After a long days ride out and back to the Selin’s Grove Brewing Company, and a beer “stock-up” stop at Shangy’s, it made perfect sense to hit the nearby Farmhouse – well according to BA Erica anyways. She was dead right. Quite literally a few minutes drive from Shangys the Farmhouse sits off the road amongst some trees, night had fallen and the exterior was dimly lit, even so, I knew this was going to be special; my beer senses were tingling in the large car lot long before I got inside.

From the outside it looks, well just like a Farmhouse, and once inside it still feels like you are in someone’s house, very homely but for the first time visitor it almost feels too relaxing from the stand point of being informal yet in a strange twist of fate you also feel like this is a seriously up market Restaurant and that you should maybe have a shirt and tie on, and not jeans and sneakers, though you don’t really have to.

Despite the feeling of being ‘under’ dressed, we soon made our way through the front door and were quickly shown the stairs down to the bar area by a very smartly dressed waiter when we asked. Once through a well appointed dining area and down the staircase you are greeted with a lounge area right at the bottom of the stairs, well appointed with a massive comfy sofa and armchairs. To the immediate right an open archway leads you into a small bar area. I was still “unsure” at this stage I have to admit, even though Erica kept reassuring me that this place was the business, it just did not seem like it. Well that was until we decided to avoid the small crowded Bar area which seats only maybe 5 people and took refuge in the lounge area at the bottom of the stairs on the large comfy Sofa. Another smartly dressed waiter appeared and immediately gave us the Beer List……..that was the moment my insecurity vanished….it may well feel like being in an upscale restaurant, but the Beer List rocks, and if you just want to drink only you are welcome to do so.

Beer - Where to start, the list is extremely well laid out for a start, exceptionally easy to follow and well informed it really is a credit to the Farmhouse and a pleasure to read & peruse. There are around 6 taps and 1 Beer Engine. Initially Erica tried the excellent Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter from the tap and I tried the Ossian’s Ale from Inveralmond Brewery Scotland……oh my!!!! Sheer Heaven!!!! Right off the bat I was immensely impressed with both the quality of the Ossian’s Ale and how it was presented…totally perfect. So often in the US I get flat lifeless crap when I ask for a Cask Ale, but not here, it was served to perfection, unlike many US establishments these guys obviously know how use soft and hard spiles and look after Cask Conditioned Ale. The Gonzo was stupendous too. We only had a short stop here, it had been a long day and Erica was driving, despite the utterly marvelous bottled beer list I had another Ossian’s from the Cask such was its perfection. Still, the Beer List has many attributes and it easily runs a highly recommended in the offers stakes. Many US specialties and overseas rarities, aged and vintage cellared brews dot the list like macros in a large supermarket – such is their depth and breadth that you could be forgiven for forgetting just how awesome the listing is. The Belgian offerings are very impressive as indeed are the aged English and US Barleywines. The List is simply too numerous to reel off here, just get here to see it for yourself; it has very few parallels here or overseas.

Service was also top rate – very friendly waiters that were incredibly nice despite their otherwise “posh” projection given their high end attire.

I never had any food here, but I would love to eat here, in fact the next time I’m in town I most certainly will make a bee-line for here and arrive with an empty stomach, the food menu looked extremely inviting.

The Farmhouse is a superb establishment, one seriously incredible beer list, relaxing high quality sophisticated surroundings, fantastic service, comfy candlelit lounge area, a Beer Engine and more vintage beers than your liver can handle……this is a big league winner, and its all of a few minutes from Shangy’s…..its a no-brainer if you are in town.

Thanks to BA Erica for the ride out here, told ya the Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter was good, ya should listen to your elders!!!! ;-)

It has literally taken me 4 years to finally check this place out. Everytime I am in the area, the timing just isnt right. This past weekend I decided enough was enough and off we went for no other reason than to have brunch.

The layout of the place is as advertised. It is a farmhouse and you get that feel as you make your way through the building. I was seated in what felt like was at one time a sunroom. I didnt think it was appropriate to walk around and check the place out. I mean seriously, the place was packed with what looked like the Sunday post-church going crowd. Had I walked into another room of 3 filled tables, I surely would have been frowned upon or laughed at for looking lost.

