2018 bottling, reviewed 10/27/18

Look- pours dark brown/black with a tan head the settles to a thin coating

Aroma- oak, bourbon, dark chocolate and cinnamon

Taste- starts with milk chocolate and vanilla with a little oakiness followed by some pepper heat that continues to build through to the finish; a little cinnamon and some roasty bitterness comes in with the heat, followed closely by a little bourbon. The bourbon, cinnamon and bitterness linger a bit in the flavor

Feel- medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation; finishes surprisingly dry for such a full beer, with bitterness and heat lingering for a bit. The peppers leave my lips tingling

Overall- Spiced imperial stout with very complex and well-balanced flavors. There's a lot going on, but everything seems to compliment everything else, with nothing too dominant. The nose, while not bad, could have been a little fuller. Overall, though, this was a great beer.

Consumed on 01/07/2018
1 Pint 9.4 fluid oz. Bottle
Bottle date shown as 2016
Poured into a snifter

This beer appears black in-color, opaque, with a finger or so of a pale beige in-color, foamy but not frothy head with medium-sized bubbles.

Aromas of roasted malt, bittersweet cocoa lead, followed by a dark fruit, vanilla sweetness, and a whiff of spice that tickles the nose.

Medium-bodied, slick/oily.

On the first pour and sip, bittersweet cocoa and roasted malt lead but are quickly replaced by a pleasant, but intense, spiciness which is more dominating than balancing. As the beer warms, through subsequent pours, the intense spice mellows out and allows the other characteristics of this beer to come forward; bittersweet cocoa, vanilla and dark fruit, with a spicy, warming finish that lingers in the chest for a few seconds.

Overall I enjoyed this beer. (Disclaimer: I have not experienced this fresh) After a year It is a wonderful balance of spice and sweetness while retaining the characteristics of an American-style Imperial Stout. It needs time to warm a bit to allow the other flavors to come forward. At 13.5% I'm keen to let the next bottle sit for a little longer as I'm curious to see how the beer develops with the spices.

A well done big beer here. A bit of bourbon oakiness, a bunch of cinnamon and pepper flavor, followed by some heat and bourbon oak on the back of the palate. Love the heat with this one. With more dark malts this would Very solid!

This brewery continues to impress and I am happy to have them building a 2nd brewery here in Lynchburg, VA.

This one pours a pretty dark black, with a small head, and just a little bit of lacing.

This one smells like dusty oak spice, bitter hops, chili peppers, cinnamon, and powdery chocolate.

Like most of LCCB's stouts, this is pretty dry and bitter. It is a different base than the Despot series, so it's quite as bitter, so I like it a bit more than usual. The adjuncts meld well together, and none of them dominate the rest. The cinnamon and pepper probably are the most noticeable, and meld well with the oakiness from the barrel. There's just a hint of bourbon. This isn't quite as nuclear bomb strong as some of LCCB's stouts.

This is medium bodied, maybe a hint too thin for the style and ABV, with a normal level of carbonation for something like this.

This is a very solid BA spiced stout. It's not quite to the level of the titans in this style, but it's still quite enjoyable.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a small amount of foamy, tan-colored head that lasted a short amount of time. Not much lacing.

S: A very enticing aroma of chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, malt, and chiles.

T: Tasted of a small amount of malt, a bit of cocoa, a good shot of vanilla, a whole bunch of chili peppers, spices (cinnamon, especially), cayenne pepper, and a bit of the advertised bourbon. An incredibly dynamic flavor that's at its best in the finish - that is, with the chilis. Very complex and tasty.

F: A below average amount of carbonation with a very smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This beer has its flaws, but is definitely well made and tasty. Certainly drinkable.

Almost pitch black. Great aroma. Flavor is great with coffee, chocolate and a good amount of bourbon. Mouthfeel is thick and coating and finish is nicely balanced and not overpowering. Great barrel aged beer and another winner from LCCB

Sightly black, with tan colored head. Average head retention. Surprisingly Strong Aroma, Taste follows in the same vein, but is acidic and a little ashy, a bit of charcoal. bitter finish. thicker body, lower carbonation.
