Very Good
Hop Dang Diggity Southern IPAHop Dang Diggity Southern IPA
Notes: Our IPA was brewed to remind us of the aroma of those tall Georgia pines, while the malty backbone balances everything out. Hopped up like a one-legged chicken, this ain’t your standard IPA, Darlin.

Poured from bottle into an IPA glass

What is a 'Southern IPA'?
This is more East Coast than West, for IPA style. Fine copper color, white head, some lacing. Subdued aroma, piney hops and bready malts, no tropical notes. Taste is bitter piney hops and malt background. Medium mouth feel. An okay IPA, but not distinctive.

Jekyll Brewing "Hop Dang Diggity"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating

Hop Dang Diggity is a fairly straightforward golden malt/biscuity and citrus hop IPA. It's medium bodied with a moderately crisp carbonation; and the appearance is really quite nice with solid rings of lace left behind on the glass. Pineapple, pine, and peach/apricot/tangerine liven it while the malt base remains solid, unlike so many examples that seem a touch watery with the malt simply acting as a base for the hops rather than a component to be seriously recognized. A solid bitterness acts as its center while the malt and hops combine in a tight ball around it. It finished dry but lively, with bitterness, malt, and fruity hop flavors dancing to a happy song as they make their way along a dirt road beneath oaktrees as the sun sets. Pleasant. Polished. Drinkable.

Good looking brew, copper-bronze coloring, clear, with a fluffy white head but little lacing. Pretty clear concentration on balance in the smell and flavor, as piney bitterness and earthy malt are the dominant smells and tasting notes. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot more going on: not a lot of depth, almost no citrus or fruit, and dare I say too much malt influence for an American IPA. I've seen references by other reviewers to "Southern IPAs," but I don't know what that really means. If this is a proper representation of a Southern IPA, then I'm not sure I'm all that interested.

Great nose on this very hoppy, slightly bitter American ale

Golden body topped by generous white head & great lace. Citrus, pine and grainy malt aromas and taste. Well carbonated and balanced IPA.

Bottle, no date. Have also had on tap, with similar impressions.

This is a big IPA that skirts the IPA/DIPA border in terms of body and malt presence, but the overall effect from aroma to finish emphasizes the hops. I was not able to find any info about what hops are used, but they come through nicely and are piney and vegetal. C hops, most likely. This is a very good IPA that surpasses most other commercially available Georgia IPAs. Well worth a try.

The pour had a classic IPA look, with a peach colored clear body, two finger thick foamy head with lots of staying power, and gentle streams of natural carbonation streamers. The beer had a strong hop aroma, as I did no even need to bring the glass to my nose to start to smell it. The hops were typical citric type, with grapefruit, mandarin orange, and cut hay being the predominant smells. The taste wasn't quite as complex as I had thought it was going to be. It was plenty hoppy, but with not much malt backing it up. The result was a bitter and spicy, "California style" hop bomb. Lucky for them, I actually really like the one dimensional assault. I think the freshness of this hometown brew really shines through, as the hops are really green and herbalicious, which is word this beer made me invent. Quite a light mouthfeel, with tingly bubbling of bursting carbonation dancing on my tongue. This is the perfect first sample from a brewery less than two miles from my house. I think I am going to go on tour of their facility just to get this at the source.

16 ounce pint - Mellow Mushroom in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Appearance: Coppery body with a tinge of orange to the hue. Modestly hazed. Slim, white head.

Smell: Slim, scant maltiness offers few aromatics, with the bulk of the nose being made up of subtly pithy, resiny hops.

Taste: Starts with a dry pale maltiness, a little crackery accent. Very little incorporated sweetness. Lightly floral, citrusy, steely hops with a restrained pine resin element. Moderate bitterness. There's no late-breaking sweetness, leaving the beer to finish as dry as it began with its bitterness carrying over into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Falls on the lighter end of medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Found it a bit mediocre, a little bit drier than preferred, but by no means bad.

It is so nice to finally be able to pick up tasty IPAs from the shelf here in Atlanta without having to trade for them. This brew is fantastic. Cheers to Jekyll.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass. The appearance is a golden yellow with a large white head. The aroma is all hops. The taste is a crisp piney hop bliss. Overall, an excellent beer.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is hazy dark golden with a small off-white head.

S: Floral hops and tropical fruity hops over bready malt.

T: Bready malt foundation, then some tropical fruity hops (mango, pineapple). Then modest bitterness at the finish. Something not quite "right" in the finish, though it's hard to pin it down. A little too sweet in the aftertaste is part of it, I think.

M: Medium in heft, slightly slick in feel.

O: Meh. Not really impressed with this one.
