Formerly Dobby's, Cardinal has been here for a couple months now. The space has been remodeled and cleaned up a bit, tall shelves and more coolers, and a fresh coat of paint. Thankfully they kept the quirky suit of armor and free popcorn cart up front. Unfortunately beer is still sitting it the windows, getting full sunlight at certain times of the day... (lowers the quality score).

A couple staff members greeted us an offered help right off the bat. The cashier I recognized from my last Dobby's visit a year or two ago.

Selection has improved, they added a mixed six section with 50-60 assorted beers. After looking these over I easily put 6 together that haven't been tried yet. Sculpin cans, Pipeworks, Rev cans, full Bruery lineup, Stone w00t Stout, odd ceramic bottles of a Southern Star beer for $20, cases upon cases of macros stacked on the floor in the back. Import selection is good though focused on the tried and true over the obscure. German Weisse, Belgian trappists, Sam Smiths from the UK, etc.

Overall an aesthetic/organized upgrade to Dobby's, which always had an impressive craft selection at low prices.

I used to go here a lot back when it was dobbys. Back then you could find about 85% of what you were looking for, for a good buck or two cheaper than binnys. I don't feel like that's really the case anymore. Prices have gone up more than the selection, and now that two giant Binny's are open in Lake Zurich and Arlington Heights, it's just not worth my effort to stop in here as much anymore.

There is of course one exception to this, and that is their fairly regular beer tastings... free, everything they do tastings of is on sale, and sometimes a free pint glass or two are available with the purchase of the beer. That's one thing binnys can't beat. Check their calendar or get on their mailing list for that.

The refrigerators for the craft beer (along the north wall) are their biggest upgrade in the last few years, as is their selection on the mix n' match. Still, I have to agree with emerge077, what the hell are they thinking putting all that beer by the window like that?

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Selection varies slightly from the AH Binnys, so worth a stop.
