Helm's DeepHelm's Deep
Notes: Long hidden in the deep shadows of eight-year-old bourbon barrels, this full-bodied imperial stout emerges thick as the blackest night. An intense dark malt complexity with notes of chocolate and vanilla leads to a labyrinth of flavors saturated with bourbon and oak.

Pours heavy with lazy carbonation. Smell is pretty neutral; you have to struggle to find it. No barrel; just a chocolate sweetness. The flavor follows. Initially it's quite delicious but it doesn't open up into anything more - just sweet and chocolatey. There's no nuance, no barrel. Body is heavy but lacking either liveliness on one end or a coating thickness on the other.

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great a nice dark black with no head but with excellent legs. Like tree sap.

S - Aromas of chocolate, oats light vanilla. No real alcohol on the nose, sweet, nice roast malts.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with sweet almost raisin notes, good chocolate notes, sweet oak, good light barrel. Rather sweet though.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, body is a bit thin.

O - Overall this was a very solid stout though a bit on the sweet side. Alcohol hidden very nicely.

This may be one of the tastiest beverages I have ever consumed. I judge this from a pour of Helm's Deep at Three Taverns while picking up a 750ml bottle of the same. The aroma is nearly perfect as is the taste. It looks lovely, dark, and deep. Yes, it is.

I had Helm's Deep as my second beer of the day at Wrecking Bar Strong Beer Fest. I had Creature Comforts Existence right after, and while it was still a good beer, I was still thinking about how great Helm's Deep was. Looking at the line out the door for Existence pours, I stood at the next station and had Helm's Deep two more times without anyone else in line. Existence was being poured from bottles, but having had it at the Anniversary earlier this year, I can honestly say (in just MY opinion) Helm's Deep is a much better beer. Incredible flavor, balance, chewy, not overly sweet - might be the best barrel-aged beer I have had from Georgia.
