When it comes to sweeter, heavier, roastier beer, the employment of bourbon or rum barrels are a smart choice, but just because its a sour, lighter, refreshing beer doesn't mean that any barrel aged fun can't be had. The Grimm brewers conjure a barrel that once housed orang bitters to access their own citrus, bitter and woodsy nuances that play off the ale's natural acidity, must and spice.

Bright golden and with a hint of wheaten haze, the glowing ale casts an arid and pillowy froth. A bold fragrance of freshly peeled oranges leap out immediately along with undertones of white wine, cider and other citrus. A brisk waft of sea air leads into a lightly sweetened taste of powdered sugar and angel food cake.

And as the slim sweetness further gives way, the aromatics of orange get bolder and bolder. A big perfume of coriander and bitter curaƧao oranges develop into a spicy, bitter and sharp tartness. Yet other complementing flavors of green apple, lime and lemon support the orange while light earthiness takes on the proportions of weathered wood and cork.

Dry, crisp and clean, the beer's light creaminess helps to provide a smooth roundness to the residual grain structures and supports the sour and barrel character without rivaling in balance. Sour, crisp and with utmost refreshment, the beer is a highly drinkable and refreshing choice with much bolder than usual citrus- particularly orange.

On-draught @ The Ginger Man NYC.

Divine lactic smackiness sets off the moderately high sourness of this neutrally malted wild ale. Orange zest and citrus is noticeable but complements the sourness nicely. Sourness is a 6-7/10.

Soft acidity makes this refreshing when coupled with its light to medium body.

A delicious wild ale with nice bacterial notes, though it lacks the subtle microflora nuances and spontaneous fermentation intangibles of the best expressions of the style. Oak is present but a bit reticent.

Orange peel without the bitterness. Tart, but it does not take over the taste. Reminds me of flora satsuma a lot. My favorite Grimm sour

On tap at The Revelry in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a slightly hazy bright orange, with a small head, and no lacing.

This smells super great- tons of sour orange and orange peel, a bit of sour herbal thing, and lots of lacto, with a little bit of funk.

This is probably the most unique sour that Grimm has put out. The orange bitters barrel is super prominent, and quite intense, with tons of sour orange peel and orange flesh, with super sour clean lacto, a good amount of dirrrrrrrty funk, and a really cool herbal and bitter finish.

This is light bodied, with a very juicy mouthfeel, and a normal level of carbonation.

This is actually super good, and probably my second favorite sour Grimm has put out, behind Super Going.
