Kriek Du Fermier is our delicate and aromatic Saison du Fermier aged with cherries in French Oak wine barrels. The brightness, depth and rustic character are created by the wild yeast native to our family's Missouri farm. This Cherry Saison was fermented in and aged in wine barrels for over a year before being naturally conditioned in this bottle.
For those of you close to Side Project, you know that Kriek du Fermier has been in the works for several years now, but I can say that the wait was worth it. For the first Blend and release of KdF, we were fortunate enough to be allowed to use the Danish cherries from Frederiksdal. I first tasted the Frederiksdal Cherry Wines at the Mikkeller Copenhagen Beer Celebration in 2015. Their Cherry Wines were unlike anything I had had before and were distinctive in their cherry acidity, flavor and aroma. When we were given the opportunity to use these cherries, I was excited to put them in our favorite base for fruit, Saison du Fermier.

Pours a cloudy ruby red with thin white head. Aroma of berries, grapes and cherry. Not overly tart or sour. Nice natural cherry and jammy berry flavor. Excellent.

Pours a raspberry red with a light fog to the transparency. The final ounces turn the transparency more towards murky. Head is a finger and a half of pink white foam.
Aroma is cherries right on the nose. Cellar stone, lemon zest, oak, grass, and faint grain form the rest of the nose. The whole aroma has a light sour funk to it, but it's not over powering, nor is it the focal point.
Flavor profile is cherries through and through. At the onset, the cherries are more sweet, especially if served around fridge temperature (~42F). As it warms up, the back half of the flavor profile becomes more and more tart and funky cherry. Nearing room temperature, and the duration of cherries is all light sour funk. Cellar stone, bread, earthy malts, and faint grass form the rest of the flavor profile, and ebb and flow in varying temperatures.
Mouth feel carries a light, mouth coating silt throughout the entire profile. Effervescence is moderately sharp at the start, but bubbles down to a soft finish. Thickness is medium.
Overall, cherries add a wonderful level of depths here, which just enhances the whole experience. It's not singular in focus on either sweetness of funkiness, which adds to the intrigue as well. Base Fermier is steadfast in its funky saison intention, with the cherries maintaining this same focus, while adding an additional level of depth.
Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 750mL bottle. Blend #2.

750 mL bottle. Deep red. Smells of red wine, sour cherry, oak. Tastes of strong oak, earthy yeast, sour cherry, deep red wine sourness. Pretty sour, but not quite too much. Red wine is very strong. I didn't expect much from it, but it's not bad.

Pouted from a 750 mL bottle. The color is very pretty red hazy color. The aroma is a bit of funk with a big explosion of cherry, love it. The taste follows the smell with the typical SP acidity and a big cherry flavor. Its an awesome beer and tasty nonetheless.

Batch 2 (2020) from bottle. This pours a beautiful cherry red color, with foam which dissipates quickly. Lots and lots of cherries popping at you in aroma and in initial flavor. A puckering brew for sure. There are those balanced krieks, and then there's this which feels extreme and unhinged. Better like tartness and be prepared for acidity. In a nutshell, I really like it.
