BOURBON BARREL AGED STOUT W/ STRAWBERRY & LEMONBALM

We created this version of our Origins of Darkness with our great friends from Brewski in Helsingborg, Sweden. Inspired by classic Swedish desserts we combined the flavours of dark chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon with juicy strawberries and the bright character of lemon balm.

ART: ROMY BLOCK, TORONTO, ON, CANADA

Served in a teku glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Semi-thick body coming off with a tan head rising maybe one finger's length off the body. Settles after one sip leaving steady even lacing on the body.

Smell: smells like a IPA, seriously, citrus aroma with a tarty sniff which lingers. Slightly awkward for any stout.

Taste: Smooth complex but fruity stout. Coffee mixed with lemon and tarts. Blended sour feel which almost doesn't count but you have to pay attention to the brew, it's super well hidden but it is there.

Mouth: Medium carbonation with a slight bite to the brew. Sticky with a full body.

Overall: Good brew, the mix of citrus and coffee and hint of whiskey is a touch overload for me but would drink it again if it crossed my eyes. Salud!

Look is very dark, caramel around the edges, with a small head that quickly disappears. Smell is nice but unusual. Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, a bit of strawberry and some slightly astringent lemon balm. Not really very sweet, and also there is some oak but not much bourbon as I taste it. Feel is a bit thin. Overall, this is good quality if you are looking for the strawberry and lemon balm, but I'm not picking up much bourbon barrel if that is what you were hoping for.

Thought took a couple of sips to wrap my head around, I actually like this. The strawberry and lemon remind me of summer lemonade, but they don't stick out horribly because the vanilla gives them an entry point into the stout. Chocolate, bourbon, soil and pepper all present in the darkness. Smell was pleasant and fruity with chocolate to wrap in. Feel is bright and a little astringent at times once fully warmed up, but otherwise a fine ba stout with a fruity twist

Excellent head production, and very nice retention and lacing for the style. Brew is super dark and inviting.

Aroma is nice and smooth, with chocolate, roast, and bourbon up front, before a nice light tartness from the strawberries and lemon come through. Lightly peppery.

Flavor profile is a little more tart right off the bat, but not really in a sour fashion. Strawberries mingle with chocolate, vanilla, and roast in the first third; lots of bourbon comes through in the middle, with sour oak, chocolate, and mash; strawberries return prominently in the back third, while the bourbon slowly recedes. Quite a bit going on, but it comes together pretty nicely. More sour and tart than a regular BBA imperial stout, but that shouldn't surprise anyone given the additives.

Smooth and full bodied. Very nice presentation on the palate.

Appearance - Pours a dark jet cola black with two fingers of mocha tan head.

Smell - strawberry, hint of lemon, bourbon, oak, vanilla, earthy and leafy hops, cocoa, roasted malts, and earthy yeast.

Taste - Tart strawberry followed by the lemon. The bourbon, oak, vanilla, and earthy and leafy hops come through next. The cocoa, roasted malts, and earthy yeast finish the brew off.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Finishes slightly tart from the strawberry with the oak and bourbon notes lingering.

Overall - A interesting concept of adding strawberry and lemon. The strawberry and lemon compliment the barrel aged stout elements by adding a pleasant tartness and slight sourness to it. I like the fact that Collective Arts and Brewski have created a brew that is outside the box and is tastes like a liquified dessert.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, tan-colored, somewhat long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of bourbon, strawberries, chocolate, malt, citrus fruit, and vanilla.

T: Tasted of a moderate amount of malt (present throughout), lots of dark chocolate (more than anything else), some strawberry notes, light vanilla, a good bit of bourbon (and its barrel), and light citrus (lemon). In general, an interesting flavor. It's definitely much more chocolatey than anything else, but it works. Gets better as you go along.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a silky smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A solidly made stout. Worth a try.

The first of the Origin of Darkness series that I tried. I wasn’t blown away by the taste, but it was pleasant. I didn’t buy this beer when I had the chance. The sample was enough for me.
