Reviewed from notes. 22 oz. bottle purchased locally in May 2017. Consumed on 12/31/19. Poured into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.
A: Very dark brown to black, and opaque. Forms a half-finger of tan head with decent retention before giving way to a ring of foam. A pretty good amount of visible carbonation for style.
S: Some roasty malts, tobacco, and a light vanilla. More dark chocolate and milder coffee. It has some appeal on the nose, but I’m surprised and a little disappointed to not be getting any maple aroma. Oh well.
T: Roasted malts, with sweet vanilla and dark chocolate in balance. Still some dried tobacco, toffee, and overall malt sweetness. Dry and bitter roastiness, then more vanilla. Still not getting any maple. Lingering roast and maybe some hop bitterness with the bitterness of 99% cacao nibs in the hang.
M: A nice thick, sticky body – not over the top Florida-stout level, but nice for style. Carbonation overall low but on par for style. Alcohol warming but doesn't detract.
O: A little of a let down to find no maple on the nose or the palate. But otherwise a decent balance between sweet and bitter, chocolate and vanilla. I'm unsure if the maple faded over the two-plus years? But it’s not any sort of significant presence in this bottle at least. As it is, this is fine but not outstanding.

A shiny black ribbon pours out of the bottle, building a moderate tan foam that settles to a bubbly film and creamy ring leaving even layers of tan necklaces on the glass.
Smell is vanilla, banana skin, a hefty level of roasted malt and coffee with cocoa, nuts and a hint of molasses.
Taste is tangy, nutty maple, coffee, roasty cocoa-esque malt and a hint of woody pine. The maple is light and almost gives a hint of cinnamon, but the bitterness in the coffee wins the day by the slimmest of margins.
A slick medium-light body has a crisp carbonation for the style, finishing semi-dry.

2/2017.
Coffee black-brown body with a thin pale khaki finger of head.
The nose imparts mostly roasted malt notes with hints of coffee, tobacco, and fig, with alcohol notes following. Very slight banana. I don't get much of any sweetness from the aroma.
The flavor is mostly torched and burnt malts, with an underlying and slightly peppery coffee base, some mild milk sugar, and a hint, just a hint of metallic maple syrup.
Feel is creamy and milky with a little bit of buzzing carbonation. Slight toasty finish.
Overall, sugarmaker was a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting more up front sweetness and less harshness. It's an ok beer but don't go completely out of your way to acquire it.

bottle from Feb 2017.
awesome looking beer, pours out dark brown, black in the glass with a super dense and creamy tan head, soapy suds atop...great retention and some nice lacing left behind. aromas are subdued, but definite roasty and sweet malts, slight bitterness. on palate is more roasty malt notes, toasty bordering on burnt qualities, creamy lactose, molasses, chocolate, slightly green bitterness, smooth vanilla, and a sugary sticky sweetnesss likely from the maple, pretty subtle until it warms. overall has an awesome balance of sweetness and roasty/bitter qualities, absolutely no booze detected and mouthfeel is pretty smooth - lactose definitely apparent, medium minus body. insanely easy to drink, great offering and has definitely held up well over the past few months!

Pours brown-black with a finger of khaki foam sitting on top. Not much head formation, but what does form retains fairly well with no lacing left behind. Aroma is lactose sugar with immediate sugary-sweet notes of maple syrup, and vanilla bean. Toasted, roasted, and nutted malts add a little oomph - although not much. Flavor profile is a smooth induction of lactose sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla bean. Nice dose of roasted and toasted malts giving it the depth of a nice milk stout. Mouth feel starts off a little thin, almost like a maple syrup (although thicker). Thickness becomes a little more robust as the beer warms on the palate. It has a tiny bit of fizziness to it keeping it from being completely smooth and creamy. Overall, maple syrup and vanilla bean work well within the milk stout style to give this beer a little more a dessert-like flavor. While this would make an excellent dessert beer, it also isn't so incredibly sugary that it actually performs well outside of a dessert beer role.