3 different styles of eggs benedict to choose from and a vintage cellar full of desireable beer. Do I even need to say more? Their selection is fantastic and is in the upper tier of places I have been to.

The service was very proper and professional. My only gripe being that another table was giving the guy some serious shit and i could tell he was stressed/rushed to please them. In his haste, he neglected me sitting with an empty glass for half the duration of my visit. I wanted to have another beer. I even asked for the menu. He delivered that menu, then proceeded to take away my plate and 15 minutes later deliver my check. Ok then... I wont be having a second beer. I guess i just drove 2 hours for a single beer and mediocre food.

Regarding the eats. I am perfectly content with being patient for a well prepared plate of food. But when it takes 45 minutes and i am without a beer, my limits are stretched. When the food was served, the house style eggs benedict were fantastic and worth the wait. The side of smoked ham saw better days though. The ham had no signs of being house smoked. In fact, it hardly had any signa of being ham. You could tell that this skimpy piece of ham sat on the grill for the entire 45 minute duration.

Perhaps my visit was on a bad day. I seemingly built up unreasonable expectations and was let down by my experience. I regret making this trip a destination. If the stars align properly to let me visit while im in the area, I surely will. But I am not going out of my way again anytime soon.

Had great expectations for this place. Things started going downhill though as soon as we arrived. The building is indeed a farm house of sorts. But it is located right on a busy and noisy road. It definitely hurts the atmosphere, especially if you are eating outside. The tables inside were a bit too close together, which I really dislike. The bar is best described as a nano bar. My party chose to eat outside after a round of beers. Very limited outdoor seating and again, its just not as quaint as we had expected. The food was OK, but nothing to write home about and somewhat pricey. As far as beer goes... The bottle list was interesting but not mind blowing as some claim. The tap list was limited to a few offerings. The draft prices were very high and the pours were small. Small pours are really starting to irk me. I had an Old Rasputin for around $7 in maybe an 8 ounce glass. Its beer people... I need at least 12 ounces. I really wanted to like this place, and usually I can force that into happening. But this was a no go and a disappointment for me. Although, we did take a peak at the new banquet type facility they were working on (this review is from notes, summer 2011). This is probably open now, and is no doubt a very nice addition. I may revisit if I'm in the area just to check this out.

My husband and I were looking for a new place to try that wasn't too far out of the way, and I stumbled across The Farmhouse on BA so we drove the one hour to Emmaus. I am pretty bummed that this place isn't closer to us, because the atmosphere is what I would consider PERFECT for drinking and hanging out. No TVs, dark lighting, intimate...perfect. We were the only patrons there which definitely made the experience even better. Very, very small bar of only six seats...not a bad thing in this case. Service was amazing, likely because we were the only two people who our bartender, who was very friendly and knowledgeable, had to attend to. I'm only giving a 4.0 for selection because there were only six mediocre brews on tap, however, their bottle selection and VINTAGE selection is almost unparalleled. WOW. We ended up getting a 1995 Biere de Noel by Saint Sylvestre, which was amazing. Some of the other vintage brews were even more impressive, but obviously expensive. I think there was a 1997 Chimay that was around $80 to give you an idea. Kind of goes with you get what you pay for...where else will you find this stuff?

Food was amazing. I got the BBQ pulled pork, bacon and brie pizza. YUM. It was a good size and not as expensive as some of the other food ("only" $11). Some other dishes, such as the wild boar chops, were closer to $40. This place is obviously "fine dining" and you should come here expecting to drop a lot of money.

Overall, I loved The Farmhouse. I probably won't be in the Emmaus area again any time soon, but if I ever am I will sure as heck be going here for some more excellent service, delicious food and amazing vintage beer!

