330ml bottle, poured into tulip glass.

A - rust coloured, clear, pours a frizzy, 2cm thick pale brown head that endures

S - roasted malts, pineapple, hint of toffee. Strong floral notes - like men's cologne

T - nutty, biscuity malts at the start, some grassy notes, with roasted (almost burnt) malt base in the middle. Tropical fruits (passionfruit) and assertive resin bitterness in the middle, abrupt finish.

F - well carbonated for red ale, full bodied, neutral texture

O - well hopped red ale, much more fuller than your typical red ales, which I enjoyed.

Bottle: standard brown 330mL bottle with a decent craft label. A good package for a small operation. Bought from Leura Cellars.

Appearance: pours mid copper in colour with ruby highlights. Fine carbonation visible with a fluffy off-white head that drops to a solid cap. Sporadic lacing. Looks good.

Aroma: a quite overpowering aroma of extremely sharp hops of no specific origin. I'm not sure about this.

Taste: again a sharp and none-too-subtle hop explosion, but one that is quite awkward and up-front bitter with no sweetness to back it up. Interesting, but comes across as pretty amateur.

Aftertaste: the hop bitterness didn't hang about as long as expected. Some biscuit malts do come through on the finish.

Mouth feel: a light- to- moderate body with a far too sharp carbonation. Not brilliant.

Overall: an interesting but overall unbrilliant beer. An overly sharp hop flavour overpowers the malts without much compromise. AN awkward attempt at a Red Ale. Drinkable at least, but not something I would go for again. Add the price of AU$140 a case of 24 x 330mL (2014) and this one's a bit of a joke.

330ml bottle purchased in Auckland.

Pours a pleasant, deep ruby colour, with a filmy, pocked head of pale beige. Body is solid, and the carbonation is fine. Lacing forms in some streaks, but the head itself is pretty sketchy, so there's not much for it to work with. Looks decent though.

Nose is very nice. Pleasantly rich malt basis spliced with a slightly sharp hop tone that stays crisp and bright. The hops turn a little grassy after a while, which is a bit of a shame, but the malt stays pretty smooth without turning grainy as it might have. Some dusty cocoa tones come from the amalgam once the hops flatten out. Overall, it's decent enough.

Taste is surprisingly less solid than everything else was suggesting it would be. Mostly, there's a thinness to the front and middle of the palate, meaning that there's little basis to build upon. Some roasty tones come through on the back, again with more cocoa characters, and a touch of those grassy hops. Fortunately, it doesn't become unbalanced at any point, the malt that does arrive on the back matches the slight late bitterness, but the front is surprisingly empty.

Feel is also a little weak. It's okay, but only okay.

Overall, this is decent enough, but given the other ParrotDog beers I've had (and the fact that I love me a Red Ale), I was expecting this to be a lot better. It's still worth checking out, but it got me a lot less excited than it should have.
