L- Very dark brown, almost black. Small dark beige head with big bubbles. It fades very fast, no retention.
S- Toasted coffee grains, almost burnt.
T- Starts with coffee, ends a bit dry and muddled, hints of chocolate.
F- Very light and watery, some fizziness thanks to carbonation.
O- Not a stout at all, more like a session porter. This is a fairly good entry point to porters for newbies. Unfortunately it is weak in almost every aspect. Just decent.

Just been to this brewery tasting session and this was the best beer they offered, and it was plain, not outstanding in any category. Pours black with a very mild foam head that quickly dissapears, aroma and taste are weak.

One of my routine stops when visiting the City of Brotherly Shove aka Philthadelphia is The Foodery (Northern Liberties) because they have a great selection of singles, including CANs and that is where I scored this one for The CANQuest ™.

From the CAN (translated): “100% Craft Beer Made in Mexico and Imported”; “hand made brewing”.

The Crack! revealed that even the imported CANs are getting onboard with filling their CANs to the brim and that is exciting news. I was so excited that I CANducted an inverted Glug to help me celebrate. This created a nice pseudo-cascade which resulted in two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to just below Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) since cola highlights were visible at the edges, rendering less than Opaque. Nose was very roasty and smoky, almost burnt. Mouthfeel was unexpectedly full, like a dollop of beer had been scooped onto my tongue. The taste was smoky with a semi-sweet chocolate flavor. It left an odd powdery feeling coating on my tongue, as though it was oversaturated with something among its ingredients. Finish was dry but somehow less smoky or chocolaty as it had been in the mouth. This was kind of an oddball in terms of a Stout. Not bad, but not a standout, either.

Cerveza Berber Stout
12 oz. can @ Garage in Philadelphia, PA

Notes: Average appearance. Great aroma. Nice chocolate. Full flavor: Roasty. Chocolate Fudge. Background fruitiness: apple, cherry, strawberry. Hint of smokiness. Malty but not overdone. Balanced. Finishes dry with residual fruit and a smear of chocolate. Stout? More of a rich porter. Surprisingly good "stout" out of Mexico.

This beer shows up frequently at a pretty trendy mix-and-match six pack place in St. Petersburg, FL. I always grab it to accompany my frequent Mexican take-out adventures, and I'd say this is perhaps the best for a heartier Mexican dish. I'm surprised this beer hasn't been written about.

Poured from a can into a wide-brimmed run-of-the-mill glass.

A- For anything labeled a stout, I want to see something with body and "fullness." Unfortunately this beer poured more like a glass of cola than a hearty beer. I'm not really one for appearances except for the porters and beers of the world, and so I took some points away from this one.

S - It's got a nice smokey smell. Definitely a woody, mesquite-ish smell. A small hint of "beer" smell. A small hint of vanilla or honey sweetness. Nothing incredibly strong over overpowering however. I'd liken the smell more to a scotch ale or a black and tan than a full on stout.

M - The mouthfeel is rather lager-y, which to me is a good thing. The "after feel," however, does leave a bit of creaminess in the mouth and really makes this a beer where sips happen quite frequently.

T - By itself, this beer has a nice, sessionable stout flavor. I get a bit of nuttiness, some smokiness, but nothing too coffee flavored or chocolate flavored. Very woody, and the bitterness comes towards the back of the mouth. Little-to-no alcohol flavor. I'd say this would be a great introductory stout and a great stout to eat food with, especially beef, lamb, or slow cooked pork dishes that really just need a deep, bitter flavor to clear the palate for the next bite.

Is this the best or most complex stout ever? Absolutely not. But it is definitely a good pot roast beer, or a good enchilada beer. It doesn't really offend me in anyway, nor does it inspire me to go out and buy cases of it at a time. But it is a worthy addition to the "session" rotation.
