1000th Beer Review!
11.2oz bottle, bottle # 05135, bottled Oct 2017. Served in a Gordon's Finest thistle glass.

Appearance: Clear, but very dark brown beer letting little light through. A tiny thin white ring of foam was present after pouring, and some occasional islands of lacing noted.

Smell: Scotch, with some peaty/smoky notes, caramel, malt, a bit of cinnamon, and some boozy dark fruit aromas.

Taste: Roasted malt with a bit of sourness, along with scotch whiskey, smoke/peat, roasted malt, toffee, and bit of a woody note. Finish is a bit tangy with more whiskey flavor.

Mouthfeel: Good thickness, light carbonation, sticky on the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: A definite slow sipping and savoring beer. This beer is an old ale first, with scotch there to compliment the flavors, not dominate it. A good choice for my 1000th review.

From a cask at the 2018 ACAF (Atlanta Cask Ale Festival). Has an essentially black body that is full and smooth. Peaty and lightly smoky. Complex, barrel-aged aroma.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a thick light brown head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted and biscuit malt, molasses, milk chocolate and a little smoke. Flavor is dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, oak, peat, then develops a mild tartness that is odd for this style before settling into a nice moderately rich dark chocolatey malt with peaty scotch notes. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess and nice mouth feel. Although an old ale the malt leans a bit towards a full bodied stout. The flavor is a bit of a roller coaster, starting with full malty old ale character with nice chocolate, but developing a slightly astringent tartness in the middle, which could be from the scotch barrels. The aftertaste returns to malt and nice scotch smokiness. I like this overall, but the light tartness in the middle was a little off-putting for me.

amazing glass of beer here, for some reason i didnt expect it to be so dark, old ale usually isnt. i should have known better with these guys though. its a special edition, aged in wonderful single malt scotch barrels, quite a bit more peaty and earthy and barrel forward than some of the other variants i have had of this. i see these ola dubh beers on the shelves all the time and overlook them, i shouldnt let it be so easy to forget how good these are! this one has a lot of scotch on the nose, past the roasted barley and wet musty autumnal vibes i get sturdy smoke, dense peat, and warming mature liquor. plenty of oak here, a little char and a little coal too, minerals and compost, slippery wet wood, dusty european malts, extinguished cigar, and scotch. its boozy but not absurd, full bodied but not heavy, insanely dry for what it is too, uncommonly so, and with more carbonation than we usually see in something like this. old worldy and sort of timeless to me, something very special indeed, and for a rather intimidating beer on paper, its overall very inviting and drinkable. every sip was a new adventure, i love the scotch profile, a total delight and delicacy!

Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma is woody with dried fruit notes and damp cellar. Taste is astringent, woody, dried fruit forward with fig notes and slightly bitter finish. Medium minus body and carbonation. Dried fruit forward with light whiskey tartness.

A 330ml foiled and capped bottle, bottle no. 09925, bottled in October 2017, and best before end of February 2021. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: A clear dark brown colour with pretty much no head and only very sparse spotted lacing.

Aroma: Chocolate, whisky, raisin, fig, wood, caramel, with light peat and smoke.

Taste: Watery, whisky, roasted malts, chocolate, raisin, caramel, fig, dried fruit, with light roast and smoke.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: My first impression was that the body was so light that it drank like watered down whisky. It was better after it warmed as the complexity and roastiness came out and balanced the wateriness to the point that it was ok and drinkable. I easily preferred the Special Reserve 21 version though, but I am looking forward to trying the other varieties. A heavier body would have improved this.

Poured from 11.2oz bottle into glass. Bottle No. & Date '01482 OCT 2017'.
Dense black colored body. Bubbly, tan colored head disappears and allows rising bubbles to break the surface. No lacing.
Aroma expresses a lot of the oak barrel with the peaty Scotch. Slight smoke. Behind is molasses and chocolate.
Taste is the smoky, peaty Scotch combining with the dark roasted malts. Lots of chocolate and molasses. In the middle is a tartness which does not participate in the aftertaste.
Rather thin mouth feel, but does has a slickness to it. Good carbonation.
The aftertaste lies heavy with the oak whiskey barrel and its attendant smoky peat. Rather mellow and smooth overall.

Age an excellent porter for 2 years in barrels that formerly contained 12 year Highland Park Scotch Whiskey, and you get an oaky, smooth and nuanced porter that is a delight to savor. Superb!

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle dated 2017 into the test glass
A - Beautiful bakers chocolate color, hides any sign of what lurks, Steady carbonation assembles topside. A thin mocha cap is quick to exit.
S - Excellent notes form the barrel treatment, vanilla, shade tobacco hanging to dry, coffee notes, cocoa powder, peat and a touch of smoke.
T - Ripe blackberry wrapped in peat, aged on vanilla beans, 70% cocao, sweet dark malts.
M - Thin, this is the only aspect that feels off, Lite in body, sweet start then a quick wave moves through, drying the palate. Linger in tilted toward the barrel treatment, very nice element of the offering
O - A very good offering, complex nose and flavor threads. The palate is the weakest part, but not enough to take away from enjoying this lovely offering

L- Pours with 3mm dark tan head fast clearing. Perhaps the darkest beer I recall having, effectively black with just a tiny hint of ruby red in the base/corner when held up close right in front of a halogen reading light. Head now reduced to a ring and some surface patches, and later lacing.
S- Unmistakable prominent whisky aroma. Then a deep woody scent. Smokey and toasty.
T- A deep porter. Peaty, smokey and toasty, with whisky notes then coming up. After swirling it around the mouth, smacking the tongue/mouth about after swallowing really brings out the taste. Some coffee, even glimpses of a glass of cola.
M- For an 8% it comes over as quite strongly flavoured but quite light in body, if feels more like a 5.5-6% to me. Carbonation in the glass and mouth is relatively low/arguably lacking.
O- If you like porters and whisky, have money, and enjoy something different this might be just your thing! As it warms somewhat the whisky's prominence rises and you need to enjoy that facet to pay this much.

Bottle #00618.Bottled in Oct.2017.Pours nearly pitch black into a snifter with a full finger mocha colored head atop.Caramel and English treacle in the nose,I don't get alot of peat but there is a slight smoky element as it warms a bit.Wow the complexities on the palate are never ending,caramel,toast,nuts,smoky peat,even a faint tartness in the finish.Not over the top in alcohol it's a nice sipper,wow there is alot of different things goin on here...Even more so as it warms,make sure to sip and savor.Well done.

11.2 ounce bottle, bottled OCT 2017, bottle #04673. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention is decent, and there's a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like peat, roasted malt, molasses, coffee and earthiness. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some vanilla, caramel, Worcestershire sauce and oak noticeable too. The peat is stronger in the taste compared to the aroma. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit creamy and coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good sweet and peaty brew, definitely recommend this one if you're into smoke/peaty beers like I am! $14.49 a bottle.
