Love this beer! Bready, great malty smell, large malt taste with just the right amount of hops to balance it perfectly. Love this beer...it's the perfect starting point for a night of great beers.
They got it just right if you love a complex lager.
By the way, the brewer and owner are very hospitable.

Pours a rich amber color, excellent clarity, thin white head. Aroma comes across with sweetness and cereal notes. Bread-like taste, slightly fruity flavor blending in well with the overall bitterness. Light bodied, clean and dry finish.

This beer is a decent malt-forward lager, malt and grain flavors predominant. Nothing exceptional, but another easy drinking thirst quencher.

12 ounce bottle served in a goblet, beer is a gusher so beware. Beer is brown and mostly clear with a big off white head of small bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation, low retention.

Aroma is caramel and yeast, smells nice.

Beer is medium in body, creamy and has a nice finish on it, mildly bitter not grainy at all. A fine steam beer / lager. The munich malt comes through nicely and the finish is good. I'd have it again probably.

Appearance: Nice sudsy brown. In the bottle, so hard to see.

Smell: Nice refreshing brown sugar malt. Some faint bitterness, but mostly sweetness.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Very enjoyable beer. Great balance of brown sugar and smoky pepper. Awesome carbonation as well.

Overall: I had this a while back, but definitely enjoyed it. I think I have to try this again to get a more accurate idea.

A deeply amber colored beer with just a wisp of off-white colored head. This is so deeply colored I could see describing this as red in color.

Smell is malty with malt syrup and noble hops as the main scents. Mildly fruity with a mainly banana aroma.

Starts out malty with a faint banana taste and lots of toasted grain. A little sweet but it has just the right amount of bitter edge to balance it.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a very tasty and easy to drink beer. I recommend this one very highly.

A: Golden, amber. Moderate lacing and head.

S: Big caramel notes on the nose.

T: More caramel, subtle hot nuts note in there. Aftertaste is a bit harsh, very herbal-y.

M: Easy drinking, maybe a bit cloyingly sweet.

O: Not a bad beer, could have had a smoother aftertaste and more fruit notes.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #49 (Feb 2011):

Visions of blazing six-guns taking down rows of empty bottles. Perfect clarity off of the copper-colored brew, and the decent- sized head leaves some patchy lacing. Clean malt nose of caramel and a hint of bread. Very, very smooth with a moderate- sized body. The palate is clean throughout, with a dry-ish malt character aside from a quick splash of caramel. Modest hop- ping goes right to balancing and retains a subtle herbal flavor. Hints of fruit and nutty, bready malt in the dry finish. A very tasty straight-up lager here--nothing fancy, just really good drinking.

Finger of foamy off white head settles rather quickly. Lots of lacing line the glass.  Slightly hazy orange/amber color.

Musty/earthy/ malty aroma. Deep caramel aroma.

Very fruity flavor with a deep caramel/malt character. Almost, but not quite smokey. Perhaps some earthiness again.  There is a moment of sweetness and a long chewy caramel aftertaste.

Very subtle carbonation. Medium bodied.

An ok beer, but not one I would pursue again.

First of all, this is a California Common/Steam Beer. I've submitted the change request.

A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a small white head of foam. It left little to no lace.

S - It smelled very malty and sweet. Some mild floral notes emerged as it warmed up.

T - It tasted very sweet with caramel and touches of fruitiness. There was a mild hop spice, plus it had a slightly smoky flavor.

M - It was crisp and smooth with a somewhat dry finish. A light bodied lager.

D - This is a pretty good beer. It holds up well with other steam beers.

(Served in a 1/2 pint tumbler)

A- This beer pours a deep dark copper body that is clear but very slightly dense with a strong carbonation of big bubbles that support a thin cloud of white foam that last for a few sips.

S- The light pale malt aroma hint has faint notes of caramel malt which turns into a sulfur aroma and the overall smell is pretty clean.

T- This beer has a dry crisp sulfur flavor followed by a soft Noble hop bite at the finish.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a full fizz finish and no alcohol heat.

D- Even though this beer has a dark body the taste and aroma are very light and thin. Not that much depth and the sulfury flavor covers most of the flavors as the beer warms.

A: Amber red in color clear in consistency and a thin quickly diminishing white head.

S: You can immediately smell the hops and malts. Also a faint citrus like smell in the background.

T: You can totally get the malts used in this beer right at the front with some hoppy bitter flavor. Also some molasses and caramel to fill it out.

M: Good amount of carbonation with a smooth finish but it is a little watery.

D: I would definitely get this beer again. Probably will not buy this beer again in a little while but I would definitely get it again.

I received this bottle of Outlaw Lager "bastard beer" as a gift from my parents when they traveled to New Mexico/Azirona.

The label art and name are fantastic. The label features a skull from a steer, perfect for an old west beer. I was also initially intrigued by the idea of trying only my second "steam" beer (the first being Anchor Steam).

This particular bottle had absolutely no carbonation and thus no head at all. Thus, the 2.0 score for appearance. However, the color is a nice coppery tone. The smell is similar to an amber ale...malty and a bit sweet/fruity.

The taste is that of molasses and malt with just a wee bit of hop bittering. I can't say that I notice any hop aroma or flavor. I would definately drink another (and do indeed have one more bottle in the fridge) if offered, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Bronze hue with a light haze. Lean foam collar leaves spotty lace. Weak woody hop nose combined with hints of medium lovibond caramel. Trace toasted malt hints. Middling aromawise. Incipient in flavor is dilute toffeeish sweetness, which leads into a combination of bitter black tea like and soapy hop flavors. Beefs up slightly mid palate, with doughy malt providing relief. Oddly becomes more watery as it warms. Lightly bodied and carbonated. Could use a touch more spritz and dextrin in mouthfeel. Finishes with a fading surge of biscuit malt and table salt. An odd, yet bland melange of flavors. Skippable, this one is.
