Cherry ChouffeCherry Chouffe

Brewed by:
Brasserie d'Achouffe

Style: Fruit and Field Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The gnomes love Achouffe beers. But they also appreciate the juicy cherries that grow in their land of fairies. This year, the CHOUFFE gnomes gathered the cherries and stored them in the brewery loft. The old ceiling collapsed under the weight of the fruit. The cherries fell into a vat of Mc CHOUFFE that was being prepared. The mischievous gnomes said nothing about it. Surprised to discover a glowing red beer with a fruity taste, the Master Brewer finally decided to transfer it to barrels.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

A- Pours a cherry red color that has big tinges of rusty gold, orange and shiny copper and it is clear....very clear! The head is frothy, about two fingers thick to start with modest retention and has a lovely cherry blossom hue to it! Carbonation looks to be rather subdued and the lacing is most excellent, with virtually an entirely covering ring around the inside of my glass as it settles! This alone will give great marks in the appearance department!

S- This smells sweet right off the bat but in a very good way! There are strong characteristics of cherry Coke, twizzler red licorice, cream soda, and vanilla bean! To help round things out, there are tart Bing Cherry fruits, Belgian yeasty funk, Earthy roots and slight hop bitterness on the finish. Rather nice aromas overall!

T- Tart cherry immediately upfront, which is a sharp contrast to the aromas......along with this sourness that puckered the sides of my mouth immediately, there are sweet balances such as vanilla, simple syrup, again with the Twizzler licorice, cola characters, wild yeast funk and a clean, and slightly bitter hop finish. Tasty on a hot day!

M/O- This is light/medium bodied, with plenty of carbonation, however, it is fine and more Champagne like on the palate. Full flavors that while clean, do linger for a short period of time.....alcohol is very well hidden! Highly drinkable and this was a very nice one off from La Chouffe.....the Gnomes know!

Grabbed a bottle during a recent trip to France. Had never seen this before, and in fact was told it was brand new/just released.

The beer pours a brownish amber color with cherry red hilights. Head retention and lacing are decent, but really not this beer's strong suit. On the nose there is considerable cherry cough drop flavor, with some underlying brown sugar, light chocolate and light spice as well. It's attractive enough, but the cherry cough drop flavor is a bit much. The flavor profile replicates the nose, and again, while attractive, the sweet cherry flavor is a bit over the top. Muothfeel is medium bodied I guess, and the beer finishes pretty well. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and so drinkability is OK.

Shrug. A decent beer for sure, but I was really hoping for a bit of cherry flavor in my L'Chouffe, rather than the other way around. Not sure I need to revisit this any time soon.

Poured from a squat Belgian bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Clear burgundy pour with massive fluffy white head. Outstanding retention and lacing.

S: Cherry cordial. Big time fruit and the suggestion of some tartness.

T/F: Sweet cherry.. fruit... a little cloying. Modestly tart and earthy followed by more sweetness. Some cherry pie flavors... a bit 1 dimensional. Light bodied and sticky. Hides its ABV which is dangerous.

O: A gorgeous looking beer.... smells great, but the flavor for me didn't stack up. Overly sweet. I'd have it again, but there are way better cherry beers out there.

330ml bottle - a bit of a surprise find of late, since we haven't seen anything new from this outfit in a long, long time.

This beer pours a clear, dark magenta colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat bubbly pale pink head, which leaves some decent frilly webbed lace around the glass as it eventually subsides.

It smells of candy-like cherries, grainy and crackery wheat malt, a subtle Belgian yeastiness, some free-range simple syrup, and a bit of musty, leafy, and dead floral noble hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser crackery wheatiness, cherry cough syrup (children's version), icing sugar, ephemeral yeasty notes, and a still rather muted earthy, musty, and floral green hoppiness.

The carbonation is average in its palate-baiting frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and more or less smooth, as all that sugar creates a sort of cushioning effect, as such. It finishes off-dry, the still fairly candied cherry element showing some lingering gumption.

Overall - this is not exactly the train wreck that the greater beer-o-sphere appears all-too-ready to deem it. Definitely more sweet than sour, but it's hardly a one-sided show. Simple, easy to drink, and with literally no sign of the 16-proof wowee sauce measure. Yeah, this is d'Achouffe all right, accident or not.

Pours a deep, dark red with a nice cap of pink foam.

Smell is very similar to cherry Maoam candy, with some maltiness and tartness intertwined.

Taste is pretty much liquid Maoam, fairly sweet, but still pretty refreshing. Malty finish with some hints of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium and soft, slightly undercarbonated.

Overall, a nice, sweet cherry beer. Reminds me of Kasteel Rouge.

This one was a surprise. I did not expect to enjoy the Cherry flavor so much. It often comes chemical but not here. Ok, it was a bit sweet but that suited the whole experience. It came a little late in the evening and I will have to re-review.

Poured to a Chouffe tulip.

A: Body is purple and a bit hazy. Head is pink and with lots of retention and lacing. Looks good.
S: Aroma is very strong of sugary contents, way beyond healthy levels. It's composed mostly of cherries and almost no yeast nor malty tones.
T: Taste is also overwhelming of sugary contents, having a big prominent profile of cherry but that's not very well balanced here. It looks like cheap candy. It's still drinkable but after a few sips it turns a bit hard to drink.
M: Body is medium. Carbonation is perfect. Alcohol is almost unnoticed even with the 8.0% ABV. Bitterness is really low. Sweetness is too high.
O: Not a very interesting Fruit Beer, but had to try it out because of Chouffe's legacy.

Like the looks: dark red amber with a fluffy slightly pink head of foam. Like the smell: a nose full of sour cherries with some yeast, malt and earthy hops, just like a beer like this should smell like. Very mixed feelings about the taste however: lovely sour cherry taste with caramel malt and earthy hops again, but also a lot of chemical sweeteners in the taste, which makes this beer way too sweet and also way too candy-like. Alcohol blends well, despite the quite hefty 8%. Mouth feel is medium bodied and a bit stingy (due to the sweeteners again?). Ditch those sweeteners La Chouffe, and you got quite a nice beer going on here.

Wow..Amazing crafty concoction. Super big cherry fragrance on the pour. Pours a deep, dark red with a nice layer of foam clouds ! Sweet smell for sure right off the bat as well. For a beer that is 8%, it is very well hidden. For a fruit beer, it's well done, smooth and not overly sour.
