Having this after an a long hot drive down the 401. A new brewery to me. A lovely copper colour but the head didn't last long. Smells of malt and hops, Very smooth and b itter as an IPA should be. A very good product that I would gladly drink again.

Duggan's # 9 has been a bit of a new experience for me. I discovered this fine beer at about the same time that the brewery was shutting down....bad timing

But now the Beer is back and thank goodness in the same shape by which it left the planet! This beer is no longer brewed out of the downtown pub location but the recipe is attention to detail is still intact !

This strong beer carries a very micro-brew hoppiness and taste that seperates it from many other beers on the shelf. Although it has a very strong Alc. content the taste does not....Many strong beers have a boozie taste, but not this one...very full of life and a nice deep character.

Clear dark copper colour with a creamy, light tan head. Good head retention.

Moderate caramel aroma with a light grapefruit and mango aroma.

Bright, citrus, mango and pine aroma with an earthy floral note as found in some English hops. Very crisp malt despite the colour. Nicely hoppy and deliciously complex.

Medium light body with very crisp moderately-high carbonation. Really good.

A great, moderately hoppy IPA. Slightly restrained and a, dare I say it, "Canadian" IPA. Really nice on a hot day.

Purchased at the LCBO as a single. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- 4.25- Opens well and pours small head that is gone in no time. Nice dark amber. Nice!

S- 4.0- Tons of malt. Goodly amount of hops but the malt overpowers. Caramel as typical

T- 3.75- Lack of substantial dry hopping here. The malt clearly shines though. APA all the way

M- 3.75- Rather good but a touch heavy for the flavor.

O- 4.05- Pretty good beer. Enjoyable as a starter for one before moving on to something else.

Food Pairing

This nice little APA went well with........ Dynamite Sushi Roll

Enjoy!

Got this bottle at the LCBO this past summer.

From a 275ml bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, off-white head with good retention. Dark, burnt orange with next to no carbonation. Head fades to a thin film. A splotchy wisp remains leaving some dots behind.

SMELL: Toffee, butterscotch, some bubble gum and light floral notes. Bold enough for sure.

TASTE: Follows the nose. Toffee, butterscotch with light floral bitterness at the swallow. Bold aftertaste with malty sweetness, caramel, toffee, floral notes and some well measured bitterness lingering at the swallow. This is a well balanced English IPA for sure.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes dry on the palate. Good feel. Creamy and full for the style.

OVERALL: This is actually a really good English style IPA, with the malty sweetness of an ESB and more lingering bitterness after the swallow than your average English bitter. Really well balanced, well executed, and flavorful all around. Good beer and recommended to fans of the style.

Finally bit the bullet and grabbed a sixer of this stuff from the LCBO (hate buying six when unsure of a brew). Poured a one finger bubbly off white head upon a semi-clear amber body with crimson highlights. Not a lot of retention or lacing, reducing to a thin collar. Appears to be well carbonated.

Scent is grapefruit and resinous pine, plenty of sweet malt.

Taste is leafy, earthy pine, grapefuit and papaya, caramel malt, a little sweet. Well balanced.

This is a medium bodied brew with plenty of carbonation, semisweet and dry it has a well balanced bitterness on the back end.

A good brew and definitely worth another go.

Found a 6 pack of 275 mL bottles in Toronto on July 16, 2011. It appears Mr. Duggan is now a part of Cool Brewing Inc.. Also listed on BA as "Mike Duggan #09 IPA"

Pours a nice rusty amber colour with a small, tan-coloured head that gets retained as a collar, but leaves very little in the way of lace.

Nice citrus hop tang to the aroma along with a sweet, roasted malt backing. Bit of a lake water smell I could do without.

Tangy at the front of the tongue before a solid chocolaty malt backing kicks in. Citrus appears at almost the same time as the malts, creating a neat chocolate-orange flavour.

Very easy-going with little to no trace of its ABV until you actually feel it. Goes a bit thin on the back-end before a nice bitter after-taste takes over.

Hoping to see this outside of Toronto now that it's being made by a company with wide distribution. I'm not sure that I care for the under-sized bottles, but it's what's inside that counts, right?
