Guava GoseGuava Gose
Notes: Pouring a beautiful soft cloudy pink and smelling of a tropical vacation, our Guava Gose is like a sour mashed wheat beer dosed with the largest and freshest batch of guava we could get away with. The base Gose (pronounced: Goes-ah) has a balanced lemony tartness from the presence of malted wheat, Himalayan pink sea salt and coriander with a flowery bright smoothness from guava. The end result is a perfect balance of tart, sweet, and sour, leaving you refreshed and wanting more.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; dated Aug 10 2018 and served slightly chilled. I've had a couple of cans of this over the last two months, and enjoyed it quite thoroughly.

Pours a turbid apricot yellow, with more than two fingers of puffy, soapy, sparkling white head erupting after an admittedly sloppy pour. It recedes casually over the next five-plus minutes, leaving several rings of sticky lace behind as its level drops. A lumpy cap and generous collar continue to grace its surface; honestly, I don't expect goses to look all that pretty, but this one is gorgeous. Quite fruity on the nose - guava is the major facet, but there's also plenty of lemon-lime citrus and tartness, as well as underlying notes of gritty grains and salty sea breeze.

Tasty stuff - delicious, even, as the guava imparts a lovely tropical fruitiness to the base lactic acidity and lemon-lime sourness of the underlying gose. The wheaty, grainy malts and sea saltiness are constant background presences, with the latter becoming more prominent as you near the tail end of the sip. Light-medium in body; its texture starts off well-carbonated, fizzy and frothy, but then softens out quickly. It's probably the guava puree, but something causes this gose to feel a bit more, um, substantial than I expect of the style. Not a problem though - it starts to feel very smooth, almost silky once the carbonation exhausts itself, which turns it into a truly crushable sour.

Final Grade: 4.41, an excellent A grade. Collective Arts' Gose with Guava is a damn fine sour that I'd recommend to anyone interested in these styles. It's possible that I'm biased - I love their standard gose, and the addition of guava only makes it that much better. Not drastically better, mind you, but the tropical fruitiness does provide added depth, and is also liable to make it more approachable to those with little experience in the realm of sour, salty beer. It ain't all that cheap, but there aren't any comparable sours at the LCBO right now so I'm sure I'll end up buying several more.

A: The beer is very hazy yellow in color and has some hints of orange hues. It poured with a finger high white head that died down and consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of guava fruit are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has moderate to strong flavors of guava juice along with a light amount of sourness. No saltiness is perceptible.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and slightly tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: If you like guava fruit, you'll really enjoy this beer as it is prominently featured in both the smell and taste.

473ml can - there's a dumb pun in here somewhere, like 'what goes with guava?'. Well, Gose with Guava, obviously. I'm here all week, folks.

This beer pours a rather murky, pink-tinged medium orange colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves some decent connected streaky lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs out of sight.

It smells of pungent guava flesh, salted white crackers, some mild coriander spice, further muddled domestic citrus fruit, a weak earthy funkiness, and some plain weedy, leafy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and crackery wheat malt, saline solution, some still heady guava and indistinct citrus fruitiness, coriander and white pepper spice, a hint of yeast, and more well understated earthy, leafy, and floral noble hoppiness.

The carbonation is pretty tame in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, with maybe a touch of the spice getting all handsy here. It finishes trending dry, the malt bottoming out, the fruit holding fast, and the spices hovering like someone owes them money.

Overall - this is a stellar version of the style, with the guava definitely prominent, but it's not a one-trick pony, as the grain, spice, and hops keep everything ticking right along. Very tasty, and a pleasure to drink, I'm glad that I got a chance to try it.

Gentle to moderate pour yields a one (plus) inch white head over a slightly hazy light golden body with nice lacing. Nose of cracker and citrus. Sour taste with the guava coming through nicely. Very refreshing, good feel, and overall a nice job on a Gose from up north in Hamilton, Ontario. Cheers!

Hazy peach-salmon with a short white head dying to a thin ring.

It's very guava forward, a little bit seedy and a little bit funky. Peachy and sticky with hints of cracker, a full froth builds before an oceanic finish.

Wow, out of a can?!?!! They dialed this one right the fuck in! Insanely crushable yet intensely flavorful.

Appearance - Pours a grapefruit juice colour with a finger of bubbly white head that fades quickly.

Smell - strong aroma of guava, wheat malts, salt, coriander, citrus hops, and floral earthy yeast.

Taste - Lots of guava upfront followed by the wheat malts, salt, and coriander. The citrus hops and floral earthy yeast are followed next but the brew is predominately dominated by the guava with the other ingredients acting as pleasant supporting members.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes smooth with the guava flavour lingering.

Overall - An interesting take on a gose by making guava the star of the show. The flavours blend in harmony which makes this a very sessionable brew. This could've had the potential to come off as very sweet but the folks at Collective Arts have executed this well to make a balanced brew.

Tried a draught in Toronto. Colour is light yellow with pink hues. Opaque and cloudy offered minimal collar. Nose is complex of fruits and some herbs. Taste is sour but of a lemonade quality so quite drinkable. Slight salt finish and the spices definitely emerge here with coriander bite. Overall a really nice summer beer. It is a Gose so if if you are new to this style be prepared for a very different experience...but go for it.

12 oz. on tap at Thirsty Pig in Portland, Maine, in a tulip.

Appearance: Hazy straw with a short white head.

Aroma: Little hint of guava along with wheat and funk.

Taste: Very pleasant, smooth wheaty flavor along with the guava accent. Doesn't have quite the saltiness of a typical gose. Tastes more like a witbier to me.

Mouthfeel: Easy and light.

Overall: Nice "wacky" beer that isn't too wacky. Doesn't have a big sour or salty punch, but quite enjoyable.

Look is a hazy pinkish with a frothy thumb and a half of head. The head breaks quickly, and there is little left but a small ring of bubbles with no lacing.

Smell is absolutely fantastic. Sour guava jams down your nose and punches you. Then, the subtleties of the gose, sea salt and a grainy finish.

Taste is puckering tart guava. The tartness sustains for quite a while before the palate can discern other flavors such as salt, herbs and what I perceive as a wheaty flavor.

Feel is spot on. Light bodied with active carbonation, and such a puckering dry finish. It just makes the mouth happy.

I am really surprised how much I am enjoying this beer. I generally like goses, but this one really jumped at me. I think I need more.