Loved this place. A very rare find, unless you really know where to look, this place is quite literally in a farmhouse (there's a barn and hayloft right out back). The house has been refurbished into a nice little upscale restaurant, and when the wife and I were first ushered in, I had my qualms. But the waitress took us in around a few bends, through a few doors, and down a few stairs, and my interest was piqued, as we finally arrived at the tiny little bar hidden away in its own little bubble of existence, away from the hustle and bustle of the world. The bar itself had a mere 6 seats, and there were a few tables strewn about, amid bottles of beer rarities that glimmered mysteriously in the dim, gritty light. Talk about intimate. The bartender was a king of his little world down there, very friendly and knowledgeable about all things beer [and scotch]. Six beers on tap and a non-functioning hand-pump, makes for a selection that can't be overly impressive, but considering the size of the bar, you can't really complain. The bottle list kept things interesting, especially the vintage list, where you'll find bottles from all over the world, some dating back to the 90s and even the mid-80s. As such, you'll eventually probably have to dip in to this collection...and as such, you'll probably leave with a lighter wallet. However, there are some good vintage selections for well under $25 for a 750, and that's not bad at all. You won't find like Dark Lord verticals or anything, but there are still some neat things to choose. The food menu didn't offer many selections, but the ones it did offer all seemed very tantalizing. But the prices...ooh, ouch. There are a few reasonable selections, but if your date wants the scallops or boar steak, you're gonna be paying upwards of $40 for said entree. The pizza of the day is a good choice, well priced, well portioned, and very tasty.

Rarely to never do I visit this area of PA, but I loved this bar, and I'd love to go back.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Tucked in the basement of a fantastic restaurant is a hidden gem of a beer bar. The first time I set foot in the six, that's right six stool bar, I though "what the hell is this". I sat down and noticed ten taps with some good stuff on tap. That was the tip of the iceberg. the bartender hands me bottle menu that felt like a novel. Sifting through this beast you notice crazy Belgians some of which aren't brewed anymore. Then you come across there vintage stuff. I was blown away. Cuvee Rene 1994, De Dolle Mad Bitch 2000, Big Foot 1988. Are you kidding me. The service is excellent. The bartender went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. This place is simply amazing.

I found out about the Farmhouse in an issue of DRAFT Magazine a few years ago. It states that it was one of the best bars in Pennsylvania. With that being said I needed to look into the place and go sometime.

The Farmhouse from the outside looks just like the name itself. There is a nice entrance to the building a slightly covered walkway with some vines growing all around. Once inside you can see some really nice paintings on all the walls, each room is a little bit different.

Making your way downstairs you'll find yourself amongst one of the smallest bars I've ever seen. If you're lucky there will be a spot open for you to sit down and enjoy some food or a few rounds of drinks. The look and feel of the bar is quaint and kind of old fashion. The bar is wooden with some pretty comfy stools that have backs on them so you can sit back and relax.

The food selection changes regularly with what ever the chef has chosen for the time being. Of all the food I've had there on several accounts have been quite good. There is still plenty more on the menu that I'll hopefully try to have before it changes again. Most of the food products they have are from local farms and dairies in the area. This gives them the freshest possible produce you can ask for.

The Beers, such an impressive list of beers. They have a really good sense for craft beers. The taps rotate on a decent basis, the bottled selection is massive, and their Vintage Bottles are something extra special but for a price. I seen stuff from Bell's 9000 to Avery's Rumking Ale to 95' Triple Bock. It's a very impressive selection of brews from past or present.

Overall this place is a little expensive but it's well worth it to stop in sometime when you can spare a few extra bucks on a beer that you may never see again. All in all, I have other places that I enjoy a little more than the Farmhouse in the same general area but it's still a really nice place to check out.

I went to the Farmhouse on my birthday after waiting anxiously for like 7 months. It was everything I hoped for and more. We got seated in a private room on the second floor. The atmosphere was very rustic and simple. Not much wall decor but very relaxing. The beer there was great. I even ordered an Oude Beersel Gueuze to go. I had the Filet Mignon for diner, and that and the sides were both excellent. Just the right size portion so as to leave enough room for desert and another few beers.

The bar downstairs is one of my favorites. It's old English style. Very rustic and cozy with a fieplace, show or real? Very big and extensive beer selection. Wish I could try more at once but as they say, I'm only human.

We sat in the lounge area right outside the bar.
It was one of the coolest area that I've ever sipped a Kriek in.

I'm definetly stopping back soon. Get the calander.

Dined here several times, never experienced anything less than an extremely enjoyable evening. Use of seasonal, local ingredients can make quality/selections variable but never dissapointing. New bar menu allows for quick, delicious meals accompanied by an exceptional beer selection. I can highly recommend the Glasbern grass-fed burger with a glass of Life and Limb, the duck confit and goat cheese spring roll is also tastey. Great place to take the spouse if they're not a big fan of the brewer's art, as they also have a serviceable wine list. Staff are friendly and courtious, knows the menu and can be trusted for pairings. Outdoor dining in the warmer months is also very pleasant.

