The Pipe & Pint has a pretty easy to find location with easy access and egress. In the window are rows of glasses, some for beers from days gone by. All are dusty as can be.

You walk through the tobacco, cigars and pipes to the back of the store for the beer. The beer is on shelves and in boxes. Some of the beer is new, but buyer beware, some of it is old. Really old. On the shelves they had a few of Rock Creeks offerings and those beers have not been produced in over 2 1/2 years. Most of the beers had a layer of dust on them and with the warmth of the room I suspect the quality suffers.

The pricing is good and the customer service top notch, but be careful what you purchase if you are looking for good quality and fresh product.

I did not notice the homebrew supplies in the store, but it was a bit smoky.

A stop on the Greensboro Beer Run.

My absolute FAVORITE place to be. If I could write off all of my responsibilities for a week I'd be here 6 of those days, and that's only because they're not open on Sundays. Larry and Pete are some of the most knowledgeable people in beer, wine, and premium tobaccos. I've found myself spending HOURS here talking to these incredible gentlemen hoping I can absorb just an iota of their knowledge. They have the best prices for craft beer that I've seen. Even though they're focusing mainly on local beer they still have an incredible selection. Wicked Weed? they've got just about every sour that WW has released outside of the Funkatorium. They have an entire shelf dedicated to Haw River as well as Gizmo, and if you dig a little you'll find some real gems tucked away. Needless to say, you're not going to be disappointed in their selection.

Their knowledge, and ability to deconstruct a persons palate, is what inspired me to work at a bottle shop and do my best to emulate the way these men treat every single one of their customers. I work at a bottle shop in Raleigh but will always refer my customers to Larry and Pete if they're interested in learning more while also picking up some hard to find beers at a fraction of what they typically cost in Raleigh.

And this is only a review of their beer selection, I can't even begin to describe their wine and premium tobacco selection/knowledge.

Do yourself a favor, next time you're in Greensboro give these guys a visit and you won't regret a single minute of it.

Solid location with a really laid back vibe. The guys working here are super nice and knowledgeable on beer and I can only assume cigars as well. The price point is probably one of the best in the Triad sometimes being dollars below the other bottle shops and they have a really great selection. They may not get all the newest hottest releases but it's really not that big of a deal to go to Bestway from here.

This might be the best little gem in the Triad. Worth a visit if you are anywhere near, Pete, Larry, and Ethan will help you out as soon as you walk through the door. Fans of beer, they are friendly and informative. There is a pretty amazing selection packed into the store space set aside for beer. There is also a wine selection, and the rest of the shop is devoted to cigars. Tons of local flavors for the beers, as well as an impressive selection of European imports. Also, this is always a good place to look for any new/rare releases. It only takes a couple of visits and they will remember your name and face. It's the kind of craft beer spot you want to frequent!

I have wanted to visit this place for as long as I have been on this site, and finally got a chance to swing by today. Like others have noted, the signage for the place isn't the most obvious, so I drove right by and had to turn around. The store is set in an old house. When I pulled up in the back of the place, there was a ring of chairs in the grass filled with guys smoking cigars. Ahh. What a wonderful aroma to my nose. Nice tobacco smell when you first enter the store, as there is a huge walk-in humidor to the right as you walk in. The beer is sort of scattered about with stacks of cases and sixers smattered around. Though the majority of the beer is to the left near the back. In the very back, there's a room dedicated to wine, which is nice as well. As for the selection, this place has by far the greatest selection of Belgian brews in the area. I was amazed at the variety of Belgian beers they carried. Many of which I hadn't seen anywhere else around. There's one small cooler section that carries a good amount of 12's and 22's, as well as some kegs. I didn't see any growlers at all. The corner of the "beer section" is dedicated to domestic craft offerings, of which they had a decent selection. Grabbed a bottle of Old Rasputin XIV and a cigar and I was on my way. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

[Edit: They do now have price tags on all of their beers - in response to SaCkErZ9's review].

great place! a little crowded as the new location is a tad small but that seems to add to the homieness... one small tap on a kegerator in the back just for tastings and a small room on the side to smoke in. as the name suggests this store is beer, wine, and tobacco. upon approaching there is a strong smell of cigar and pipe smoke and its almost overbearing, but once your inside it fades. immediately greeted by the staff who was extremely polite, respectful, and very helpful. they knew their stuff. relatively small beer selection with a lot of trappist selections and and a few gift packages. prices ranging anywhere from $2-16 per bottle. small glass front fridge with a decent cold selection and some kegs. NOTE: THERE IS NO DRINKING ON PREMISES AS THEY DO NOT HAVE THAT PERMIT! I went and did not know that so don't plan on hanging there unless you're smoking a pipe or cigar. they also have a small glassware selection and even a fancy perfume decanter selection (not sure what that's about.) at any rate, its a good local buisness and I enjoy shopping there. as another note: beers are arranged by brewer (brand) and are mostly 750s and no growlers. just wish they had there on premise permit.

