What happens when a hyped brewery produces the world's most hyped style? This, apparently. Side Project makes some awesome beer. I thoroughly have enjoyed what I've had from them. However, I see so many breweries around the country attempting New England style hoppy ales and few have come close to matching the big players. I'm not trying to discourage Side Project from making more of this, since it is a first go and this is an experimental and learning experience. If people want to go crazy for it, by all means. I think that Cory and friends are still finding their legs for this type of brew. Given Cory's resume and commitment to excellence, I'd be surprised if they don't find the magic sooner rather than later. This first round has an acrid hop character though. The primary characteristics are earthy. While it has the haze that people erroneously go nuts for, it misses the target as far as the flavor that has compelled Brewers across the country to mimic this style. It's a west coast IPA with a New England body, made in middle America.

A - Pours a hazy soft yellow orange with a 1/2" head.
S - Aroma is pineapple and lemon citrus.
T - A lot of citrus flavor with some malt on the finish. No bitterness to speak of.
M - Medium mouth feel and carbonation.
T - I'm not a big Pale ale fan, I find I prefer IPA's & DIPA's. But the better Pale's rise to the challenge, and this is a good one. I with I got a couple more cans. Look forward to more of this from Side Project.

16 oz tall boy
$?
Pours a cloudy pale gold with very minimal head.
Nose is malty with muted citrus - lemon and orange.
Taste is citrus - lemon, malt, and resin.
Mouthful is medium and a bit aggressive. Carbonation is above average. Finish is dry.
A decent drinkable pale ale. Nothing remarkable but still palatable. Better examples out there but still worth a try.