When paired a trip to Shangy's (or "Shangy's The Beer Authority" as they would have it) a mile up the road, this is a beer and food lovers' ideal journey. The Farmhouse was well ahead of its time in pairing top quality beer and gourmet cuisine.

The restaurant is set in a 19th century, uh, farmhouse, with a number of small dining rooms on three floors. We prefer the 7 seat bar in the bottom floor. A beautiful restaurant, though the dining rooms can be a little quiet so you feel the need to talk in a whisper.

Service is very knowledgeable and attentive.

The beer selection is out of this world (and the wine list is pretty good too, though we have only ever looked at it). There are only seven taps but of extremely high quality. On our most recent trip, we had Green Flash IPA, North Coast Pranqster, Port Brewing Serpent (!). Other choices included Triple Karmeliet and Lancaster Milk Stout. There is a more extensive list of aged beers than I have ever seen anywhere. Sierra Nevada Bigfoot going back to the late '80's, many versions of SN Celebration ale and JW Lees (or Thomas Hardy, maybe both). If you have a group you can share a 3L bottle of Hair of the Dog Fred (for only $100) or one of many other big bottles.

The food is very good. The highlights include the cheese plate, duck confit spring rolls and fried panko crusted goat cheese appetizer. The rolls are excellent. The main courses are good but not up to the level they aim for. Dessert rocks.

The place is priced as you would expect for fine dining.

I also need to give a shout out to the clientele here which is as pompous and annoying as any on earth. On an average visit, we will meet one nice couple and be surrounded by obnoxious a**holes the rest of the night. I would appreciate it if someone would open another fancy restaurant in Emmaus with valet parking and a sommelier so some of these people would go there. I guess that's selfish. :-)

This is the kind of place I only go to every once and awhile, because I know I am going to end up spending a lot of money, no matter what I say before I go.
First of all, the atmosphere is wonderful. As Francisweizen said, it has a similar quality to the Kulminator in Antwerp. The bar is on the lower level. It's a small enclave, with a low ceiling, expoed brick, and a pre-Victorian decor. It's not dissimilar to being in a cellar, or a catacombs. The barstaff is always very knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about beer. They do what any good bartender should do. They give you their full attention when you acknowledge that you need them, and otherwise, they leave you alone. If you are after a conversation, though, they are very friendly and interesting. Also, they are willing to go to great lengths to make you happy. On more than one occasion, bartenders at the farmhouse have spent 20 minutes digging through the cellar looking for bottles I wanted.
The selection is great, not because of its size, which is actually a bit smaller than some places in the area. It's selective. They don't have anything that isn't worth your time. There are always interesting drafts. I've never been disappointed with their cask ale. It's always fresh, and it's a legitimate hand pump system.
You'll spend some money, but I have never felt that any of the prices were gouging, or unfair. The legendary $30 Saint Lamvinus 750 is proof of that (though sadly, I think they're all gone). The vintage list is great, and they keep it up to date most of the time.
If you find yourself in Emmaus or the Bethlehem area, you have to come here. It's the best place in PA. Union Jack's is a very close second.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Farmhouse on Mother's Day 2007 with my Mom and brother. We arrived slightly late due to construction traffic coming from South Central PA, but we were seated immediatlely regardless. We were seated in the cozy downstairs bar area with unique bottles and candles illuminating them in the fireplace. The color of the walls was deep crimson and there were stone accents. The atmosphere was very classy and set the tone for the quality meal we enjoyed.

The service was great, as I said we were taken care of promptly and menu items were explained graciously. I asked for a quick family snapshot and the maitre d kindly agreed. There were freshly cut flowers decorating the tables and light jazz adding a pleasing backdrop. We discussed the menu and were able to order and share three uniquely different appetizers.

I ordered a No apologies from Blue Point while my Mom tasted a sweet Pinot Gris from Oregon and my brother enjoyed a Karmeleit Triple. The wine, beer and scotch selections were all dazzling and exciting since the possibilities were endless. The menu was chock full of variety including Duck, Fish, Lamb, Beef, Tempeh and Shellfish. We all enjoyed a separate, epicurean fish specialty. Salmon, Halibut, and Cod with Gulf shrimp were prepared to perfection. I enjoyed the Alaskan cod with Pernod and Saffron sauce atop rays of local asparagus that was tender and not at all chewy.