The Pipe and Pint has moved to a new location at 3160 Spring Garden street, just down the road from the old place. The new place is in what looks to be an old house. The house is right on the road and I nearly drove by as the signage was hidden.

I have been to other place several times but like this place better. As the name suggests, they sell beer and tobacco. The tobacco smell is a bit nauseating when walking in, which is one thing I dont like about this place. Another thing i detest is the lack of any kind of price tags on the beers. It is so annoying to have to ask what price everything is. When that happens, I tend to leave without buying anything because the hassle is too much. On this case, I left empty handed.

The guy working the counter seemed pretty nice. I just wish they would get some price tags; that is so annoying. I doubt I will come back. Plenty of other places that dont smell like smoke and have prices on the beers.

I visited this location a recent trip to Greensboro. Upon looking outside it did not appear that this location would be that good. However upon entering and going to the back, I noticed that they carried quite a nice selection of brews and quite a few I had been looking for. The cigar smell was actually pleasant when I went inside (I don't smoke). This might have been because there were only two gentlemen in the store at the time in the lounge area. The employees were very nice and chatted with me for awhile and made some suggestions on which other locations I should stop at for some hard to find brews. They also had a VERY nice glassware selection on the top of the shelves. This place is definitely worth dropping in to check it out.

There is a very similar place up in Ohio I remember from a few years back and as soon as I walked in that was the only thing I could think of, though the selection in Ohia trumpted this by far. Still though it was relatively solid and a nice little stop. I stress the word little as it is indeed a small store but they made good use of the space keep a good selection of the craft available in the area in stock for sure. Prices were a touch higher then what I saw at Total wine but over not a bad place to stop into.

If you haven't been in in a while, whoa!

The massive disorganization is gone and it looks great. Not sure what caused the change but it's a huge difference.

The selection now seems to be a few of the micro main-stays (Founders, Bells, Dogfish, etc.) and a TON Belgians.

Those of you who remember amazing service from the owner but stuff stacked everywhere, well, the service is the same but stuff is no longer stacked on bookcases (and in and around most of the store).

The main business is still cigars, pipes, etc but the owner seems very passionate about the bier. Nothing is priced but just ask, he seems more than happy to provide you one.

This is my favorite bier store in the triad or triangle. Larry, the owner, is one of the best customer service people I have encountered. He is also friendly, ready with a recommendation about bier, port, or cigars, and is always open to conversation about bier, cigars, and politics.

The bier choice is eclectic. Many american micros as well as belgian and german selections. There are couches and a few chairs for you to sit and enjoy the atmosphere of the place...very homey.

Overall, Larry has created a nice, friendly bier store that has a loyal following and clientele. I recommend it.

A smokey little hole in the wall in a small strip mall on a road with out tons of traffic. There were several wanna be "cool kats" smoking their cigars and talking about anything except diets hanging out as I came in. The air was smoke laden but there was lots of good beer!

I was not looking but it seems to me this place has little in the way of mass produced american lagers and that sort, but plenty of actual beer! There were good selections from Avery, Heavy Seas, chimay, Bells, and even a couple of the small bells kegs!

The owner is a very nice guy who was more than happy to help me sort through the piles of boxes that made up the "isles". His suggestions were very helpful, and he even sujested a great cigar!

The selection was good, some of the best in the triad! I feel I got a good value for my money, and will be back when my travels bring me to this part of Greensboro

I've heard/read a lot about this place via BA and a few friends, so in some spare time without the kids or wife around I checked it out earlier today.

