Poured from bottle into teku

Pour - Thicker than your average stout. Not as thick as the Toppling Goliath which I guess I was expecting based on others feedback on the pour and mouthfeel. One finger tan head which dissipates with a bit of time. Grows legs with each sip most of which make their way back down , but others seem to linger on the side of the glass for some time.

Smell - Cracking the bottle got a fair bit of vanilla directly. After the pour that seemed to die down a bit. Still there but reduced. Almost a bacon like scent to it in the glass which dominates a bit over chocolate/fudge. Bourbon hits you pretty well too with a bit of oak.

Taste - Chocolate, fudge, and bourbon. Vanilla is there, but more subtle than I expected. Bit of woodiness/oak in there as well.

Mouthfeel - Based on the feedback from folks who had both blends at the release, I was expecting it to be a lot thicker. It's thicker than most stouts for sure, but not as thick as Toppling Goliath's which is what I was expecting. I'd say it is similar to BC Rare or Bourbon Edition Vanilla shake in terms of consistency.

Overall - Great top tier stout which I'd put up there with most of the big boys. Like the chocolate with vanilla undertone. Reminds me of BC Rare (granted it's been awhile since I had one) in terms of flavor profile. As mentioned above I was hoping for a lot more in terms of mouthfeel. Not getting the "syrup" or "chew" that others mentioned. Definitely thicker than most stouts, but was wishing it'd be even more viscous. You know looking for something that really makes you chew on it and mull it over. For 15% ABV it drinks crazy smooth. Nice job by Side Project on this one.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Inky black with a medium mocha head. Thin collar. Huge amounts of vanilla. Fudgy dark chocolate. Lightly smokey and strong roasted malt. Taste has a huge amount of vanilla also. Heavy chocolate fudgy sweetness, Light smokiness that really just blends into a bitter roasted malt flavor. Boozy. Extremely heavy. Low carbonation. Extremely good, but extremely sweet and boozy.

Not as thick as blend one but much better IMHO. Not as sweet as Blend 1 so a little more drinkable but there was this bitterness to it that was slightly off putting. Also overrated but not as bad as Blend 1.

Poured from the bottle a deep oil black with a thin dark mocha head. No lacing left behind.

Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, and bourbon.

Tasted of vanilla, chocolate, fudge, roasted malts with a definite palate warming from the 15% abv.

Full bodied and smooth with a light carbonation.

Bottle split at the cellar.

Nose is vanilla and hq booziness
Taste follows with some nice cinnamonny spiciness and dark fruit coming into play. Vanilla lingers a good long time...
...And I'm back. The mouthfeel is THICK. Still some carb though. Much more cars than d4. Like it better than d4 mainly for that reason.
Need to wrap this glass up so I can get on the ba abraxas glass sitting next to it!
Cheers!

Oh my word. On tap at the cellar and I want more. The vanilla helps balance out the smokiness and I love it even more than #1!

Had the entire set from Derivation 1 to 6 plus Double Barrel at the Tasting to Sink all Sea Shepherds at St-Gilles Moeder Lambic cellar. Thanks Anton for this one and thanks Cory for letting this full horizontal become reality.
A: Pours exactly the same as the other Derivations, that is to say pitch black with some dark lacings on top.
S: Smell of vanilla, marshmallow and marzipan. Exceptional balance, amazing vanilla bomb. The most balance vanilla stout I've ever had. I love it very much!
T: This beer is a vanilla bomb in the taste also. Very deep and balanced with the same mix of flavors as perceived from the nose: vanilla, marzipan, chocolate, etc. Awesome.
M: Smooth and chewy, less sticky than the other Derivations, which makes this actually more slayable! The sweetness isn't cloying at all there, it just enhances the multiples layers of flavors this beer has into it. Alcohol is not detectable.
O: I dare to say it's the best vanilla beer I've had so far, even better than Brandy Vanilla Dark Lord, 2010 Vanilla Vourbon County or yellow wax Assassin. Superb beer!

side project is really setting the standard right now. some of the best beers in the country are being done by these guys across an impressive range of styles. i loved this beer, top to bottom. tons of fresh vanilla bean aroma and flavor, goes amazing with the wheated whiskey (i have long thought weller to be better whiskey than many of its more expensive counterparts), and a real cool base beer with a ton of black booze depth. i love how forward the vanilla is without it being too sweet, thats the usual pitfall in beers like this, especially this strong. the wheat in the base beer is not irrelevant, hardly lost to the dark malts, instead propping them up, bringing out more of their nuance, and providing enough body for all this flavor to cling to. its really boozy, definitely a slow sipper, the alcohol is fusel and hot here, and the oak doesnt mellow it out quite as well as i expected it to, but this is 15% abv, pretty gnarly. in the end though, this is one of the better whiskey barrel and vanilla bean concoctions i have ever had, and although i dont like this quite as much as the blend 1 (maple syrup barrels), it stands as one of the best examples of this style that exists today. very lucky to have been able to drink a number of these special side project beers recently in the same session. this is enormous beer and enormously flavorful, obviously buy it if you can find it for sale.