Beausolai Oysters with citrus mignonette, Manchego creme fraiche ravioli and Tamarind skirt steak were some of the first plate offerings that day. The deserts were just as impressive: Almond Financier with rhubarb and cherries with house made vanilla ice cream, Coconut crusted tart with cream and fresh berries, and Banana bread pudding with caramel and chocolate. The almond cake was moist and had textures that left my mouth stunned.

I left feeling satisfied and happy with such an interesting experience that I am sure we will all remember for food, family and hospitality with excellent libations.I enjoyed every succulent morsel and hope to return very soon

WOW... what an awesome place! I got to visit the Farmhouse during a recent wedding rehearsal/rehearsal dinner for fellow BA AlexJ. Boy am I glad he picked this place to do it.

First off the atmosphere is exceptional. Most of the old stone and wood architecture is still in place. This lends itself to a quaint, yet upscale feel. The service was top notch and the food incredible.

As for the beers, the menu is quite extensive. There are a small number of draft offerings, but none of them dissapoint. There is also one cask ale. These all rotate. The bottled beer list included over 150 different beers, not to mention an amazing selection of vintage beers. There are quite a few well known beers from the 80's & 90's which can be found here. As you can imagine the prices can be a bit steep... but not more than you would expect for a place like this.

I had a great experience here and would definately go back if I were ever in the area again!!

Where do I begin?

My wife and I, in celebration of our fourth wedding anniversary, opted to try this place, one of which we were aware for years, but for whatever reason, never actually patronized. Well...

The atmosphere is cozy and rustic. The inner housing of the establishment just spews of "home". We were promptly seated and introduced to Kristine, our server for the evening. Quite arguably the best service we have ever had.

The menu is not for the faint of the cullinary heart. I opened up with the Southampton May Bock and a starter of the porcini mushroom fettucini with duck confit... Quite possibly the best food I have ever eaten. My wife had a frizze (sp?) salad with a buttermilk blue cheese dressing that ever so lightly kissed the greens. Beautiful.

After that, I took the liberty of partaking in a Schneider Weisse Aventinus, proper glassware and all. Beautiful. We both ordered the New York strip steaks off the menu, which came with roasted asparagus and chive mashed potatoes. The best, most well-prepared steak I have ever had.

After dinner, in my glory, I partook in a Uerige Dopplestike Alt. How could I not?

Somehow I had the Blueberry Financier for dessert - a most and berry filled cake like creation with lemon creme fraiche ice cream. My wife had the berry and rhubarb crisp with cinnamon ice cream. To die for all around.

As if all of that were not enough, we finished our evening with Four Puttanyos (meaning "four varieties of grapes") 1995 Tokaj Aszu, which is a Hungarian digestif... Similar to a mead in its honey rishness, but kicked up through the roof.

The finest dining experience, ever, for us - hands down. Pricey, no doubt. This is not TGI McFunsters here. But the price is well worth it considering the vast beer selection, as well as the precisely and highly well-prepared food here at The Farmhouse. By far, the best dining destination in the Lehigh Valley.

I visited the Farmhouse last Saturday evening with my wife and cousin after visiting UJ's on the Manatawny. What a great night. We had reservations but our table was not ready so the hostess led us down to the cozy bar in the basement level. On my way down to the bar I could tell they would have a great beer selection as there were several Jeroboam's of various beers on shelf. My cousin and I started off with a Jolly Pumpkin Firefly which was very tastey. About 1/2 way through the bottle they came down to let us know that the table was ready and off we were to the food.

The Farmhouse puts you in a tough position with such an extensive beer menu and also a very interesting food menu. I of course had to pay particular attention to the beer menu. If you have no interest in beer, you would still enjoy the Farmhouse as the food was excellent. The appetizers, the entrees and desserts, all great.

