Notes: Rich, chocolatey flavours typically belong to porters and stouts. We're throwing you a curveball; a rich, chocolatey...sour. It may sound strange - until you try it. Our winter seasonal sour features sweet blueberries and decadent cocoa, balanced with just the right amount of tart acidity.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jan 13 2020 and served barely chilled.

Pours an opaque, dark purplish colour akin to blueberry juice; seated atop is one finger of pinkish-lavender coloured head that wilts within a couple of minutes, leaving behind a modest collar that surrounds a circular islet of film. A decent swath of lacing has also been deposited; looks fantastic. Notes of blueberry, currant and red wine dominate the aroma, with hints of tart raspberry and lemon acidity also apparent. The cacao is discernible, but not a driving factor, at least not on the nose.

Whoa - I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do, not being a huge fan of blueberry beer - not to mention the fact that a sour with cacao nibs sounded bizarre from the get-go. Yet somehow it all comes together exquisitely, with plenty of blueberry, lemon and raspberry flavours coming through at the front end, as well as a hint of dark chocolate that remains a steady background presence throughout the sip. More blueberry, lactic acidity and cocoa linger past the finish and into the aftertaste; the cocoa hangs on the longest, supplying a lovely, lightly bitter contrast to this beer's generally tart & sweet-leaning profile. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation levels that gently tickle the surface of the palate; feels very smooth and a little soft, with superb drinkability for a sour ale.

Final Grade: 4.31, an impressive A grade. I'll admit that a Blueberry Sour w/ Cacao Nibs did not immediately sound all that appealing, but I'll be darned if Collective Arts hasn't managed to make a seriously tasty one. The chocolate note on the back end perfectly complements the blueberry-sour forefront of the sip, and the end result is a well-crafted, delicious and unique sour that I must heartily recommend to any and all BAs who see it on the shelf - it's absolutely worth the premium price tag. I haven't tried all of CA's sours, but this is one of the best I've had so far, and it'd be a shame if they didn't bring it back on a rotating basis.

Randomly decided to try this beer and what a nice surprise. A nice sour option for the winter time.

Taste: starts off with a moderate sour flavor and finishes with a hint of bitterness from the cacao. The blueberry flavor is mild which I really like. A lot of sours can’t balance the sweet and sour profile, but this balance is nearly perfect IMO.

Color: The color is your usual ruby color you see in a lot of sours.

Feel: nice medium feel to it.

Firstly, this beer is blueish-purple, just like a blueberry. The smell is mostly sour blueberry with hints of chocolate. Underlying that all is some maltiness. The taste is blueberries at first, then sour notes, and ending the cacao. It plays out really well. It is not a very sour beer though. The mouthfeel is pleasant but it is not very carbonated. It is thick. Overall, this a quirky beer that I think really has experimentation pay off.
