Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Among the mythical characters living in Fairyland, some are more unusual than others. Malcolm, for example, is different because of his accent and his kilt: when it comes to beer, his favourite is Mc CHOUFFE. The delicious flavours of aniseed, liquorice and toffee tickle his taste buds. If you listen to him, he will boast of its ruby sparkle, its smooth bitterness and its strong character, worthy of his native Scotland. Although robust, Mc CHOUFFE goes down as easily as LA CHOUFFE.

ABV varies from time to time.

Pours a rich murky brown color with a surprisingly quick dissipating head. Fine carbonation, consistent with the other variants.

Aroma is a bouquet of dried fruits: cherries, figs, and plums. A definite malt sweetness with some honey character.

Taste is a hybrid between the regular chouffe and a standard brown ale. Some Belgian spice mixes with a strong malt backbone. The malt does tend to mute some of the traditional Belgian character, but it does lend some appealing dark fruit notes.

Overall, the beer is pleasant. Is it better than a Rochefort 10? No, but is does beat most American interpretations. I see this beer pairing well with several different food offerings including a spiced lamb sausage with pickled cauliflower. It gets a 85/100.

Appearance: Poured into a Chalice is a certainly dark brown beer. On top is one finger worth of thick rocky off white to beige head that as it thins out it leaves behind thick lacing.

Aroma: Raisins, dark fruit, brown bread, molasses, dates, ripe banana with traces of plantains.

Taste: Up front is molasses with toffee notes and a light sticky mouthfeel. Ripe banana, dark fruits, dates, raisins. Brown bread rounds it out.

Notes: Well this one is quite tasty the layers of flavor is relatively balanced it's not too over powering either way. It's definitely worth picking up again. Cheers.

perhaps my favorite of these chouffe beers, the darker one, with a deep amber copper look to it, good clarity, and carbonation like a soda pop. smells like a timeless belgian yeast strain, some of the dark candy sugar, and a wonderful spice complex that is hearty, warming, and autumnal to me, clove and allspice, even nutmeg, its all subtle and its all from the yeast, but its outstanding. all of that is there in the flavor too with a little raisin and date sweetness, a rather light body for what this is, and a rush of carbonation that really highlights the dark fruit notes and the spicy yeast. warm alcohol, old wood, toasted marshmallow, english toffee, and even prune or something, its quite complex but its component parts are all quite simple, a wonderful synergy. surprised how light this is with the lesser body and all the bubbles, i could get into some real shaky waters drinking these at the rate that seems natural. full of flavor, old world charm, and classic belgian character, this is a delicious beer, an exemplary specimen of the style, and something i will hopefully be able to source more regularly here in colorado. really quality stuff!

33cl bottle $3.75. Dark reddish-brown. Great lacing on the D'Achouffe glass. Aroma is yeasty, sugary, bread, raisin, fruity. Taste is slight alcohol, yeasty and dark. Good beer but I prefer L'Achouffe.

Beautiful pour with a rich caramel head that disappears shortly. Smells of chocolate and sweet apple. Surprisingly light body for the appearance and ABV. Slight plumb sub layer. No aftertaste.
