Look: It pours dark brown with a creamy, brown head that produces good lacing.
Smell: IT has coffee, roasted malt, rye, and some alcohol aromas.
Taste: It has flavors that feature roasted malts and rye with coffee, floral, grass, and coffee hints.
Feel: It has a highly bitter finish with some alcohol warming.
Overall: This beer features the roasted malts and rye but produces several other background flavors that add to the complexity and enjoyment of this ale.

22oz bomber, sample from the brewery.
Very healthy looking head, stay a while. Black it is, as dark as it can be. Blood orange, chicory, spicy rye, toasted bread, roasted coffee and resin hop in the nose and the palate. Deep smoothness, full bodied though still very easy to sip. A whole lot of fun going on in this beer.

The beer poured an opaque black with a deep coffee colored head that stuck around for a while.
The nose was inviting. Intense dark chocolate. Slightly burnt toast. Buttery caramel. Maybe a little Cà Phê Sữa đá (Vietnamese ice coffee with condensed milk). Hints of floral spices and Christmas tree.
Bold hops and deep roasted malt battle it out in every sip. Both sides win as the flavor is big and satisfying.
The mouthfeel ties it all together for me. Lots of carbonation rivals the relatively thick body. I'd call this one a sipper, but the savory flavor made me want to inhale it.
Falls somewhere between Firestone Wookey Jack and fellow VA brew, O'Connor's Great Dismal. A pretty high compliment (in case you're wondering). Worth a trip to the gem of a town, Staunton, to try Redbeard's ten or so beers and bring home a growler of this Black Rye IPA.