Mostly a cigar shop with a lot of beer crammed in a back corner, I can imagine it'd be a lovely place to come if one was a regular. I was, however, a little intimidated by the hoards of mid-20's to mid-30's guy smoking cigars and talking a little loud. Add to that the fact that I was scared I was going to knock over giant towers of boxes or step on heaps of tobacco while I was simply trying to look at beer and it really wasn't all that comfortable of a place for me. As everyone has said, freshness is questionable and I tried to find dates on what I bought. Bottles were a little dusty, and moreover, some of the boxes I had to move to look at the bottles were dusty, leading me to believe some of the beer was extremely old. I haven't tasted anything I bought there yet (it's in the fridge) but I won't be surprised if it's subpar. On the plus side there isn't really any light exposure to the beer section.

The owner was very nice, and once he came over and politely asked me if I needed any help I felt a lot better about stumbling around boxes to look at beer when everyone else was enjoying their cigars. I had a few questions about some beers I was looking (HopSlam and Westvleteran were a couple I asked about) and he informed me that he didn't have any, but obviously knew his stuff. I'd like to go back when so many people weren't crowded in there and really talk to him about what he has.

The selection looked good, but it's so fucking disorganized that I found myself looking at the same shelf 2 or 3 times before I spotted something I wanted. Mostly microbrew stuff, but imports were well represented. A little disappointed at the lack of German beers.

The pricing seemed pretty fair, though the bottles had no prices on them so I chose carefully and just looked at the register to see what he was charging. A lot of independent places compensate for their vast selection by upping the prices, but my best guess is Pipe and Pint's were just under what this stuff might cost in a corporate store.

I'd like to go back with a little more of a beer agenda as it's not the most friendly place to browse. Overall a decent shop and a man who knows beer, but the delivery is a little off.

*Update* As I began digging into what I bought today late this evening, I discovered, upon emptying into a glass, that the bottle of Dogfish Head's Festina Peche was nearly a year old. It was bottled on May 31, 2007. Beware, and look for the dates harder than I did.

Update, Sept 15, 2008. I visited this place again after about 4 months, and I must say things have improved. The bottles don't seem quite as dusty and out of date, there are a lot more newer offerings, and the beer section has been cleaned up substantially; I can actually get to, and pick up every beer as opposed to having to move around boxes, step over things, crawl on the floor, etc.

Let me start off this piece by saying that I don't like smoking: cigar, cigarette, or any other kind. With that said I can tell you that The P&P was a nice hidden treasure. I have lived in this city for over 15 years and have never heard of this place until searching on this website. Its tucked away in a strip mall(with strip being the operative word bc there is a sex shop at the end)

The smell of cigar smoke hits you as you walk in with a lounge area directly in the front of the store. The beer selection is in the back of the store beside the humidor.

Now the things I liked about the space were the varied and hard to find selection that the space has to offer. Their were mainly imports from Germany and Belgium but they also had craft brew American stuff as well. The man working came right up to me with a genuine smile and asked if I needed any help. I told him not at the moment but if I needed help I would ask. He thanked me for coming in and left me alone to sift through the selection. At check out time I purchased two Hefe's that I thought would total 15-20 bucks, guessing because there were no price tags. I was pleasantly suprised to have my total come to 10 and change.

Unfortunately there were a few things they could improve on. Some might think this is a plus, but I felt that the unorganized nature of the beer was a minus. The tobacco was neatly organized, why not the beer? I didn't like the scavenger hunt theme but others might find that fun. I would have prefered things to have had some order. The gentleman did remark that they were in the midst of reorganizing so I might have just caught them at a bad time. Also as I stated earlier there were no prices on any of the beers. Again not a huge deal unless you had budgeted a set amount you wanted to spend when walking in. And of course there was the smell of cigar which permeated the whole shop.

Overall a great shopping experience and I definately plan on returning to purchase more from them.

This is a little cigar shop located in the university area of Greensboro. It has become my favorite place for beer. The owner, Larry, is very friendly and extremely helpful when it comes to beer and letting you know when new releases have arrived. The selection is abundant, but disorganized, but to his credit he doesn't have much room to work with in there. He carries a great selection of domestic microbrews and imports. It's kinda chaotic to search or browse, but if it's something particular you're looking for then it's probably best to ask for assistance. Also, if you don't see what you're looking for Larry is good with special ordering if it is available.

Some of my recent pick-ups here have been the Allagash Black, Avery Collaberation, DFH Palo Santo Marron, Terrapin Hop Shortage Ale, and Bell's Expedition Stout and Hopslam just to name a few.

