Notes: Light Year is a Double IPA prominently featuring Wai-iti and Galaxy with background notes of Mosaic and Citra. Firmly operating in our hop candy mode, we taste typical Southern Hemisphere “purple fruit” notes, pineapple, dank, and spun sugar.

Finished work early today and it’s a holiday so I’m sitting at one of my favorite bars drinking a new Grimm IPA I haven’t had yet. Can’t complain a single bit about this turn of events, that’s for sure!

Pour is an opaque orange color with a dirty haze to it. Topped off with a ring of pretty retentive bone-white head that leaves behind some drippy lace as it sinks to about a finger after 5-7 minutes. Not bad, but not really the most attractive Grimm IPA I’ve seen.

Nose is very fruit forward with strong dank and berry-laden aspects. A little grassy with a light chive note in the background followed up with damp earthiness, pomelo and underripe mango. A little bit of Concord or red grape in here too. Definite “hop candy” element, as the brewery mentions. I’ve found that generally Grimm’s own descriptions of their beers are spot-on even though they sometimes seem pretentious. Guess the ends justify the means for them.

More candy-like in flavor profile than I expected too. Spun sugar seems surprisingly accurate, so again, kudos to Grimm for their outstanding self-appraisal skills. Strong dankness melts away quickly to reveal tangerine, pomelo and more mango. Bitter finishing note with a slight pine and aspirin element. Very smooth drink, though, especially for 8%. Solidly built with moderate massaging carbonation. Would drink again but there are definitely other Grimm IPAs and DIPAs that are more up my alley. I recall having one of their TIPAs at this same bar and being blown away. Maybe one day I can revisit that one...

Really hazy yellow color with off-white head. Aroma is really hoppy and dank with some cabbage notes, fresh cut grass and pineapple juice. Taste follows with intense hops and juicy fruits, mostly pineapple and sweet passion fruit. Medium plus body with soft carbonation. Really nice one, intense and hoppy.

i agree with the description on this one that it is very much like hop candy, which is not to say the beer is sweet at all, maybe a little in the middle, but thats certainly not the takeaway from this commentary, instead its like the hops are so concentrated, so fresh, and so fruity and almost crystalline that they appear like candy in the complexion of this, candied orange, candied white grape, pineapple rock candy, sweet melons, its insane really in both aroma and flavor, this is hazy ipa done right! there is no trace of its alcohol strength at all, and even though there is a little doughy density to the malt side, this drinks easy to me. the new zealand hops are so unique, and this is a cool way to feature them, so forward and dry hoppy, but the taste is as pungent as the nose i swear. lime and peach notes in the taste at the moment that its sweet, i dont think there is any lactose in here or anything though. resolved in the finish, even without any real bitterness from the hops. citra is the last thing i taste, but there is so much that comes before it from all these hops. a really smart beer, on the edge of overdosed but without any vegetal green harshness that so many have at this level. i loved it and i want more!

Poured from a 16 oz can into a tulip glass.

Pours a hazy yellow gold color with a finger of effervescent white head. The head leaves a ring of lacing before settling into a thin ring.

The aroma is earthy, floral, and dank. Lots of grapefruit and orange rind with some overripe mangoes and pineapple.

The flavor follows suit, with grapefruit and orange leading the way. Lots of mangoes and fresh pineapple with a finish of earthy pine.

The feel is medium bodied with soft carbonation. Very smooth, yet a touch too oily.

Overall, a very good DIPA. It's dank, it's tropical, it's citrusy, and it's highly drinkable despite the high ABV.

Hazy bright orange color, great nose
Full of citrus, oranges, pine, and tropical fruits...taste is quite bitter. Overall a nice beer but a little too bitter;
Good but they have many better IPA’s.

Closer to amber than gold. Cloudy, giving the brew a peach juice look. Nice rings after each sip despite the smaller head.

The smell leans to the hop but there's a distinct apricot nose.

Smooth start with a frothy pale malt beginning. The hop takes over completely in the swallow, leaving a bitter finish. The body is fuller than expected with enough carbonation to cut it from being notable. Relatively long aftertaste with some balance considering the bitterness.

Hazy, pale orange with some floating particles. White sticky head leaves bands of lacing behind. Smells pungent, dank, citrusy with a sweet candy scent. Taste is sweet upfront with a sort of orange baby aspirin quality, lots of orange and grapefruit with a big pine and grapefruit pith finish. Really tasty beer.

16oz. can into Night Shift stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Nose is pineapple, starfruit and citrus. Big sweetness and tropical fruit notes. Beer opens citrus, grapefruit and young pineapple. Big malt presence. Cane sugar with a fruity tartness. Dry finish with a bitter hop filminess. Solid. Body is light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Smooth on the palate and soft and quenching going down. Real drinkable and pretty impressive considering the ABVs. Dry finish.

Very solid but not unlike their other offerings.

Pours a deep, hazy, golden straw color with a large white head on an aggressive pour out of a can dated 11/30/16. Head receded after a couple minutes to a thin layer on top with a edge ring.

Floral hops to begin with that reveals mango, peach, and pine. A very nice mixture of aromas, none overpowering. There's a dank note that emerges with some sniffs, and other times not at all.

