Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Derivation Blend #10 shares the same recipe as Blend #5, it is an Imperial Oatmeal Stout that started as a recipe that I created almost 7 years ago. Of all of our stout recipes, I have brewed more of this one than any other!

After fermenting in stainless with an American yeast strain, this recipe (we call it “Oats/D5" on the recipe sheets) was racked to freshly dumped Rum Barrels and aged for 14 months before we moved it to our brite tank to be finished on a new coffee, a Kaldi’s El Manzano Honey Processed Coffee from El Salvador, and also copious amounts of Madagascar Vanilla Beans. We bottled it in July and allowed it to condition for those 3 months before we determined it ready to be shared. The result is a barrel-aged stout that represents what we believe a Rum Barrel-Aged Derivation should be!

Being in the vast minority of craft beer aficionados who does not like the taste of bourbon, I was excited to try the Rum Barrel Aged Derivation #10. It didn't disappoint. Maybe the perfect beer, and probably my favorite variant yet.

Pours black with no head. Aroma is dark chocolate, cocoa, molasses and toffee. Very sweet, but not cloyingly sweet. Roasty, toasty malts around it out. Flavor profile is roasty, toasty malts with dark chocolate, cocoa, toffee, and barrel. Mouth feel is medium-thick, with a velvety texture. Overall, big pastry notes and a nice underlying stout.

Served from a 750mL bottle at the Side Project Cellar.

this is really absurd beer, one of their best really, of any style, so glad i got to drink on this one. rum barrel aged with gobs of vanilla and high end coffee, but what stands out to me is a chocolate profile in this, and the overall insane quality of the base beer, among the very best in the game. i get an almost fudge complexion overall, or a brownie batter or something, desserty with a lot of sweetness from the rum coming through of course, but enough starch from the oats, dry cereal body, and roasty malt layering to make it feel rich but also balanced, crazy depth of flavor here, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, subtle anise and spice in the rum, wet oak and light char, vanilla to high heaven but really natural, and enough bitterness from the coffee and dark grain to not be too sweet or decadent, despite its enormous size. it has the texture of a milkshake, and the whole palate coats with chocolate for me, surprised to learn there is no cocoa in here, its all from the grain, impressive! caramel and molasses in here, incredibly forward and pungent vanilla, but not too much of it, subtle smoke and dark raw cocoa, expected bit of booze for how strong this is, lots of oak, the rum itself isnt crazy flavorful, but it highlights the right elements of this, namely the vanilla, oak, and nuances of the dark grain. really impossibly good beer, maybe my favorite derivation i have had so far, and worth every bit of the hype. as much as i havent loved the direction of their sours lately, this keeps side project squarely at the top of the heap. epic stout, as good as it gets, no matter what you like in this style, this was thrilling!

Rum hits strong and comes off as sun tan lotion-esque. Overpowers the coffee and vanilla. The coffee has somewhat of a subdued stale flavor. Medium thick mouthfeel, thinner than the last few iterations with some sharp roastiness. Still an outstanding beer, but falls way short of the hype and prestige. I'm not sure this is really worthy of being a Derivation.

Bottle pour at zwanze day. More carb apparent than most derivations, nose is coffee dominant. Taste astringent (think hour-old very good African coffee), very little sweetness. I love the moderate carb level and thickness. I hear there’s a lot of bottle variation

New most to least favorite derivations list: 2, 8, 6, 1, 9, 5, 7, dB, 3 (wish I could taste this one again), 10, 4, Apple brandy. Cheers!

Pour is pitch black, no head noted. Getting strong notes of molasses, burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, and huge coffee. Taste I'm getting some coconut, sweet rum, coffee is huge, vanilla icing, chocolate. Thick viscous mouthfeel, although thinner than other SP stouts. Overall, fantastic.
