Very nice maple and bourbon barrel presence. Overall, I like this one a bit more than Midnight Sun's Berserker, which says a LOT!

Was a little disappointed with this as i had high hopes, looks and smells great but there is definitely something missing on the taste.not a bad beer by any standards but could and should of been a stunner, which it isn't.

Yeah, I got hooked on Grimm beers. The high ratings and elusiveness of finding one pretty much guaranteed that I'd pick up any of their offerings that I could get my hands on , which included this. I paid more than enough at a new bar up by my old stomping grounds at Columbia for this and after a month or so, finally had a chance to try it tonight during a freak snow event. It's a nice beer that's rich and decadent but I'm having a *really* hard time tasting the maple and bourbon, which was pretty surprising to say the least!

Dark pour to this that fell just short of motor oil, as the hue was just a few shades of brown above being totally dark. A nice tan head formed with lots of bubbles and the lacing was in the form of thick, soapy rings that coated a good chunk of my pint glass. Lots of chocolate fudge and booze in the nose with more in the taste followed by...sour mash? Maple? Bourbon? Yeast? I couldn't quite pinpoint it but whatever it was, it didn't mesh well with the cocoa powder that seemed to linger throughout. Somewhat sticky, slick, and strong, this beer had the consistency of maple without the sweetness that I would normally associate with it. Certainly potent and well-crafted, this fell a bit short of my expectations while still drawing me in at the same time.

This was strong but I knew that going in, and the alcohol was there from start to finish. Some people tasted apple and I could see that at the start but it's the raisin and dark fruits that lingered more than I would have anticipated. Not as thick or sweet as I would have liked, this wasn't a bad beer by any means. It's only the cost and elusiveness of this that had me bummed. Not a compete disappointment but I expected so much more given the hype and reputation of Grimm. Glad to have another of their offerings but this didn't measure up to the Lambo by any means.

I hope it was infected, because it was a messy drain pour. Metallic tasting with no maple and a cheap alcoholic finish. I'm guessing it was infected since I can't imagine a decent brewery putting out a beer like this.

This beer pours an opaque jet black color with a two finger dark khaki head. The head eventually dissipates to a thin ring around the edge of the glass with a microfilm layer across the top. It leaves a massive amount of thick webbed sheets of lacing in its wake. The smell is a bit subdued, but very complex. It opens up very nicely and the aroma becomes much stronger as it warms. Sweet maple is most apparent with decadent chocolate fudge, some roasted malts and just a touch of bourbon. Taste is similar, but much stronger than the smell. The sweet maple and chocolate on the front end intertwine gloriously with the bourbon on the finish. Bourbon taste lingers a bit on the aftertaste as well. Feel is a little bit lighter than I prefer for the style, but still medium bodied, slick and also slightly sticky. Literally no alcohol present. Overall a fantastic, world class beer. The barrel is just complimentary and not a super hot bourbon bomb like a lot of other BA stouts, but I prefer it that way. And the maple syrup is a really nice addition that adds another layer of complexity to the regular BADN.

In a snifter the beer was dark black with little to no head.
Nice aroma, booze and maple syrup. Some roasted malt.
Lots of maple syrup in the taste, a fair amount of bourbon. Tiny hint of chocolate.
A bit thin, and a little too sweet for me.

No issues with this bottle, whew! Pours pitch black with pretty much zero head. Can smell the bourbon and malts on this one. Can feel the heat at times with this beer, and really nice chocolate finish. The only negative with this beer is that the maple seems lost and/or overpowered by the bourbon barrel.

Purchased in NYC at time of release and aged in Atlanta. Bottle poured into snifter; rich black in color with thin head that dissipated quickly. Raisins, dark chocolate, burnt oak and subtle hint of maple greet the nose. Full body with light bourbon, hint on maple and raisins on the front and dark chocolate on the back. Flavors linger nicely.

At Fool's Gold NYC in a tulip wine glass.

Beautiful, firm and frothy head, khaki in color. Body dark as night. Lovely.

Smells of light bourbon and spice, oak and dark chocolate. 4

Flavor steps up. Maple enters the fray and adds a sweet, woodsy syrupy quality. Dark chocolate interplays with dark cherry and faint raisin. Finish shows a touch of yeast and barrel mix but segues to fruity dark chocolate and baker's chocolate. Lots of layers here. The maple really pops on the finish, lingering sweet and fruit-like, almost jammy. 4.5

Thick and layered feel on the mouth with only light alcohol feel. Drinks easily. 4.25

Excellent. Preferred this over the BA Double Negative. Very nice.

22 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: black body with no light coming through. Very little head in a a mocha color for what was there.

S: lots of maple and alcohol a little light on the Barrel characteristics, but a little chocolate

T: tons of maple syrup and sweet with a nice roasted malt finish and hints of the chocolate on the nose

M: thin to almost watery not a very good body at all

O: Love the sweetness and maple but if I didn't know this was Bourbon barrel aged going in I don't think I would have been able to tell you it was bourbon aged.

2016 vintage. 22oz. bomber into a Surly teku. Shared with schen9303.

I open this bomber and can tell immediately from the aroma that this is bottle is definitely NOT infected. Nose is fudge, chocolate, maple and bourbon. Nice but muted. Beer opens chocolate, fudge, roasted malt, bourbon, peat, tobacco and a grainy maple syrup. Boozy. A touch thin on the palate and a little too carbonated. Goes down hot with again, too many bubbles.

This is just straight up not as good as the regular bourbon barrel version. The body isn't their and the alcohol on this is a touch over the top. An example that more isn't always better.

650 mL bottle. Black body. Smell is roasty and milk chocolate-y. Bourbon. I don't get much maple, though. Taste is much sweeter. Maple. Lots of bourbon. Sweet milk chocolate and oak. Lingering maple sweetness. Medium body. Could use some body.

I've never seen ratings as scattered as those this beer has garnered. Here's my take:

The rise of the bubbles to form a moderate head was enough to indicate my bottle was definitely not infected.

Not a great aroma here. Smells boozy and sugary, especially right out of the gate.

Flavor is more substantial, especially as it approaches room temp. Sweet but not cloying. On par with Boris or event horizon. Not thick by any means, but not as watery as some have claimed. Think 2016 kbs.

No cause for controversy here. Happy to drink this beer.
