Clear, light brown color with a reddish hue. Two thick fingers of creamy tan head that leave nice rings of lacing.

Brown bread malts and yeast in the nose, with a touch of toffee sweetness and overripe plum far behind.

Light tasting up front with a mildly sweet finish that includes some bread, cream, nuts and coffee.

Thicker bodied mouthfeel than expected with a certain creaminess to it.

A light, refreshing, flavorful brown ale.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #59 (December 2011):

LOOK: Towering head, dark brown color

SMELL: German dark bread, toasted chestnuts, carob, yeast, mineral, faint caramel, herbal hop

TASTE: Creamy, medium body, slight roasted grain, dried hay, toasted dark bread, treacle, unsweetened chocolate, dried plums, nutty, yeast, balanced, faint alcohol, dry finish

Brewed in small batches with pure Hawaiian water and their own “proprietary blend of hops.” This one grabbed a silver at the 2010 World Beer Cup. We can see why. “Delicious” comes to mind.

Muddy brown, hazy brew...the head is thick and creamy tan. It has a nutty aroma...a touch of grain and malt, with some american hops. Balanced, and the mouthfeel is firm. Nice.

Got this, because the guy at The Liquor Collection suggested it. He said a few of the other Hawaiian beers they had, weren't anything to get excited about, but this one was decent enough. Once again, the beer from this brewery had an impressive head. Started out with a huge, pillowy head, then died out to a thick lacing. I really liked the smell of this one. Up front, you notice a malty/nutty smell, which is then followed up by a sweet molasses smell. Taste was somewhat similar, but all of the malt, nuts, and molasses tastes ran together, neither really taking charge. There was an off metallic finish in the taste as well. Overall, a decent brew from Hawai'i Nui. I would really like to try this one on draft.

Two fingers' of mocha-brown head exploding with CO2 bubbles before settling into a thick foam. Color was a deep copper with ruby highlights and NE-quality clarity. Nose had a caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium with a brilliant mix of malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Hapa = half. Finish was like a bittersweet caramel, if you can get your head around that one.

Happy National Beer Day...thought I would go local with this selection.

Appearance: Ruby red brown with a thin lace around the rim.

Smell: Mmmmm...so aromatic. Nice robust nutty scent. Almost coffee like in the nose. Some sweetness comes out too....So, so, so good.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Sweet/buttery and mild with just a little bit of hop flavor up front that is soon assaulted by a big malt flavor. Has a roasted quality to it that is very unique...Has a burnt flavor that is very pleasing. The body is very light and gradually builds up with some carbonation. The aftertaste is much in the same vein as the previously noted chalk/roasted nut flavor. Slight bit of sweetness toward the end as well.

Overall: Out of all the Hawai'i Nui beers I've had, this one and the Southern Cross are by far my favorite. Really appreciate the fact that this beer tastes like no other American Brown Ale that I've ever had. Had this both on tap and in bottles throughout Hawaii and it never disappoints. Doesn't get the true respect it deserves...so try it when you get a chance and get in on with the secret. A go to for sure!

12oz bottle, 6.4% ABV, procured at the west side KTA grocery chain on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The label's depiction of surface-skimming dolphins is a nice reminder of a snorkeling trip a few days ago.

This beer pours a clear, dark reddish amber hue, with two fingers of shiny and foamy tan head, which leaves some random streaky upshot lace around the glass as it sinks away, sans fanfare. Not all that brown, but quite attractive in its own right.

It smells of warm toffee, sugary tropical fruit, further dark burnt demerara sugar, a mild nutty butter character, and soft leafy, herbal hops. The taste is lightly toasted caramel/toffee malt, some more lovely buttery nuttiness, a bit of lingering peaty smoke, and leafy, somewhat zingy hops.

The bubbles are sub-par, but only in intensity, and not in overall proficiency, the body a bit light in the medium weight umbrella category, and delicately smooth. It finishes off-dry, and more generically malty, though the sugar and fruit seem to always be at the periphery.