A small independent beer/cigar shop located in the Lindley Park neighborhood of Greensboro, (conveniently down the street from my house)

The selection is good, and at this point in time the best in Greensboro, with offerings from Bell's, DFH, Avery, Heavy seas, North Coast, Great divide, Rouge, Highland to name a few. Brews from Belgium, England And Scotland are also very well represented.
The availability of seasonal and special releases is pretty good, I recently picked up some Bells's Hopslam/Expedition Stout/Third Coast, DFH Palo Santo, Highland Cold Mountain and North Coast Old Stock and Le Merle.

The service is great, the owner Larry is always happy to help and extremely attentive. One thing is that the beers have no prices on them, but Larry knows them all, and as far as i can tell are usually pretty good.

An other thing is the smoke, this is a cigar shop so the smoke should come as no surprise, but the beer is all the way in the back and the smoking area is in the front, so if you don't like smoke my advice is to go when they open or soon thereafter(the smokers tend to show up in the afternoon). The layout and organization of the beer can be crazy at times, but has gotten better, there are boxes everywhere so you may want to ask or do some digging to find what you want.

First off, I would like to say anyone should be wary of any reviews of this place that were made before NC increased the alcohol limit in beers (summer of '05 I believe). Before that, the selection was nothing amazing. But now, The Pipe & Pint has the best beer selection in Greensboro.

The overall quality is great, as this is a small independent cigar shop, so you know that the owner cares about his customers and knows his stuff. Which he does. I have never felt awkward talking to this guy at all, and he will answer pretty much any question that you have. As stated before, prices are not listed, but a) he will tell you the price of any beer without hesitation, and b) I have never been surprised by the price of any beer. ( My last trip, when I inquired about the price of the Ommegang gift pack, he actually whipped out a calculator and told me the difference between that and buying them individually, without me even asking) It is unfortunate for the beer lovers that don't enjoy tobacco smoke (because there is a lot of it), but for me, this adds to the atmosphere of the place. Massive amounts of cigar smoke actually makes me kind of loopy (in a good way). Also, as said in another review, there is no need to worry about light-struck beers. All beer is kept at the back of the store (no windows in back) and half of it is still in the boxes.

As I already stated, there is a fantastic selection here, definitely one of the best in NC, behind only City Beverage in Winston ( and perhaps others that I am not aware of). He doesn't have everything under the sun, but what he does have will leave the buyer with a very good choice. Belgium, England, and America are all well represented here, with a decent selection of Germans. Also a decent selection of glassware.

Only downside to this store is the hours. Mon-Sat 10-6. As the owner is always there, I understand, it just doesn't fit into my schedule real well. Luckily, it is only about a half mile from my house.

Enjoy!!!

A cool little shop that offers a decent variety of Belgian, English and German beer, some other European stuff, and an interesting variety of US micros: Great Divide, Weyerbacher, Avery, Bison, Dogfish Head, others. Some stuff was in a cooler, but most of it was on shelves. The owner was friendly and attentive, but not pushy. No prices on the bottles, which was frustrating, but I was always quick to receive an answer when I inquired about price. I even got my first-ever bottle of Fantom there, and that alone will keep me going back.

They no longer carry homebrew supplies, but other than that I was not let down. They even have an excellent selection of beer glasses, with brewery logos from top-notch US, English, Belgian and German breweries, mostly.

While I detest and avoid cigarette smoke at all costs, and don't smoke tobacco of any kind, I found the air in here to be thick with pipe/cigar smoke but, oddly, not all that annoying. It kind of added to the atmosphere (which includes cozy couches and a pot of fine coffee brewing--a Costa Rican blend at the time of my visit). The box I put my beers in, and the bottles themselves, made my basement smell like cigars for a couple days, which sucked, but otherwise this is a good mom-and-pop alternative to the EarthFare/World Market/Total Wine selection in beer-friendly Greensboro.

First I'll say that the guys that work here are super-friendly. So are the guys that normally hang out on the sofas while smoking various tobacco products.

With that being said, the beer here is not fresh. At all. The last time I was here, the owner told me not to buy 75% of what I was looking at, and only suggested that I check out the Rogue amber that they had. He had told me before that he intends to come up with a whole new stock soon... I've been back a few times and nothings changed.

If you have any interest in tobacco products, I would go here. Again, nice guys...they hung up posters for Pop the Cap events-- I just can't possibly suggest anyone go here for beer. Settle for SNPA from the grocery store or go to GSO Wine Warehouse for some goodies.

If anyone finds out that things change, please let me know.
