Batch 2
Red mixed culture sour ale aged in Pinot Noir barrels and refermented w/ raspberries. Shady Grove bursts with a fresh raspberry and red wine aroma. The body features pleasant acidity and a light mouthfeel that encourages repeat sippin'.
Batch 1
Sour red aged for five months in red wine barrels, then a month on strawberries, then another six weeks in the bottle with Brett C.

A one-inch beige head builds before quickly dropping and leaving no lacing. Rapid columns of small carbonation rise within an almost clear (SRM 13-14) copper beer.
Sourness is bracingly strong, overwhelming aromas of cherry and leather. After this initial assault, one notices strawberries and Starburst candy. Warmth brings out an unfortunate soapy aroma.
The flavor is acidic and sour, though both are considerably less than the aroma had suggested. Non-distinct, fruity flavors abound with possible standouts of oak and cherries. A building astringency consumes the finish. Warmth aids the astringency in displacing sourness and fruity flavors.
The body is medium with a nylon texture and fair carbonation. Light metallic notes accompany alcohol as expected.
This style is difficult to master. While Shady Grove falls short, it is a good effort, worthy of refinement. I enjoyed this bottle under a newly roofed deck on a warm, quiet, Fourth of July afternoon.

Note: Batch 2
A: Pours a relatively clear medium to dark purplish ruby red in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate garnet red + golden honey colored highlights. The beer has a finger tall fizzy foamy pinkish white head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of tart raspberries with lighter aromas of vinous red wine and oak barrels.
T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of tart raspberries with some light flavors of oak. That is followed by light flavors of vinous red wine and hints of funky sourness. Moderate amounts of lingering tartness.
M: Light to medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Slightly heavier than moderate amounts of acidic prickliness.
O: Easy to drink with the lighter body and acidity as well as the well hidden alcohol. Really nice flavors from the raspberries and just enough tartness. Very enjoyable, I would be happy to have another of these.
