Collaboration with Evil Twin Brewing
English Barleywine aged in a blend of Rittenhouse Rye and Maple Bourbon barrels for 19 months.
Maltvin 2023 was aged in a combination of Willett bourbon and Willett rye barrels for 19 months before selecting a blend that exemplified notes of toffee, vanilla, nougat and soft caramels. It was then conditioned for several months in the bottle before release.

On-site at Side Project, served into a goblet glass.
Dark brown body, nearly black, pours like a stout, really. One finger offwhite head, fair retention, no lacing.
Smell is a bit mindblowing. Maple bourbon, rye, milk chocolate and fudge. It wasn't what I was expecting. The barrel character is incredibly strong here without adding any sort of boozy heat. A touch of char, maybe. It's fairly sweet, but in a fashion that isn't quite toffee or caramel-forward; it's not really manifesting as much of the classic English Barleywine profile on the nose, and even less so on the palate. A fair bit of a confusing beer, but if you think of it like a stout and less of a classic EBW, it all makes sense. Perhaps the heavy barrel-aging tempered out the typical sweetness of Evil Twin's influence. Either way, the barrels really all comes together well here.
Full bodied, good carbonation, fairly chewy with a nice bourbon-soaked milk chocolate candy bar with maple glaze on the finish. Smooth and appropriately smooth, without being anywhere close to being diabetic. Pretty good beer, one that defies categorical expectations and I think that's mostly because of the maple. It isn't a classical EBW like Anabasis was, but neither is it anything like an Even More Jesus or something similar from Evil Twin.

Black with a murky complexion. There's a trace of brown around half of the rim. The aroma is of bourbon and rye. I'm tasting bourbon and loads of dark malty sweetness. The mouth seems thick, but surprisingly viscous considering the ABV.

This one pours looking like a straight up stout, with a pretty dark black color, with a small head, and no lacing.
This smells like sugary maple candy, caramel fudge, dusty cocoa powder, toffee, bourbon, and oak.
This is massively sweet, but it's still a pretty well done barleywine. It's massive and sticky - with lots of maple, but not much bourbon or oak to tamper the sweetness. This is also quite chocolatey for a barleywine, with not enough caramel or toffee.
This is thick, syrupy, and lightly carbed, with not a ton of easy drinkability. It's easily a slow sipper.
I expected quite a bit more out of this one. It's just way too sweet and syrupy, unfortunately.
