Formerly Evasion and Death & Taxes

Evasion is our limited release imperial Belgian-style stout aged on bourbon barrels. A blend of classic roasted malts, flavorful Belgian artisan malts and dark candi sugar create this rich and full bodied stout. Vanilla beans add smooth caramel notes, accenting the alcoholic effervescence. Conditioning in fresh Kentucky bourbon whiskey barrels contributes to the robust and complex finish. Be sure to savor the experience.

Looks good. Small khaki ring, oily residue. Smells dif than any other stout I've had. Perhaps Belgium yeast? Taste-wow! Can't pinpoint what it is that's so good here. This is NOT 11.5%! Very apparent alcohol. Very good too. Feel is thin at front, sweet bitter at mid then lingers for a while. Overall not super complex to me but really good! Thanks noyoudidnt for the share!

Pours out dark brown but a translucent one. Not a motor oil or an ink well. Aggressive pour yields a good finger of khaki head. Very nice looking.

Nose is definitely that Belgian influence. Vibrant and fruit forward. Bright. The oak influence is present but sits behind the malt and hops. Sweet, candied, dark dried fruits like prunes and fig.

Taste is a bit of a departure from the nose. Strong hop bitterness right away. Oak and roasted malt combine with the hops to create a rather unique flavor profile. Maybe like a rye bread. Or pumpernickel. Dark, roasty, earthy, bitter tones. I thought it would be a touch sweet from the nose, but I was bamboozled. After the bitterness fades vanilla and caramel are very mildly present.

Mouthfeel is a little thin. Looked kind of thin on the pour to be honest. Medium bodied is not terrible, but when one drinks a bourbon barrel aged nearly 15% ABV stout, one might want some more density and heft.

Overall an enjoyable and interesting stout. Just wish there was more density to this one. Its a little deceptive considering its ABV. But nonetheless a good sipper.

12oz Deadline canned 4.8.2021 (19 months ago) poured into a snifter at just above fridge temp 14.8% per label. Medium brown in color with light brown head. Bourbon, barrel, caramel on the nose. The taste is caramel and roasted malt with intense bourbon, barrel and ethanol all mixed together. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less that average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good, but not as good as the previous years. Marking the numerical score down a bit.

(Original review of Evasion branded can in 2021)
12oz canned 4/09/2020 (just over a year ago) poured into a tulip glass at just above fridge temp 14% ABV per label. The beer pours dark brown with rusty, light brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of tiny bubbles. Minimal lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring bourbon barrel, caramel and vanilla. The taste is semisweet caramel, vanilla, oak barrel, bourbon with dark roasted malt adding mild ash and dark chocolate. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, excellent.

Vintage 2020 - consumed 4-25-2021
This beer pours pitch black. There's a decent 2 finger tan head, which surprised me. What surprised me even more is the retention was pretty good. There's even a nice bit of lacing on the glass. It looks like a mountain range on the glass. Beautiful looking.
The nose is wow! Tons of bourbon barrel notes here. Tons of caramel, toffee, molasses, raisin, plum, and some chocolate.
Taste - There's a bitter hint right away that mellows fast into a dreamy mixture of flavors. Caramel, chocolate, molasses, toffee, raisin, plum, and I even get a faint hint of mint mixed in.
The body is good, maybe a bit thinner than I'd expect. The alcohol burn isn't bad, but hits up front, and mellows out fast.
Solid BA Imperial Stout, and a pleasure to try. I'll gladly engage in Evasion with the Taxman again, if I get the chance.

Had Evasion poured from 12-oz. can, label printed packaged on "4.9.2020," into snifter.

Pours apparently absolutely black, but deep whiskey-brown at the edges when backlit, with thin, fizzing tan head, immediately gone, finally leaving some concerning but not apparently injurious tan flakes of sediment. Rich aromas of bourbon and caramel off the pour, which continue, caramel ever growing, with muted dark fruits joining. Begins smooth and creamy, with only a little carbonation, then mild bourbon and dark fruit, before caramel and chocolate join, all leading into an increasingly warming alcohol finish.

Huge beer, with a warming alcohol finish, which is survived by the deep, lasting aromas and subtle flavors.

Lighter black pour with a tan ring. Dark fruit stars in the nose, fig especially, takes very well to the bourbon barrel, light roast and earth balance. Taste sees bourbon now star in a boozy yet not hot way, dark fruit, molasses and hints of caramel and vanilla are added before the earth and roast finish with booze. Feel is lighter for an imperial but plenty boozy and malty to cover. A very drinkable stout while getting plenty access to the barrel. The wife liked it
