A complex, layered hop mixture makes this a well rounded IPA with strong grapefruit and pine flavors with a hint of pepper. This beer has great head retention and strong hop aroma.

Label stamped 0311. 12 oz bottle poured into a dumb clear plastic cup. (sue me)

Appearance - Off-white head with stick. Low retention. Clear filtered apple juice amber body.

Smell - Maltiness up front with some low to moderate hop behind it. Apple. Very mild.

Taste - Moderate hop body. Almost like an ESB. Especially with the light sweetness in the finish. Tea. Honey. Not what I want from an IPA.

Mouthfeel - Watery. Flat. Not good at all.

Overall Drinkability - This should be an ESB. Not digging it as a beer called an IPA.

Stuck in ABQ airport and the Sierra Blanca lineup is all that is offered in the only restaraunt inside the terminal, not even BMC.

The color looks pretty good, decent head dark yellow. Smell is actual nice, some grapefruit, pine, citrus, hops. Taste is just meh. Somewhat crisp but no depth, very light almost like one of Lawson's Finest 3 percent session IPAs.

Overall nothing special, lots of better choices out there.

Label says Rio Grande but phone number(505-832-BEER) and website (www.riograndebrewery.com) both point to Sierra Blanca.

12 oz. bottle reviewed 28 Sep 2008.

Poured into a shaker pint. Medium foamy white head. Almost flat. Clear bright burnt orange color. Very sweet aroma with a hit of resin and citrus. Starts nutty and bitter with some caramel. Slight bit of resin in middle. Aroma much stronger than the taste. Some vegetal flavor in the finish. Alcohol weaker than expected.

No real reason to get this again.

Tanks to knm for the bottle

A: Pours a slightly hazed caramel color with a small sopay cap, retention is decent

S: mellow nose, piny and resinous, caramel malts, and earthy yeast. Pretty malt forward, kind of grassy

T: interesting flavor..not really what you would expect from an IPA, but more pale ale like. Lots of malts, caramel, grassy and herbal hops. Bitterness is lower than normal

MF/D: Medium body, herbal/vegetal finish, carbonation is nice. Pretty drinkable but not really typical of the style

Light amber color with good off white head and lacing. Piney citrus aroma. Taste is hoppy reisen heavy with some citrus. Malt balances out the hops. Medium-light finish a little on the bitter side. Lacking some depth and complexity.

12 oz bottle without a freshness date. Pours a hazed amber color with an attractive, frothy cream-colored head. Retention is above average and the lacing is outstanding. A great looking beer.

Nose is piney and earthy hops with plenty of grainy malt. It could be in my head, but I smell cactus here, prickly pear to be specific...and yes, they do sell it at the local grocery stores. A little English leaning with a nice malt balance.

Earthy hops and caramel malt combine for a surprisingly decent beer. Most of the focus is on bittering hops, but there is a little bit of piney hop flavor as well. Malts play a big role in this beer and provide some sweetness. It certainly is not the best IPA out there, but this is not a bad quaff if you find yourself in New Mexico.
