Bomber pour, its pitch black color with a 1 finger tan foamy head that faded slowly and left good spotty lacing. Label states it's 8.7% ABV.

Smells of roasted malts, metallic notes, yeast, cocoa powder, dark fruits, coffee grinds, soy sauce, chocolate and brown sugar. Rich malt notes and chocolate dominate and mask the boozy aspects.

Tastes malty with roasted grains, chocolate malt, toffee, cocoa powder, dark fruits, metallic notes, coffee grinds, chocolate syrup, brown sugar, black licorice, faint soy sauce, chalk, mineral water and ashy flavors. The coffee, chocolate malts and metallic notes are strongest, but this manages to flow down smooth with mild carbonation and a thin overall feel.

Look: Very dark black. 1 - finger head from a 22 oz. Nice lacing! Keeps a nice foam ring even though the head recedes quickly.
Smell: Chocolate and charred wood. Some malt sweetness. Slight plum and raisin.
Taste: Slight hop possibly - but more bitterness from the charred black malt. Dry and roasty. A touch of sweetness - malt, caramel, chocolate. Some tobacco, fig, plum, and graham crackers.
Feel: Thick, rich, and oily.
Overall: A very good brew. Nice balance of heavily roasted grains and sweet caramel flavors. I really did not get any hops, maybe it could have used a touch more. Overall very happy with this one.

Berkshire "The Imperial Russian Stout" 22 oz. bomber bottle purchased for me in October, 2016. Strong dark brew with medium body. Alcohol is a primary flavor component, competing with malt and hops for my attention. It is good enough, but I am cutting it with Founder's PC Pils to reduce the alcohol bite (and the subsequent wooziness).

The Brothers and other most advocates loved it, but I'm less of a fan.

Faintly fruity up front. Dark coffee hits mid palate and adds some heaviness, followed by cooked caramel sweetness on the back end. Very chocolaty also. Sweet chocolate notes reminiscent of Hershey's chocolate syrup. The faint fruitiness runs the length of the palate, popping up here and there. The coffee notes add some bitterness that combines with the hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Hops are slightly earthy with a touch of spice. The hops add some brightness to this dark brew. Slight hint of bitterness on the finish.

Lighter bodied, creamy, slightly oily slick. The carbonation is fantastic, almost nitro like-it's pretty amazing. This is where carbonation definitely adds to drinkability of this brew. The lighter body and carbonation actually makes this beer dangerously drinkable. Watch out. Alcohol is noticeable, if looked for, but well covered.

Wow. A very good beer. On the verge of being great. It's straight forward for an RIS and a tad sweet, but that's nit picking a bit. If you're really judging the thin body is considered a flaw. For me, I really like it the thinner body is a departure from the norm and really works for this particular beer. If you get the chance, grab a couple bottles, you will not be sorry you did.

My least favorite imperial stout. Not sure what the reviews are about, local loyalty?
