12oz bottle from a grocery store near Kailua-Kona.

This beer pours a clear, very dark cola hue, with a fistful of puffy, foamy, and rocky beige head, which leaves some random splotchy lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of baker's chocolate, earthy coffee, semi-sweet caramel malt, and leafy, grassy hops. The taste is sweet nutty caramel malt, a bit of grainy tobacco, soft dry chocolate, some further silky coffee notes, and more mild leafy hops.

The bubbles are nice and morose, the body a sturdy medium weight, and dead smooth; creaminess even makes a few brief house calls. It finishes fairly off-dry, the chocolate, nuttiness, and coffee all blending into one slick sendoff.

A pretty tasty localized porter, the simple nut and coffee flavours making it work against type in this very warm, tropical climate. Good stuff, especially when everything points to the lighter-bodied side of things.

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass.

Dark walnut body, and huge but controlled fluffy and four finger tall head, light tan in appearance. Big retention and staying power too.

Simple notes of light chocolate and light coffee roast. Subtle and inviting not too large, or complicated. Just solid.

Light roast and char. Mellow hints of green leafy mint like hop herbality on the finish. Tea hinting sweet with some porter coffee like warmth. You woulda think those flavor would clash but they balance well. Finishes with a wet mouthfeel but drinks quickly and easily.

Overall pretty interesting with a light leafy angle of sweetness and roast.

Less of a bold flavor compared to other flavors, no specific flavor really stands out, and definitely not one of their better brews

Dark coffee black pour with a 1/2 finger of head.

Lots of coffee bean on the nose, with notes of peppermint milk chocolate and earthy malts.

Flavor is very ashy and earthy, with very faint hints of dark chocolate and fruity coffee. A touch of soy, hints of edamame.

Feel starts off flat and undercarbonated but quickly develops a spikey mouthfeel with a nice, roasty dry earthy finish.

Overall, not my kind of porter, very west coast - lots of ash and earth, with a generous hop presence. It's definitely got the west coast thing down.

Free beer is the best kind, thanks Jon!

Dark pour, almost opaque. Sports some brown head which recedes like it was paid to do so. Aroma is virtually nonexistent.

Hmm, tastes like a porter. No bells & whistles, no depth of flavor, no spikes of interesting additions. Dry, slightly watery, bland. This is the kid in class who is thrilled to pass with a C-

Not worth your money.

I had this brew on a family vacation to Hawaii. From a 12 ounce can, the brew is deep brown with a thin tan head. MtheMthe aroma is roasty, and more malty than most porters. Sweet taste. With lots of roasted nut flavors, medium-full in body and flavorful.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into pint glass, no can dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, dark fruit, light smoke/char, herbal, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Okay aromas with dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty, a touch metallic. Taste of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, and toasted dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, smoke, charcoal, herbal, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a solid American porter. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Nicely rich and well rounded porter malt complexity, with solid earthy hop balance. Aromas were too yeasty, but an enjoyable and well made offering otherwise.

A- pours a very dark brown, not quite black, with a medium depth red to caramel fade on the sides when held up to the light. Initially massive head that dissolves to a ring around the glass and scattered algae like film on top of the liquid.

N- Roasty, chocolate malt, caramel, and some banana and coconut also. No real hop scent to speak of.

T- mostly follows nose, but are there throughout and become more apparent at the finish, there is also the tiniest hint of coffee in there as well. good hot weather dark beer flavor mix there fore in this situation i'm giving it a 0.5 point bump.

M- thin for a Porter, but it is still creamy with a nice dry finish, just a good bit light on the viscosity.

D- Great warm/hot weather porter, or dark beer at all for that matter. thin enough to be a session beer even in the nasty hot days down here, when you usually go for a much lighter beer like an IPA, or a hefe. but even it's lack of viscosity works out well with how the flavors present themselves too, but still all the good dark flavors of a porter, plus the bonus of the local produce taste in there as well. not one I would be too huge a fan of as a porter in a real climate, but works well here, therefore gets a 1.0 point bump.

Another one of the beers reccomended by the guy at The Liquor Collection. I liked this one a bit more than the Hapa Brown. I was thinking that these two were going to be tha same, since they are brewed by the same company though. The smell on this had a chocolate malt beginning, then went to a coffee finish. Taste was somewhat similar, but also had a slight tropical fruit taste with it. Again, this is one I'd like to try on tap. Though it's not the best porter I've had, it is still pretty good.

Pours a murky brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, char, and slight cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and slightly sour fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but there is a slight sourness in the taste that is unexpected for the style.

Pours a dark and black with a nice thick brown head! Smells like chocolate and toffee with a bit of a pepper in the background. Tastes similar to the smell however a bit of coffee comes out in the front. Nice and sweet though. The body is as a porter should be, just thick enough while maintaining a thing profile. This was the last I've tried of all the Mehana beers and this one is there best. If I lived in Hawaii this would be a regular.

A very easy drinking porter. A light, almost transparent porter which is a nice change up from most of the exceptionally dark and heavy ones thst flood the craft market. Gotta show love for my Hawaii breweries.
