Very Good
Notes: A fresh addition to the dual-hopped Maximum universe — Maximum Impulse! Featuring Cashmere and Simcoe hops, we're getting refreshing notes of shaved coconut, cool mint, and slightly under ripe honeydew and pineapple. With bright yet restrained tropical notes and a balanced body, this is a perfect anytime-of-day IPA!

CANNED ON 03/30/20

Hazy golden orange with a thick frothy head. Aroma features that unique Cashmere coconut-like quality along with dried pineapple and flowers. Bright tropical fruit juice hoppiness: pineapple, melon, lemongrass, muddled herbs, and some lingering pine resin. Plush medium body with a dry finish. Good stuff - exploring new hop varieties and combinations keeps IPAs interesting.

From Untappd, “Featuring Cashmere and Simcoe hops, we're getting refreshing notes of shaved coconut, cool mint, and slightly under ripe honeydew and pineapple. With bright yet restrained tropical notes and a balanced body, this is a perfect anytime-of-day IPA. “

Canned on 3.30.20, opened on 4.12.30, poured into a teku

One finger off white big bubbled foam cap, recedes after three minutes to a big bubble ring and islands over a hazy orange liquid, some lacings

Aroma is tropical fruits, juicy fruit gum, whiff of pineapple

Taste is tropical fruits, hint of coconut

Medium sudsing, hop taste, slight nibble, semi dry finish

Good beer

Wow, more Grimm IPAs hitting NE distro! After the apparently well-received Lambo Door (aka one of the best no-coast DIPAs I've ever had), it seems a small drop of some newer hoppy beers from Grimm has shown up on the doorsteps of finer beer ventures around my area. Maximum Impulse features Cashmere and Simcoe hops on top of a lean, mean 6.5% ABV IPA.

The pour is hazier than I expected, though I guess given that this is not listed as a New England IPA, I probably was led a bit astray. It's a slightly-translucent golden yellow color with a nice, voluminous head of bone-white foam that leaves behind some sticky lacing as it settles to about a quarter-finger. Good legs and surface coverage here as well. No real complaints, though I definitely think this qualifies as an NEIPA.

The nose highlights the confounding relationship between Cashmere and Simcoe in a very obvious way, but I will say that they play such a nice counterpoint that they end up working together in odd ways as well. Cashmere is a bit subtle but complex, with notes ranging from lighter citrus to coconut to herbal undertones, while Simcoe is a true bruiser in every sense of the word. Though typically hard-hitting and dense with pine and grapefruit, it somehow feels lightly-tempered by its friend in this beer, at least upfront, as the combination has a mostly round, lightly citrusy, and vaguely "tannic" aroma to it. Though it doesn't jump out of the glass, its subtle underpinnings bring about unique notes of estery goodness and a touch of herbal interest.

The flavor profile is round and intriguing, coming forth with an initial wave of light citrus and chalky yeast before the mid-palate lends a bit of graininess to the proceedings before the transition to finish alludes to melon, pomelo, passion fruit, some bitter pine resin tones, and a light tannic/coconut flavor element that seems almost-solely attributable to the Cashmere addition. The finish is honestly where a lot of the interest here comes from... I recall my first few sips just being kind of "eh, it's alright" until the unique hop notes started peeking out. I would definitely buy this again, as it straddles the line between a good ol' drinkable hazy IPA and a really flavorful, thought-provoking one. Worth a four-pack venture for those who find the beer described in this review interesting, for sure.
