Shimmering black body with light brown lacing on the surface. Smell is cinnamon laced, with mexican chocolate, peppers, vanilla, coffee, bourbon, and a hint of maple. Taste has the cinnamon and pepper kick here and there, but the underneath beer is the perfect contrast, sweeter bourbon melding with vanilla, coffee, chocolate, with my favorite piece of the flavor complexion tying the spice and the rich sweet booziness is the almond, perfect complement for it all. Feel has bourbon booze up front, with spices in the middle and a balanced malt forward finish, could be a little thicker and cleaner though.

2018 vintage tasted in a Rastal Teku from a 12 fl oz can on March 29, 2019. 2017 vintage tasted in a Rastal Teku from a 12 fl oz can on May 9, 2018. La Sorpresa Might Meets Right is the stone in your slingshot. After aging in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, coffee, roasted cacao nibs, vanilla, toasted cinnamon, a variety of chiles and a hint of almond.

Released 2/17/18; drank 3/13/18 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a huge, noisy tan head; frothy lace.

Cinnamon, cream, light roast coffee bean & mild milk chocolate notes in the nose.

Creamy medium thick mouthfeel.

Cinnamon, cream & light roast coffee bean flavors up front; milk chocolate, mild oak & faint bourbon heat notes on the finish.

Not overly spicy, which I appreciate, but too sweet to really love. Good, not great.

Poured out of a can. Each can in the 4pack was a different barrel/variant which is one of the coolest moves I've seen by a brewery. I'm sure there are other breweries out there who have done a barrel aged variant 4pack but I would love to see more of this. But I don't know how well they could compare to these.

Mexican hot chocolate dipped in bourbon. Dipped, not soaked. A tad bit on the thin side but overall this was a great offering. I would take this over Abraxas if it was thicker. The spices are done right and more balanced than most any other Mexican flavored stout I've had. I didn't get that deep internal heartburn seconds after each sip from the peppers burning my esophagus.

Well done Temperance!
