at 8.5%. An average DIPA offering from Rhinegeist. Worth a pickup if available.

There are pretty good notes of tropical fruits, like mango, apricot/peach, and something a little ripe and spicey smelling.

All of this falls fairly flat in the taste. I get a lot of grainy malts and sweetness overall, along with some messy fermented fruti alcohol.

I was pretty disappointed with this one. Not a bad beer in general, but just not offering much.
