Binny's - Bolingbrook

Devil's Reign is straw golden as it moves from bottle to glass but turns harvest orange as it fills the tulip. An easy pour produces bulbous, craggy, snow white head at least three fingers in height. Large carbonation rushes through the body. The head certainly has staying power, barely moving after becoming meringue-like. This is a damn sexy beer.

The nose is fully ripe, dense with fruit from both the yeast strain and the generous hop profile. Straight off the tree peach and pear esters have their fingerprints everywhere. Clove and banana esters are thrown around but are both mild and complimentary. Grapefruit zest,a little sugary, and orange peel make up the hop profile. Animal cracker and sugar cookie make up the malt base and I like it.

The flavor profile has many of the same elements as the nose, most in fact, but each aspect tends to run together which makes for a more muddled profile overall. Peach and pear start it out with ripe banana and clove that for some reason brings to mind dessert and vanilla. The citrus peel is candied and on the back end, orange and grapefruit again, a touch of bitterness. The base is solid sugar cookie with graham cracker accompaniment. Tasty beverine!

They nailed the mouthfeel. The carbonation is up there and when added to the moderately weighted body makes for a frothy creaminess that's luxurious. I would never guess this guy is 9%+ Drinkability you ask? Absurd.

I had to buy this for the name alone, although I have liked the few other Une Annee libations I've had in the past. It's Belgian fruity, American hoppy, and insanely drinkable. I would recommend this to just about anyone and will most likely pick up more for myself.

On tap at Beer Bistro, served in a flared pilsner glass.
Quick review from written notes.

Hazy golden orange with a thin layer of white foam on the surface that has a creamy surface texture. Lasting coverage and delicate rings of lacing form in the glass.

Mildly fruity Belgian yeast aroma, fruitiness seems more attributed to yeast esters than hop-derived.

Pear and orange peel, moderately bitter, more Belgian IPA than BSPA. Smooth feel, mild peppery spice, light banana creaminess with a light hop astringency in the finish. Overall it's pretty good, in a similar vein to Haymarket, but not approaching the same level of intense fruity, juicy, spicy Belgian IPA's from Pete & co.

Pours a cloudy gold color with an enormous and persistent white head.

Smell was very bread like at first from the yeast, then citrus and pepper notes came into play.

Starts out with fruit flavors, I can detect pineapple and pear and some citrus. There is a bit of Belgian funk there, and finishes with a lingering hop bitterness.

Feel is very smooth, goes down nice and easy.

Very Belgian in character, but a little less sweet than I expect from the style. I find the alcohol well hidden, it is very easy to drink considering the strength. One thing I like about this brewery is they nail the Belgian styles better than most, and this beer is no exception. Worth a try just to show how well a US brewery can make a Belgian beer.

500ml into a tulip.

A: Pours a hazy orange straw with a big off-white head.

S: Aroma is big citrus, mineral, brackish yeast, white cake.

T: Taste brings more pineapple and orange, spicy esters, clove, black pepper, vanilla, leafy, dry but juicy, streak of booze.

M: Medium-bodied with frothy carb.

O: A little over-carbed and the booze could be better hidden. Pretty decent Belgian double IPA type deal.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip

A. And opaque yellow foamy head fills my tulip. White siludsy 2 finger head joins the party.

S. A nice year funk with some hop character. Smells delicious.

T. Very nice funk characteristics. Pineapple. Sourdough bread aftertaste.

Nice carbonation and smoothness. Light to medium body. 4/10.
