First off, having just arrived in from Alabama, I want to make it very clear that no, I did not come with a banjo on my knee. I feel it’s important that you know this up front. We stopped somewhere a little ways back that turned out to not be what they call, ‘good’, so we bailed and came here. Didn’t waste the alcohol units on inferior beer and we’re further down the road towards, LA, anyway. Win-Win…
Large standalone on a corner. We parked in back because we didn’t know any better and walked around front as one does if they don’t want to just stand outside, sad, like the clown. A long, deep, cavernous space. Enter through a slight seating area up the ramp to where the action happens.
The inside wall holds an ‘L’ shaped varnished plank bar, with a panel base and a tragic lack of a foot rest; seating for 10 on mix & match chairs. 2 panels with 8 each handles nondescript on the barback wall, and a handpump on the bar, not in play, today. Drafts listed on a slat like board atop, a single flatscreen off to the right not on right now, and glassware shelved below the bar. A cooler with cans to a-go-go and a rack with bottles & glassware for sale down at the end.
The walls in cinder block, wood plank, and others painted play. A few SPB logo pieces riddled about and a USM piece on the back wall. Concrete floors & a black painted vaulted ceiling with large exposed ductwork & piping. Track spot lighting on the draft boards, drop coal mine lantern bullets over the bar, and pan lamps over the upper & lower seating.
We set up in the lower seating area. Nearly a dozen 2 & 4 seat mustard colored 2 tone plastic, fast food restaurant style tables, + some barrels to stand around, and a few old video arcade games. Our table has a mini ‘A Christmas Story’ leg lamp (it’s a major award!)
Up top, 8 tables opposite the bar on shared common wall benching & 3 barrel tables fronting. Some fucker’s doing their 30th birthday party and has all these tables reserved, grumble grumble. Swag center on one end and on the other end, views of the lab near the rear side exit to the out of doors. There are (like) 8 tables in a decently sized gated in space out there, and someone built a ‘soccer pool table’ from cinder blocks and turf felt on the end. The rules are posted on the wall there. It’s pretty impressive. And there’s a Mercury pizza truck out there, too. I would totally have gotten into it had I not gumbo on the brain.
16 beers on tap, I got through half of ‘em on shorty and sampler (Hex Clouds, IPA, 7.5%, hazy, tropical fruit, tasty; Crowd Control, Imperial IPA, 8%; Mosaic, fruity, a bit boozy but solid; Soul Glo, Saison, 8.4%; Belgian yeast, esters, bold, warming, a pleasant Saison; Apocrypha, Biere de Mars, 5.4%; Belgian candy sugar, spice, a bit of Brett funk, LIKE!; Maenad, American Wild Ale on peaches, 7.9%; smells like it’s seen a wine barrel, well done; Pink Fluff, Berliner with marshmallow, pecan, cherry, orange, & pineapple, collab with GrateFull Soul, 5.8%; tastes like Lucky Charms marshmallows; Milk Stout with coffee, vanilla, & hazelnut, 6.6%, um, yeah, it’s very much prominent on the hazelnut, which should be recognized by the Brewers Association as an off flavor; Sleeper Agent, Imperial Stout with Ancho Chiles, chocolate, vanilla, & cinnamon, 9.1%, this stout is excellent, the Ancho heat is perfect), but not the other half (Devils Harvest, Breakfast IPA, 4.9%; WeiBe Frauen, Hefe, 4.2%; Light, American Light Lager, 3.9%; Suzy B, American Blonde Ale, 5%; Mississippi Fire Ant, Imperial Red, 8%; Sangre Blanca, White Sangria Berliner, collab with Southern Grist, 5.8% Moon Man, Rocky Road Milk Stout with chocolate, almonds, & marshmallow, 6.56%; Mandela, Oak Aged Sour with cherry & raspberry, 5.5%). Soul Glo, Apocrypha, Maenad, & Sleeper Agent were the best of what I’d had.
Overall, the beers here were quite good. I could’ve stuck around some but N’Orleans beckons. Cool place, good crowd. We came and we drank, as are our wicked ways. I am the man that corrupted Hattiesburg.

A couple years ago, when tours/tastings were $4 and people never left the beer line on a Friday afternoon, it was nuts. Since adding the taproom on to SoPro a while back, this place has gotten even more popular. Great bartenders, cool tours, beer you can't get anywhere else (like the barrel aged Sleeper Agent) and a master brewer who deserves the throne he sits on, makes So Pro one of the to-go places in H-burg. Aggressive and proud of it.

The brewery that turned me on to craft beer. I haven't had a beer from them I've disliked. These guys aren't just good for MS, these guys are just good.

Hattiesburg, Mississippi has a tasting room. Here's what you get. Concrete block walls, concrete floors, barrel aged beer barrels, video game system, outside seating, great indoor seating, industrial feel, and great... outstanding beer. The brewery tasting room has a little shop area for shirts and whatnot. Bar seating and standing area. It is a fantastic craft beer tasting room and the beers stand their own ground at the brewery or from retail. If you haven't been, you should plan a Saturday afternoon trip to the brewery. Take a tour or not, the tasting room is on point.
