Minimal head. Red-brown color. Sour fruit smell and taste. Not extremely sour, but very balanced. Tasty, and would buy again (for a reasonable price).

This is a really nice barrel aged sour red ale. I just wish the oak character was a little more pronounced. The tartness of the cherries is sharp and really pleasing. Big fan of the cloudy appearance, I guess I'm a sucker for that north east thing when it comes to not filtering the hell out of beer. Presents well in a wine glass, serve it to people who prefer wine to beer and see what they think. Might snag a few converts.

Appearance wise besides the cloudy aspect the head is not very pronounced. I even turned the bottle over a few times before pouring to release some of the sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Whether it's yeast or mash particulate, I want some of that in suspension thank you very much. If I had not been told it was aged on oak, I might not have even guessed that was part of the equation. It has a very slight woody smell, but none of that vinous character I sort of associate with it. Maybe I should readjust my expectations for beer aged on wood.

Mostly what I like about this beer is the sour quality is really well done. It's more pronounced than some of the extremely mild tart beers that are being produced now, and it doesn't have any of the butyric acid that has invaded the landscape in some of the kettle sour beers that are being made these days. It hits the goldilocks zone of not too puckering, but not too mild either. Thank you Grimm Artisanal!

Mini review: It's no Red Poppy, but it's nice and tart, good sour cherry flavor comes through, easy to drink the whole bottle. In other words, not aggressively acidic, not too sweet (a lot of the "sour Flanders reds" wannabes can be a bit sickly sugary for my liking--this is not at all). Solid beer in a difficult but high heights style.

A- Hazy, reddish brown with minimal head.
S- Tart, sour apple, sour cherry
T- Not overly tart on the palate. Less apple and more tart cherry on the palate. Oak is present in the background. Nice complement to the tartness.
M- Light, medium carbonation. Slightly drying, barely.
D- Way easier to drink than I expected. A good beer. Not my favorite Grimm, but still highly enjoyable nonetheless.

I'll be honest, I am not a fan of sour beers as they do not sit well once ingested - but this is a GRIMM so it's worth the try! Poured into a pint glass - dark "cherry" color with no head to speak of. Hint of cherries and an almost "wine" flavor to nose; that has to be the oak cask. Tart and sour yet the cherries temper the beer. Enjoyable!!

Kind of murky looking reddish plum sort of color. Very little head retention.
Brown sugar and oak on the nose, slight vinegar note as well. Not hugely aromatic.
Taste is raisin, oaky tannins, red wine. Cherry is present but not overwhelming. Relatively mild tartness, with a slightly vinegary finish.
Feels strangely sweet and simultaneously thin. Sweetness makes this feel bigger than 5%, and I don't mean that in a particularly complimentary way.
I imagine they were going for something like a Flanders Red, but the end result is a bit lacking in comparison to the real thing. Ends up feeling like a watered down Rodenbach. Not terrible, but not particularly rewarding.
