This unique lager balances a rich caramel malt flavor with a smooth hop finish that keeps the palate crisp. Reddish-amber in color, this is a very complex California Common style beer with a great malt/hop balance.

(Served in a 1/2 pint tumbler)

A- This beer pours a deep dark copper body that is clear but very slightly dense with a strong carbonation of big bubbles that support a thin cloud of white foam that last for a few sips.

S- The light pale malt aroma hint has faint notes of caramel malt which turns into a sulfur aroma and the overall smell is pretty clean.

T- This beer has a dry crisp sulfur flavor followed by a soft Noble hop bite at the finish.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a full fizz finish and no alcohol heat.

D- Even though this beer has a dark body the taste and aroma are very light and thin. Not that much depth and the sulfury flavor covers most of the flavors as the beer warms.

Clear copper color with no head and carbonation is void. The aroma is a bit toasty with some caramel malts. Hop aroma is nill. The flavor is of caramel malt, and a bit toasty. Again, not a bit of hop flavoring or bitterness. Light in body, and easy drinking... the best quality about this one. My suggestion is pass on this one.

Pours a strange, slightly opaque copper-amber hue with minimal head. Nice deep aroma of sweet malt, with a hint of dark cherries, toffee, and oak. Thin, slightly flat mouthfeel. Moderately unpleasant palate belies the nice aroma. Slightly bitter taste, but not really from the hops. Malty notes, followed by a deep warming sensation in the throat. Not one I'd recommend.

Malty and slightly sour lager, overall body is on the watery side. Dark amber with small foamy head, initial sourness in the aroma can be off-putting. Finish is mix of sour and bitter. This one may be a matter of personal taste.

Bronze hue with a light haze. Lean foam collar leaves spotty lace. Weak woody hop nose combined with hints of medium lovibond caramel. Trace toasted malt hints. Middling aromawise. Incipient in flavor is dilute toffeeish sweetness, which leads into a combination of bitter black tea like and soapy hop flavors. Beefs up slightly mid palate, with doughy malt providing relief. Oddly becomes more watery as it warms. Lightly bodied and carbonated. Could use a touch more spritz and dextrin in mouthfeel. Finishes with a fading surge of biscuit malt and table salt. An odd, yet bland melange of flavors. Skippable, this one is.

I received this bottle of Outlaw Lager "bastard beer" as a gift from my parents when they traveled to New Mexico/Azirona.

The label art and name are fantastic. The label features a skull from a steer, perfect for an old west beer. I was also initially intrigued by the idea of trying only my second "steam" beer (the first being Anchor Steam).

This particular bottle had absolutely no carbonation and thus no head at all. Thus, the 2.0 score for appearance. However, the color is a nice coppery tone. The smell is similar to an amber ale...malty and a bit sweet/fruity.

The taste is that of molasses and malt with just a wee bit of hop bittering. I can't say that I notice any hop aroma or flavor. I would definately drink another (and do indeed have one more bottle in the fridge) if offered, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Finger of foamy off white head settles rather quickly. Lots of lacing line the glass.  Slightly hazy orange/amber color.

Musty/earthy/ malty aroma. Deep caramel aroma.

Very fruity flavor with a deep caramel/malt character. Almost, but not quite smokey. Perhaps some earthiness again.  There is a moment of sweetness and a long chewy caramel aftertaste.

Very subtle carbonation. Medium bodied.

An ok beer, but not one I would pursue again.

A deep copper clear beer with an anemic head that was little more than slight foam on top of the liquid.

A very nice mixture of the woody hop aroma with a sweet malty background. The aroma makes up for the lack of apperance. Makes for a very interesting drink and increases the anticipation.

The taste was weak and sort of watery. The roasted malts came through particularly in the first couple sips. The hops were added little if any bittering and did not off set the malt sweetness. The finish was sweet and not very crisp. Not anywhere did I really feel a hop bitterness. There were no off flavors

The mouthfeel was somewhat light with little carbonation.

This beer has all the maltiness required, but somehow left the hops behind. It was all aroma and not much else.

A: Golden, amber. Moderate lacing and head.

S: Big caramel notes on the nose.

T: More caramel, subtle hot nuts note in there. Aftertaste is a bit harsh, very herbal-y.

M: Easy drinking, maybe a bit cloyingly sweet.

O: Not a bad beer, could have had a smoother aftertaste and more fruit notes.
