This one was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance- The head frothed to about a fingers width, color of brown sugar. The body is completely black. It looks damn fine for a porter. The head was a little disappointing, but this body is something else!

Smell- Yep, that is awesome. There is a huge blast of rye toast with butter, some caramel, and then under that is the smoke note. Reminds me of smoked bacon and beech wood. Holy cow!

Taste- The flavor profiles are not quite as complex as what was on the nose, but I can't say that is much of a knock. This still tastes really good. The smoked quality of the beer is not the headliner. It is that really good buttery, rye toast from the nose.

Into mid-drink the sweet bacon starts to come through with some brown sugar quality as well. The finish carries some roasted char and bonfire smoke with a little of that sweet malt that rides all the way through.

Mouth feel- The drink is just above average. There is a definite slick quality to it that makes it easy to drink. This could be creamier, but I am not sure I would want it to be that way. For a smoke, you also expect this one to finish a little drier than it does.

Overall- The buttery-sweet nature of this beer that is a porter first with smoke qualities make it quite a delight to drink. The palate could be a little more complex like the nose, but regardless, this is a damn good beer.

From a bottle. Pours dark brown with a lofty head. Smells like a campfire and s'mores. The flavor is all about the malts, including the Bamberg smoked malt - but also caramel and chocolate malts. It's a really nice change of pace without the overwhelming smoke of a straight Rauch Bier.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with an inch of evaporating, light khaki-toned foam.

Smell: Swathed in a meaty, almost bacony smokiness are a collection of varied notes, smelling of walnut, semi-dried dark fruits, anise, black bread and a sliver of baker's chocolate.

Taste: A black breadiness rounded with tastes of toasted nuts, subtle chocolate morsels and sweetish cola. Alongside a black licorice vibe, it begins pulls in a subtly vinous, wine-like fruitiness midway and through the smoky, lightly spicy, soundly fruity finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin, nearingly watery body, as is O'Fallon's wont. Why is it there wont? I don't know, but I want to. I want to understand. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Why it gotta be so thin, O'Fallon?

Smells like smokehouse almonds
Little too thin. Then again O'Fallon ALWAYS seems to be. Kinda tastes like someone put liquid smoke in a black lager. Feels carbonated in my mouth but finishes flat. IDK why I keep buying O'Fallon. It usually disappoints.

Poured a dark caramel brown into a 10 oz. Bangkok Beer fluted glass with a slightly effervescent tan head that quickly disappeared. Very dainty lacing with natural carbonation present throughout . Aromas of smoked bacon, caramel and dark chocolate/coffee malts are up front. Taste is smoke forward with a long earthy/coffee type finish. Mouth is a little thin for this style, but would consider medium bodied. Very nice flavorful solid porter that I enjoyed thoroughly.

13 years since I reviewed this one; time for a revisit!
L: cola-like body; foamy tan head
S: smoke and malt
T: smoke & char, caramelized grain, anise, peat, leather, chocolate, dark bread crust, roast, earthy hops
F: light side of medium for body, ample carbonation, smoky & spicy finish
O: much better than I remember. Solid smoked beer here

Bottled 12/29/21; drank 3/31/22 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque dark brown appearance.

An even pour yielded a nice khaki head; nice lace.

Smoked bacon & faint fresh earth notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Smoked bacon, mild cream & faint chocolate flavors.

Smoky, simple & effective. I'd have another!

12oz bottle into a pint glass. No freshness dating that I could find.

Looks pretty good in the glass. Black body, deep ruby red when held up to the light. Small tan head shrinks to a fat collar and covering, spotted lacing.

Smoky aroma.

On tasting, certainly smoky, but restrained. Faintly astringent, but not unpleasant.

Mouth below medium, finish that faint astringency.

Overall, not unpleasant, but does come off a little weak.

From a beer of the month club bottle poured into a pint glass. Look has a dense 1/2" brown-ish head with a dense brown body. Scent is an excellent smokey malt: coffee/espresso, scorched dark chocolate, and a bit of spice. The smoke sensations are quite subdued on the tongue, although the rest of the flavors are quite in tact. Feel is on the smooth and medium-to-heavy bodied side with a bit of lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. A great all around smoke porter!