A very enjoyable brown ale, 'island style' as per the label. I take that to refer to the simmering fruitiness that just adds to an otherwise easy-drinking, if not overly complex (ah, who cares, Mr. Hair-splitter!) brown ale.

On-Tap after lunch at the Hilo Burger Joint.

A- Alt/amber color. it reminds me of Alaskan Amber.not a brown ale.

N- Light malts. and some sort of adjunct I can't get too well.

T- Tastes like an amber, floral hops with a nice balancing malt backbone, and a SLIGHT hint of caramel.

M- super thin, even by alt standards.

D- Incredible letdown from this brewery. and I had heard such good things about it. don't think I'll be drinking this one again.

From 22oz. bottle, Pours with a huge, frothy, light brown head with excellent retention. Beer is dark brown.

Nose is nutty, sweet, and malty with some European hops. The flavor is decent, but not as good as the smell. Uses a somewhat darker roast malt than average for style. Has a mild, nutty-earthy-bitter finish.

Medium-light bodied with ample carbonation.

O: ABV seems higher than 6% in this interesting, earthy and rather unrefined brown.

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass.

Deep mahogany brown body color and quite opaque, some chestnut lighter hues on the edges. Head is fluffy and large off pour, a fistfull in size and a near gusher. Thick fluffy retention and light tan colored head. This totally looks like a root beer float, but its head is excessive and borderline ridiculous.

Quite clean and gas like smelling malts. Chocolate malt soda jerk smelling, root beer matching soda like quality without the sweetness. Hints almost crackling pilsner and some milk whoopers candy malted chocolate.

As anticipated way too carbonated. Gaseous and bitter club soda water like finish. Large stinging palate feel that lingers. I get next to no other flavors while drinking this, not even the hints that were on the nose. Mouthfeel hints a bit wet but also doesnt bring much support to help the flavor.

An overly gaseous beer that takes away any resemblance of flavor to style with hardly any hint of chocolate, malt, toast, or nut that I look for. A bit of a dud actually.

Simply referred to as the "Hapa"

Pours a rich dark amber brown, small off white head forms. Aroma of toffee, caramel, slight roasted coffee. In the flavor, rich burnt sugar flavors, a firm and even maltyness, little to no hop intrusion here. Not overly sweet but just shy of a malt bomb. Has a unique roasted/burnt caramel edge and very uplifting. So far the tastiest beer I have come accross on the major island.

A: Red amber color. Poured a 1 finger off-white head that dissipated to a ring aroiund the edge. Decanted lightly. Thin and broken lacing.

S: Caramel and toffee. Roated nuts in the background with a little earth.

T: Very consistent with the nose. Floral hop character comes through the taste that wasn't in the nose. Smokey caramel flavor. Low, even bitter for a nice balance.

M: Light body. Moderate carbonation. Had a thin, sweet-then-dry character in the finish. Seemed like there was a little warming alcohol even though ABV is moderate.

D: Very drinkable. Good flavor. Balance in this brown ale was pleasing.

From capra12. 12oz. bottle into a Heady Topper pint glass.

Pours a gigantic, 5 finger frothy light brown head with crazy retention. Beer is slight cloudy brown mahogany. Lacing is stringy and patchy with moderate cling. Too much head here.

Nose is nutty. Brown sugar, some toffee, hazelnut, and a touch of booziness. Average.

This one is pretty awful. Opens hazelnut. Nice. Some hazelnut, cocoa powder, brown sugar, bitter cinnamon. All decent until a bit wave of booziness hits at the end. At 5.9%, it shows every bit of its alcohol. Ethanol on the finish. Like I'm drinking rubbing alcohol. Lightly nut shell finish.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Warm and smooth in the mouth and aggressive going down. The ethanol doesn't help. Clean finish with a slightly lingering aftertaste.

I'm not sure where the huge ethanol flavor comes from here but it ruins this beer completely. Really not a fan of this one in a style that I usually like.

Pours a clear brown with a 1 inch foamy khaki head that settles to a thin cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt and grains and some nutty aromas. Taste is also of toasty malt and grains with a nutty and roasty finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good brown ale and definitely the best of the Hawaii Nui beers I have tried so far.