But my main focus was the beer. After ordering dinner, my cousin and I both ordered a Rochefort 10, what a treat. The beer menu had such a deep selection of current and vintage bottles including vintages from Thomas Hardy's and Chimay. Although some of the bottles were a bit pricey, you pay for what you get and for something that is 10 to 20 years old, it may be worth it. During dinner we ordered and split a bottle of Cantillon St. Lamvinus which I think was from 2003. I was first suprised to see it on the menu as you don't find this that often but the real suprise was the price...$20!!! I bought a bottle in Virginia at a great beer store and it was $30 and a few beer bars in Philadelphia have this for $50. We ordered the only 2 bottles they had at the Farmhouse. I finished up the night by buying a bottle of 1994 La Trappe Quad. That should be an interesting beer to crack open at some point.

Overall, the Farmhouse was a great time. The atmosphere is very cool and although it appears to be a very fancy and format restaurant, the staff is very polite and a few of them really know their beers and if you ask questions, you will probably run into the fellow that does the beer ordering and he is very interested to see someone that enjoys good beer. The food was excellent and I will definitely go back to try more of the food menu and as much of the beer menu as I could get through.

Anyone who travels to Emmaus to go to Shangy's, just HAS to stop here, seriously. It will no doubt be one of the top beer experiences you will have.

The place itself is very unassuming. An old barn that is used for banquets (I will get back to this), then an old farmhouse turned restaurant. The inside had a rustic, but romantically upscale decor. Service is top notch, almost everyone here can at least feign a decent beer knowledge.

The beer selection is staggering, utterly stupifying. So many vintage barleywines and old ales. Pages of rare and vintage Belgians, and not just the usual stuff either. They have a selection of Flemmish sour ales, Saisons, Bier de Garde, Oud Bruins, unblended Lambics, Quads, etc. The list goes on and on. Draft beers are equally impressive, Old Crusty, OSA, assorted Belgian brews.

I am most familiar w/ this establishment because of the banquet facilities. First off, they regularly host fabulous beer dinners, I have been to several. My family has had about 10 various functions here ranging from wedding rehearsal dinners to anniversary parties. When my sister had her reception there last year beer choices Bell's Two Hearted, Anchor Porter, Brooklyn Lager, and Leffe Blonde. Tell me, when was the last time you drank your fill of Two hearted and Leffe at a family function. Never. Service is excellent for banquets and the food is even better. They have simply unbelievable appetisers for such events.

I love this place. I will continue to visit whenever I go home to visit my folks in Northampton. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You won't be disappointed, I swear!

Well what a hidden Gem this place is... While on a beer road trip, another BA and I made a stop in the town of Emmaus to check this place out, here is what we found:

On the outside this place looks like a normal house, wasn't to sure if this was the place or not but I thought why not give it a try..

The atmosphere when first walking in was a little different than I'm used to, I felt underdressed but the BA Sweatshirt was greeted with a "Nice Sweatshirt" from the Waitress ( good start ). After walking down a small staircase and passing a small lounge there sits a small 4 stool or so bar. Very quiet but very sophisticated.

At first I thought the selection was small but very good, the reason for this is I only looked at the 4 taps and a few bottles in plain view from my barstool. But then I was given this large menu which seemed to go on forever.. Wow Anchor Christmas Beers dating back to 93, and some other great aged beers. The beer list was simply amazing.. The extremely long list of Belgian Beers also caught my attention.

The Service was great, Chad I believe was my bartender. He was very helpful and knew quite a bit about beer, and was informing me of the beer dinners they have and other interesting information. When first ordering a beer I chose the Anchor 93, which he went searching for but couldn't find any. So he went and looked again, but instead of a 93 he pulled out a 92 Christmas. Well thanks... I dont mind having that one instead. The Farmhouse staff was very helpful.
So if you are ever within 2 hours or so of this place, you must make a detour and check it out, I know I will and I'm 5 hrs away. Great Beer, Great Service... Great Bar!

