Pencil Factory, huh. It’s been Washburn years since I’ve been, and they were one of the first up this far. But being in the ‘hood with time and thirst, here I be, again. Waiting on a perpetually late Phil to, you know, call (in these regards, Phil has not changed). As such, I will have a beer or more, in waiting, in protest, or maybe just because it’s Saturday...

On the corner of Greenpoint in Greenpoint, a single room, let your eyes adjust. Brick inner wall and the outers done mostly white painted over black wood slat lowers with some areas partially pressed tinned up. Windows over Franklin and off the corner entrance over Greenpoint. Wide plank wood floors, and a black pressed tin ceiling with matching ductwork. A pair of spinnys down center, drop bumpy lamps tracing the bar and wall mounts otherwise.

‘L’ wood bar with a lip, wide slat wood base, & foot rail on the inside wall, with seating for 15 on stools. Barback is tiered booze on center for a good length, and bookend cash registers; don’t know if just for show. Glass panel cupboards on the ends with probably better bottles, and glassware all shelved below with alt drawer and cupboard space. A long narrow horizontal board over the barback booze lists draft selections, others set vertically on the ends listing happy hours, house drinks, & bottled beer selections (of which there are 6; Bud, Bud Light, Pacifico, Magners, Old Speckled Hen, & Butternuts Snapperhead IPA), and a few more with grilled sandwiches, wine, whiskey, bourbon, & scotch selections.

Nook to the rear with a misfit round table, a 4 stool bar counter space between the nook and the bathroom row, 2 large tables on the outside wall on benches, 2 more across the room to the bar, and another in the windows on common empty bench. Horizontal wine storage cut into wall space, and a single flat in a strangely inconvenient location not easily viewable by most.

2 dark wood tap boxes along the bar hold 20 taps; ½ of which were ‘localish’, in presence or theory, just try not to think too hard about who brews what where (Brooklyn Lager & Radius, Empire IPA, Single Cut Eric ‘More Cowbell’ Milk Stout & Dean ‘Pacific Northwest’ Mahogany Ale, Rockaway Black Gold Stout, Sixpoint Righteous Rye & Sweet Action, Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold & Kolsch, Blue Point Toasted Lager). The other ½ are a mix of craft (Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, Goose Island IPA, Anchor Steam), crafty craftesque craftnot (Shock Top Belgian White), import (Guinness, Stella, Radeberger Pilsner), and cider (Crispin, Strongbow). I drank a Brooklyn Radius (lovely, easy drinking Belgian Pale Ale) and an Anchor Steam (yep, it’s Anchor Steam all right), because I could.

Servers are personable, let me try a bit of this and that before jumping right in, always appreciated. One of them is talking smack about someone named Allison pretty much through. And speak of the devil, she has arrived (she may be Satan, kind of looks the part, too, in a good way). I am surprised by their slight kitchenings. Where do they do that exactly? Why do they do that exactly? Music is happening; it’s light enough in the background that I can’t tell what it is. Are they going for an English/Irish theme? Don’t know. Was it once an actual pencil factory? Yeah, again, don’t know. Cool little place in Greenpoint.
