Mild, zesty and refreshing, the folks at Tennessee Beer Works might have a brewery in the South but their hearts are in Belgium, at least when churning out their authentic tasting wheat beer.

Southern Wit rolls onto the nose with a bright and tangy perfume. Citrus, spice and the softness of fresh baking bread carry an appetizing scent. Its cloudy straw appearance crowns with an arid swath of sea foam. And those sweet, nearly doughy flavors rest on the front of the tongue like sugar cookie and a hint of sourdough.

As the middle palate unfolds, is sweetness lightens slightly and the fruit and spice character begin to build. Citrus flavors lead with a bold and radiant orange taste, followed by apple, pear and lemon. Slightly tangy, the fruit flavors are balanced by the spiciness of white pepper, chamomile, and the light herbal nature of green tea and sassafras. Light in bitterness, the ale has a glimpse of mild straw late on the palate.

Medium light and drying from its slight acidity and firm spicing rates, the witbier resists the urge to become an overly floral, fruity or sweet taste. Rather, its a slightly more spicy and rustic taste that harks back to historic versions of the style. Its aftertaste is citrusy, herbal and lightly spicy in a medium length linger.