The phone rings and I'm like, "Who'd be calling me upwards of midnight?" Drunk BA's, that's who...
"We were drinking Liefman's Gluhkriek", she says. "What?!?! Where?!?!" "Ahhh, that's for us to know...", she starts. "What?!?! Where?!?!" "Don't you worry now, we know", she replies, and then, "They had a giant Rodenbach..." Okay, now this is just plum mean. "We're not telling", she sings tauntingly, "but maybe we'll take you there sometime". I'm feverish now. What if someone goes there and scaps up that magnum of Rodenbach? How can I protect my lego city on the sea without a second lighthouse?? The straight man in this comedy duo is no help. He's tight lipped, he'll give up no details. I will have to wait...
Months later, the Lehigh Valley beer stint in Easton, PA affords us a great opportunity. Turns out that the Farmhouse is a short ways down the road from Shangy's in Emmaus. It's a stand alone structure, an old 19th century stone farmhouse in a parking lot at the foot of a country club. You enter into the restaurant and you're in a foyer with a bunch of smaller rooms on to one side and a staircase that leads you upstairs to additional seating areas. The decor is walls painted with pastel scenes in yellow and green, rolling fields, trees with sprawling branches lightly leaved, all that. The smaller rooms each hold a few tables in them, very intimate dining. To the rear of the Farmhouse is another staircase, this one leading down below to the cellar.
There's very limited space down there. You're in a small room with benches and a cushy chair or two. Through this room lies the bar area. It's a small 6 seat, "L" shaped bar with a mirror backing. Stone walls, lots of dark wood, low lighting with lit candles, a fireplace over there in the corner, and a couple of tables.
6 taps (Victory Moonglow, Brooklyn East IPA, Avery ESB, Weihenstephaner Korbinian, Leffe Brune, Anderson Valley Oatmeal) and a cask (Bell's Best Brown). Very nice, but the real deal here is the 4 page beer list broken out by style. Much of the first 3 pages of the beer list are the Belgians (Abbey, Belgian Dark Strong, Biere de Garde, Belgian Red, Lambic/Gueuze, Belgian Golden Strong, Farmhouse/Saison, Trappist) and then German (Rauchbier, Bock, Wheat, Eisbock), English & American micro (many unusual selections here).
The 4th page is made up of vintage and large specialty bottles. 7 years of Anchor OSA's back to '93, Hardy's & Lee's Harvest back to '86, 3 years of Rogue Old Crusty ('93-'95), Samichlaus '94 & '95, Sierra Celebration '96, and so on. When I spotted the '87 Liefman Goudenband on the list, I was convinced that it was a typo. Not so. It held up quite nicely. Hey, '97 Liefman Gluhkrieks. I liberated the 1.5 litre magnum of Rodenbach, had to. They had the same size magnum of the Goudenband on the ledge near the fireplace. Hmmmn. And I can only wonder what the 3 litre bottle of Dock Street Barleywine was going for.
Service was pleasant enough, no complaints there. The food menu here seems to be somewhat upscale French. Don't know what I was thinking not snarfing on D's duck rolls app. I'd like to get back here for a full sit down meal (and drink).
A second lighthouse. The city is safe once again.

Update: Getting back here for a full meal only took 3 years, but it was well worth it. There were going to be the 4 of us but Handsome Ed & the Mrs bailed so that just left me and Phil. We took a table in the rear room, seemingly small but holding 6 candlelit tables; 3 squares angled and the others 2 seaters on the inside wall. Wood slat ceilings with track spots, wall mounted glass lamps and matching chandeliers overhead, paneled windows and painted pastel pastures. Very warm and comfortable.
The 6 taps tonight (Liefman’s Goudenband, Southampton Tripel, Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek ’04, Southern Tier Pumpking, Delirium Tremens, Summit Scandia Wit) and a cask (Bluepoint Impy Stout). Any guesses as to what I drank? We both took in the same app, being the Manchengo creme fraiche ravioli (grilled merguez lamb sausage, swiss chard & sage pistou). Very nice. For dinner I had the fennel peppercorn seared pacific yellow fin tuna (Miso braised leeks & Oley Valley shitake mushrooms), and Phil had the pan roasted bronzini fillet with lemon risotto (Olive oil braised celery & Spanish capers). The app and entrees were absolutely fantastic, and I got to be thinking what wonders dessert would bring. I had the incredible caramel & cinnamon ice creams, served with a light wafer, Phil had the Pear Financier with star anise ice cream, also very good. The food was outstanding, the service was on and the overall meal experience was just wonderful. Seriously, the Farmhouse.

