Hand signed and numbered (938) 22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 14.99. No bottling date but this was just released this week (October 2014). Served in a Barrel and Barley teku.

Pours a hazy, opaque, orange brown with only some sparce clumps of large bubbles around the edge. The bubbles settle to a tight halo without depositing any lace.

Aromas of sweet fruit, slightly reminiscent of plums and pear, with sugar and vague toasted grains. It really opens up nicely as it warms.

Flavors are rich, sweet and malty. Raisins, caramel, toffee, leather, earth, fruit peel/skins, cereal malts, toast and a subtle nip of booze. Drinks much smoother than the alcohol bill might imply. There are flavors going on that I can pin down but ultimately this is delicious.

Full, creamy body with almost no carbonation. It is still not lifeless and dances softly on the tongue. Finishes with dark fruit, semi-burnt caramel and malty sweet grains.

Jekyll has done some nice work in the past year or so that they've been open but they have knocked one out of the park with Off The Grid. While I'd love to see what some aging on spirits could do here, I can't think of a non barrel aged English barleywine that I think is better than this. I highly recommend trying this and hope to acquire more.

The color was deep ruby, and the carbonation was very limited, with almost no head formation. The aroma was very malty, reeking of red apple, ripe cherries, and some banana. The taste was sweet, with brown sugar, dates, cherries, and apple being featured. The body was very still, and beer felt a little thin in the mouth. I know this is a barleywine, but it felt more similar to a Belgian Quadrupel to me.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, mahogany-hued body with two full fingers worth of yellowy beige foam. Nice-lookin' legs, too.

Smell: A deep, rich toasted maltiness, thick with sweetish brown sugar and caramel topping. Estery fruitiness, though put me down for some traces of banana, to my surprise. Alcohol noted.

Taste: Toasted breadcrusts, gooey caramel and light brown sugar with a round though controlled sweetness to it. Figs, cherries, scant banana and a hint of orangey citrus. Moderately bitter. Fairly warming brew. Lightly earthy. Bittersweet, warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Solid enough. I will also take this time to lament barleywines being so few and far between.

look: Clear copper. Sparse off white head. No lacing.
smell: Toffee and brown sugar. Not mega rich like some monster barleys but it's rich.
taste: Ditto for the taste. Toffee, hints of dark fruit. Needle is moved to Rich w/o quite breaking through to stellar status. Solid English.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A - Pours a mostly clear, deep brownish amber color with a finger of foamy tan head that slowly fizzles away leaving sparse lacing around the edge of the glass.

S - Sugary sweet up front, fruity esters, faint tartness, toffee, brown sugar, alcohol, traces of cola.

T - Mid level bittering hops give this much more balance than I expected from the aroma. Mildly metallic, still getting hints of cola and maybe root beer, brown sugar and toffee, raisins, alcohol, mild vanilla, fruity esters.

M - Medium bodied, mid-level carbonation that is a bit on the high side for the style, overall sweet but enough hops to keep this in check - still brown sugar, caramel and toffee character is dominant. Finishes with some root beer character, earthy hops and mild alcohol.

O - Good English style barleywine overall. One of those that doesn't really stand out as remarkable, but is solid all around. Flaws are more of a preference thing...carbonation is a bit high. High on esters, maybe lacking in complex variety of sugar in the profile. Doesn't quite match up with the best, but worth a try.

Bottle 1096 - Almost 11 months old

Appearance: Hazy chestnut brown, great lasting cap and lacing.

Aroma: Pralines - and other assorted sugary nutty treats.

Flavor: Medium+ sweetness bordering but not quite to the cloying stage. Touch of booze.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, pretty sticky, same touch of booze.

Sugary candy, molasses, raisins, brown sugar, toffee, red apple, fruity, banana esthers. Very nice nose met with an underwhelming, way-too-thin mouthfeel, although I suspect it feels thin due to lack of carbonation. Virtually no head and hardly any carbonation, which is usually a good thing for this style. Alcohol is hidden well. Overlooking the thin mouthfeel, this is a very nicely done English barleywine. I'm just left wondering why a beer that's made barely 20 miles from where I bought it cost $15.99 for a bomber. This brew is just begging for a properly done bourbon barrel aged release.

650ml bottle. Poured into a snifter 11/20/2014.

A- Dark toffee-brown, with reddish hues; half finger white head with fair retention time, no lacing. [3.5]

S- Smells of sweet toffee, caramel, brown sugar, hint of banana presumably from the yeast. It's got a fairly sweet malt background with a bit of earthy hop aromas. Quite sweet, however. [4]

F- Toffee, caramel, molasses, raisins. Very sweet. Candied sugar. Again, very sweet. Hint of banana. Nice bitter earthiness on the backend that rivals some of the more bitter IPAs I've had. This is hopped up in a more generic, less citrusy bitter manner than its American counterparts. [3.5]

M- Medium bodied, smooth and low in carbonation. A bit sticky and boozy; on the thinner side of the spectrum. [3.5]

O- Decent English barleywine, nothing to write home about. It has a very sweet presence with a surprisingly bitter (but not citrusy in the American sense) finish. [3.5]

Good caramel and toffee, could use chocolate and thickness.
