Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin film of a white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some intricately speckled lace clung nicely.
The aroma had some swift semi-sweet to lightly spicey earthy to grassiness up front rolling over some rye-like character. Light floral portions slide in for a bit more complexity.
The flavor was a blend of the spicy to sweet of the rye, earthiness (assuming that's the hemp) to even add in a light piney bitterness for an extra benefit. Aftertaste was pretty earthy, rye-like and floral.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt as projected. Some dryness along my tongue.
Overall, pretty nice American Black Ale that I would have again.

The appearance is a jet black colored body that leaves an off-white one finger head that lasts for at least thirty seconds. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. A thin, nice foamy filmy lacing appears and lasts through half way through the beer and then spider webs into oblivion. The smell has chocolate up front with some light malty-aroma like qualities inside of a sort of coffee. The taste is balanced between the previously mentioned flavors and adds an earthy sort of hemp as well. On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body with a dry aftertaste. It still feels great on my tongue and maintains a decent drinkability for the beer. Overall, this is a good beer for me, though the hops were more subdued than most "black ales" (mostly non-existent) I still liked it and would have it again.