Taste follows closely along the aroma. The floral aspect is nicely complex, never sticking around too long on a single note, and is the main player. The fruits come and go, but the the dank is more prevalent here.

At the lower end of Medium, little carbonation but a very nice resin that coats the tongue.

Damn tasty beer. It's nice to have an (D)IPA that doesn't focus solely on the juiciness side of things. Very well balanced, as I've come to expect with Grimm offerings, and am rarely disappointed.

I had this on draught at a tavern. It was served in a DFH goblet. It poured a cloudy apricot color with one finger of egg shell-colored head and lacing. Due to the temperature at which the beer was served, the head was minimal. It is very aromatic with aromas of mango, peach, tangerine, pine, and floral hops. The taste largely follows the nose: it's dank with sweet peach and tangerine, lemon peel, pine needles, and is fairly bitter Galaxy, Mosaic, and Citrus hops. This ale is light, crisp, medium-bodied and not boozy despite its 8% ABV. Overall, this is one tasty DIPA. I've really enjoyed everything from Grimm that I've tasted.

Canned 11/30/16. Virtual Pliny The Elder imposter. Clear, pale look with very little head. Floral, citrus on the nose. Grapefruit explosion on first sip. Good mouthfeel, zero booze detected at 8%. Great beer from Grimm!

Traded out for this a while ago, as this beer had a "Canned on" date of 11/30 on the bottom. I've enjoyed most of Grimm's other offerings and while this wasn't quite up to those, this was a very enjoyable beer that had most of the traits that were found in Grimm's other popular offerings.

The pour to this was what one would expect from a Grimm Ale - Bright, translucent, nice head, and a rich apricot hue that once again, seemed to make the light coming into it look better when viewed through the liquid! It took a while for the head to settle as there lots of rings of soapy lacing left behind as I worked my way through it. Passion and stone fruit filled the nose as there was even more of the mango, papaya, apricot, and nectar in the taste. A nice earthy grassiness was found underneath those with a bit of sap thrown in for good measure. Incredibly smooth and somewhat waxy, this left behind a nice, slick coating on my palate as it went down oh-so-easily with just a bit of candied sweetness and plain malt to round things out.

Not strong nor weak in the alcohol department, this beer had plenty of kick to it without the hint of any booze in the taste. There was just a slight warming effect that could be felt once I finished this off but this beer was more about the level of craft that it exhibited more than anything else. None of Grimm's Ales hit you up front but they all grow on you over time as they warm up as the nuances emerge. Truly, they are light years ahead of most other offerings out there. Solid stuff in line with their other cans that I've been fortunate enough to obtain!

I had this and Zap during the same session on a few occasions, interestingly enough, and I vacillated between which I liked more. This being the last of my cans of both beers, I found I favored this one over Zap as it didn't have the sharp, dry bitterness of Zap and a delicious, sweet tropical flavor. Passionfruit and unripe mango would be the two fruits I had hazard to attach to it.

Body-wise, this is smooth, full and easy-drinking and mellow on the bitterness. Good good.

Canned 11/30/16, pours hazy gold color with a 1 finger white foamy head that faded slowly and leaves excellent foamy lacing. Par for the course good looks for Grimm.

Smells of tangerine, orange peel, lemon zest, grapefruit, pineapple, guava, tropical fruit, sweet malt, graham cracker, faint caramel and then more lemony citrus notes that make this like a tropical bouquet which covers the ABV masterfully.

Tastes very juicy with tangy citrus hops, piney hops and a mix of zesty citrus fruit including clementine, tangerine, orange, lemon, grapefruit and guava, then comes dry floral hops, sweet malt, graham cracker, faint caramel, peppery spices, coriander, brown sugar and a sharp bitterness like a fresh grapefruit. Complex, balanced and masterfully hiding the ABV, it went down like a session IPA and could have fooled me that it was an 8% ABV DIPA. Grimm kicks ass and this is another great offering that was smooth and creamy feeling, having the feel that every IPA should try to achieve.

Nov. 2017 Update: Had can dated 10/30/17 and it was very hoppy again, almost like it was dry hopped. I assume it was made the same way with Wai-iti and Galaxy, it was tropical with a lot of citrus zest. The feel was incredibly smooth again, really impressive how easy they made this DIPA flow down - dangerously easy to dink. Great stuff 2 years in a row.

Golden body of ale with a slight haze under a fluffy white head. Big citrus aromas foreshadow the creamy sweet grapefruit bath that follows. Medium-light body is soft and plush. Citrus is bright and fresh, bringing the aforementioned grapefruit elements, underscored with hints of lime and white grape. Super-drinkable at 8% abv, with a clean finish... Features Wai-iti, Galaxy, Mosaic, and Citra hops.

On tap at bar great harry. Brooklyn

Pours a hazy golden

Smell- tropical, piney

Taste - I got a lot of peach upfront. That touch of candy sweetness but dry and creamy.

Pillowy soft carbonation and mouthfeel.

This beer really came alive. It's complex, assertive without being overwhelmingly intense

Overall- I've been waiting for Grimm to release more Lambo door and this really reminded me of that. I loved it. To me these dipa's are a revelation.