Went back here for my last birthday. Food is to die for! Goose liver, Roasted Duck, you name it. Prices are a bit high, but the service and quality more than make up for it! 1995 750's of marriage parfait gueuze from Boon you say? Yup! $19 too, not too shabby (cheaper than the Kulminator!). Desserts are killer as well as all the beverages offered here. Fancy, but not uppity, and definately expensive, but oh-so-reasonable considering how great it is here....GO!

Two words for this amazing beer bar in Emmaus which might hit a note for fellow beer lovers: American Kulminator. This "beer bar" is located in the basement of the swanky-looking restaurant the farmhouse, and although I would never go to the above restaurant in ripped jeans and a t-shirt, you can feel free to do so in this downstairs bar. The atmosphere is awesome as it is an old farm house! Exposed brick, old wood, a small fireplace and a lounge-room just next door with comfy coaches and chairs. Exquisite bathrooms, a few small tables and an itsy-bitsy wooden bar with room for maybe 6 max! The quality of the beers was perfect, and the service was fast and pleasant. This place always has 6 mincros on tap and one on cask! On my last visit they had: Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout, Avery ESB, Brooklyn IPA, Victory Moonglow, two others I can't remember, and Bell's best brown on cask! (although it looked like they were just running the regular keg beer through a beer engine, perhaps we need to get Alex out here to get these people in check?:-) The bottled beer list is absolute insanity as I mentioned before. Tons of rare Belgian bottles, as well as US micros, Germans, and more and than the back page! All vintage beers including Thomas Hardys from 1986-1998, OSA 10 years back or more, quite a few Belgian verticals, Bigfoot vertical, and more! All at pretty reasonable prices to boot! Hey, if you want a 3L 200 Salvator, or a 1.5L "pre-palm" Rodenbach they have those too. I said American Kulminator! Wow, this place is just mind blowing, I can't wait to go back again when I have a big wad of cash in my hands. Oh, I almost forgot, I had a draught Brooklyn IPA to activate my palatte, and than Erica and I had a 99 OSA and a 98 hardy's. The total bill with tip you ask? $20. Works for me! Go here, but please save some of the vintage beers for us!

I was told of this place by a couple of the bartenders at Bethlehem Brew Works. Apparently Malt Advocate holds a lot of their tastings here. What a find!

The bar is located on the lower level of a converted farmhouse adjacent to Indian Creek Country Club a short drive down the road (same road) from Shangy’s. The Farmhouse is an upscale contemporary restaurant filling the entire building. The bar itself is in the back of the building, down a flight of stairs. Before entering the bar you walk through a small lounge with a couple of comfy chairs. Off to the left is an outdoor seating area with a number of tables. The barroom (if you can call it that) is a quaint room with a fireplace, two tables for 2 (3 with extra chairs) and a bar for 6. The décor is wood, kinda classy-rustic, with scattered literature about beer and whisky.

This small bar hosts 6 taps and a beer engine. They seem to have no prejudices with their draft beer selection. Both times I’ve been there all taps were in use including the beer engine. The real star is the bottle list. There are approximately 150 beers from all over the world. Most are of beer-geek caliber. There does seem to be a bias here, leaning towards Germany and Belgium. In addition to a few random “vintage” beers peppering the menu, the back page is almost all vintage verticals. They have Hardy’s back to ’86, Lees Harvest, Old Crusty, Vapeur Pipaix, OSA, and a few others. There oversized bottles include Rodenbach, Salvator, and some others. Killer list. In addition, they offer some relatively odd-ball single malt scotches.

The service can be a bit slow since the credit card machine is somewhere else in the building, my guess in far, far away. The bar manager is very knowledgeable and the other staff recognizes this and isn’t afraid to say that they don’t know something and ask her for assistance. The service, and the food, at least on the bar menu, is quite good.

Note: I’m sure their vintage collection is limited, so please be courteous to others when ordering. I know these things are meant to be purchased, but it probably isn’t necessary to drink all of their old Hardy’s or Old Crusty at one time. Please give others a shot at enjoying this place in all of its glory.

I went to the farm house for a work awards dinner. their is a bar in the basement a bit on the small side no more the 10 people would fit in the bar. they had about six beers on tap (no marco on tap) fullers esb and a rouge and a few others. but the bottle list was 4 pages long. I had a westy 12 oh great even better the great because the company was footing the bill had as esb and a peache lambic a guese. the best selection I have ever seen. I was in heaven. and the company was buying!
