Notes / Commercial Description:
The gnomes of Fairyland may be little, but they have big, very big, personalities. HOUBLON CHOUFFE matches their impish spirits. All gnomes, with their innate good taste, are in full agreement about HOUBLON CHOUFFE, which is flavoured by three different types of hops. This India Pale Ale is appreciated for its pronounced bitterness combined with the fruity tones of traditional Achouffe beers: it softens the strongest of characters.

Poured from a 33cl bottle (Best By Date: 01/2019...assuming an 18 month "shelf life," I assume the packaging date to be in May, 2017) into a signature, Houblon Chouffe flute glass.

A- Pours a golden yellow with slight haze and a 2 finger worth of a white, soapy head with amazing retention. Even after the first sip a gentle head maintains thanks to the elongated shape of this (non-nucleated) glass. (4.5)

S- Brasserie D'Achouffe's yeast is known for its spicy and fruity esters. However, it seems that hops are taking a front seat to the yeast esters. The nose is chock full of lemongrass, spice, grapefruit and passionfruit. A bit of a caramel malt is detected once the head subsides a bit, but merely contributes to the melange of aromas. (4.75)

T- This is where things get interesting...the palate is met with a huge slap of hops: tropical fruits (passionfruit, honeydew melon, pineapple), citrus (lemon/lime, grapefruit) and subtle coriander-like spice all contribute to a wonderful flavor profile. Despite the stated ABV at an elevated 9.0%, the alcohol is well hidden and goes undetected. (4.75)

M- Houblon Chouffe falls on the lighter side of medium. The significant carbonation helps to create a light and 'bouncy' mouthfeel while allowing the hop bitterness (of which is quite substantial) to dance on the palate. The finish is absolutely dry increasing its drinkability. (4.75)

O- The team at Brasserie D'Achouffe have themselves a winner in Houblon Chouffe. Purchasing from a grocery store in Belgium (~4.65Euros for a 4-Pack and right after a delivery), stands as the most fresh Houblon Chouffe I will ever sample (since the brewery is too difficult to visit without a car). This is a great way of blending traditional malts and brewing techniques with non-traditional, American hop varietals! (4.75)

It's whether or not you'll drink a beer again, and this one I would drink each and every time. Those of you who like west coast IPAs, this one won't make your bitter buds happy, but looking for a well balanced not too sweet, not too hoppy beer, this is the one for you.

On top of it all, it's got nice malts, nice body and a high ABV.

Vintage optics - aroma has a nice, mild Belgian yeast & earthy hop combo. Taste is very well balanced - black pepper, black tea, biscuit, and the hops are smartly interlaced with the beer to provide definition (vine, mild bitterness, European) without overwhelming.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a ruddy brown color with a one finger white foamy head that quickly dissipated leaving some clingy milky lacing. The smell reminded me of apple pie with some light Belgian spices initially. Light raisin cake also warms into the blend with an underscore of some citrusy fruits after further warming. The taste was moderately sweet through the apple and pie-like to raisin cake-like qualities. The aftertaste carries the apples and raisins to combine into the breadiness nicely. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light and allows a big sticky breadiness laying over on my tongue. Overall, it definitely works as a Tripel, or Belgian IPA (I guess - if that's what BA says), I dunno - just drink it.

Poured from a bottle to an Achouffe tulip
A - Hazy gold with a white head
S - Toffee malts with resin and grapefruit hops
T - This is greatly balanced, the grapefruit does not crush all other flavors
M - Correctly carbonated
O - The perfect balance between a very fruity IPA and a Belgian strong ale, interesting mix!

Pours bright yellow with some orange to it with a thick head and sticky lacing. Smells so nice, citrus, sweet floral, hops, and honey. The taste is scary good, very smooth sweet hops notes blended with juicy citrus, floral tones, and minor dryness on finish. This is a light to medium beer and is exceptional on a hot day. I am amazed at the depth of flavor on this beer, it has it all and more, top notch.

I am biased, apologize for the diminished review, more Belgian phenols and esthers than I would prefer, but great appearance and showcase of the style combination
