I visited Yakima recently for the annual Fresh Hop Festival, and as our cab pulled up to the venue, we noticed a bar with a classic rotating neon sign of a bird hunter shooting his shotgun, with a neon muzzle flash coming out of the end of the barrel. It was unanimous, we had to drink there before leaving town.

As you go in the front door, you walk into a classic American diner. But keep walking and you find a nice mix of a local, old-boys bar and modern sports bar. Several TV's showing football while we were there. A nice selection of craft taps, nothing rare or exotic, but solid, with some thing for every craft fan. The high lite was a couple taps from new, local brewery Bale Breaker. There were also a handful of BMC taps, if somebody in your group is interested.

While at the the fest, I dropped my pint glass on the floor of the Porta-Potty. So I went to the bar, ordered a beer and asked the bartender if she would put my glass in the next rack she washed. Not only did she say yes, she washed it in a load by itself so I wouldn't have to wait too long to get back to the fest. While chatting, I found out she was a grad of the college in my town. Small state.

The menu was varied, with dishes ranging from diner items to pub fare to a few dinner plates. The food we had was basic bar food, decently done. The exception was the pork shanks. They were so tasty and tender, I thought about getting a second order. The prices were on the reasonable side of typical for the type of place this is. If you find yourself in Yakima, I recommend The Sports Center.

The name alone gave me a less than optimistic feeling about the place, but there are not a lot of options in Yakima on a weeknight so we though it would be worth a try. As it turned out it is a decent enough choice. It is most definitely a sports bar (fantasy draft going on in one room while we were there), but not as offensively so as many. It is an odd warren of rooms and oddly big... a diner out front, sports bar like in the middle and kind of transitioning to a live music venue at the rear? They did indeed have some live music the night we were there and it certainly did not help the atmosphere (a wierd hip hop/metal thing as I recall), but your mileage may vary on that. The service was fine, beer selection and quality actually quite good and the food was better than average pub/sports bar fare (pork shank "wings" were a solid choice). If you are spending any amount of time in Yakima, you will probably end up here and you will probably like it, though it will take a special sort to really LOVE it.
