The Obscure Barrel Aged Barleywine
350mL bottle into a tulip
Drank several months ago, but review was done live.

A: Pours a very very dark brown, nearly black in the glass, with just a few fizzy tan bubbles for a head. Those bubbles fade nearly instantaneously, and there is no lacing whatsoever. 3.5

S: Aroma is huge, and really fantastic. Super rich with toffee, dark fruits, and cocoa. Candied sugar, sweet malts galore. Fine aged rhum to round it out. I can’t underestimate the depth of dark fruit aromas going on here. Nearly perfect. 5

T: Taste is also incredibly rich, but some slightly different characters. More rhum, but an elite long aged rhum, not cheap crappy rum. Dark fruits are still there, and theres tons of sugary sweetness. Caramel and toffee round out the sweetness. Some earthy notes to balance. 4.5

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation very low but not at the point of being flat. ABV is somewhat noticeable but in a good way, and drinkability is very good all things considered. 4

O: Exceptional beer. Not that familiar with Green Bench, but wow am I impressed. Well done. 4.75

Very dark brown rust color. A thin head forms and quickly disappears completely, leaving no lace to speak of. Aromas of dark baker's cocoa, pipe tobacco, burnt sugar and rum. Massive flavors of rum soaked raisins up front with caramel, brown sugar, toffee and figs on the finish. Full texture, thick and syrupy with low carbonation. Sweet, boozy and decadent.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with very slight visible carbonation and only a few stray bubbles around the edge of the glass. Aroma of dark caramel malt, figs, dates, dried plums, oak, cardboard oxidation and faint rum, a little boozy but rich. Flavor is dark caramel malt, raisins, figs, dried and fresh plums, rum and hints of nuts. Nice residual raisiny rum finish. Medium bodied with mild creaminess and sufficient carbonation despite the still pour. A rich, complex barleywine solidly in the English tradition. Both the aroma and flavor have a surprising oxidation note that I would expect from a barleywine that has been cellared for quite a while. The smell is of dried fruit, but the taste has more bright fresh fruit notes due to the rum influence. The Obscure is a very pleasant rum barrelled English barleywine that may not need much aging to get the full benefit of the aging process; everything tastes fully developed right now. Full flavored and warming. Rum and barleywine complement each other very nicely and I liked this a lot.

Dark appearance with no head. Aroma is a sweet malt. Taste is a very smooth sweet malt without any hint of alcohol. It is slightly watery for my taste but still an excellent barleywine.

S: huge sweet rum barrel with that awesome caramel covered raisins aroma. Damn this smells great

F: super smooth while being fairly thick.

Look: It pours very dark brown with a brown head. Head retention is very low.

Smell: It has an intense malty rich aroma. There are bread and toffee aromas with some nuts mixed in. There are some molasses notes in the background. There are a few low earthly notes in the background as well.

Taste: It has a very malty rich flavor that is highlighted by toffee and molasses. There is a moderate degree of nuts in the flavor. It is moderately sweet in the flavor overall. There is a very low chocolate note.

Feel: It is full bodied bordering on being chewy with very smooth alcohol warming.

Overall, this is a rich and excellent brewed beer that has bold flavors with a quality warming without any harshness.

Pours into a stemmed glass a deep dark mahogany with a thinner light beige head atop that is gone quickly.Deep rich caramel, raisin, and nut aromas with lingering nougat-like notes, very rich and inviting to say the least.Very slick in the mouth, nada on the carbonation.Caramel and a slight green apple-like acidity upfront on the palate that the deep brown sugar and raisin-like sweetness takes over into the finish not to mention the hefty alcohol.Like a rum cake in a bottle to put it plainly,it's damn good but a sipper that's for sure.
