"Black & Tan"

A decision for the indecisive, “Shabadoo” is a delicate blend of our Hoosac Tunnel Amber Ale and Drayman’s Porter. Showcasing elements of each, this full-bodied dark brew combines the caramel malt and hop profile of an Amber with the chocolate and mocha notes of the Porter, making for a sublime concoction with broad appeal.

Pours a rust brown. Light is able to show through the full glass, but not clearly. About 3/4 finger of fizzy-ish off-white head. Aroma is a bit muddled. I'm not able to identify specific notes, but it's overall kind of meh. Some nice malts on the tongue, with the overall flavor skewing more tan then black. Somewhat low carb. Overall, it's a good, very drinkable beer.

Thanks to Roy_Hobbs for this one, from his NBS BIF #15 multiple strikes. 16oz can (dated 6/9/21) into 14oz teku. Poured a nearly solid dark brown/light black color with a half inch of tan head that had good retention and very low retention.

The aroma had a nice blend of semi-sweet malts and slightly bitter hops.

Pretty similar on the tongue, with those hops popping out a bit more.

The body was medium, carried good carb, and had a slightly sweet finish that dried out after a few moments.

Drinkability was very good, I could put this into rotation if it were local to me.

Overall, a very nice and enjoyable brew. Certainly worth trying if you see it.

Shabadoo from Berkshire Brewing. Received from @Roy_Hobbs in BIF #14. 16 oz can. Stored at home at 38 degrees. Reviewed 24/11/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on can bottom “BORN ON 06/09/21”. Served at 46.0 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 56.8 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. When rear-lite, translucent ruby.
Head – Average (Maximum two cm, aggressive center pour), almond, short retention, diminishing to a two mm crown and a thin complete cap. Second pour produces a two mm transitory cap with a cloudy pour (unfiltered).
Lacing – None
Aroma – 4 – Initially toasted malt, slightly sweet, and weak dark chocolate, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Taste follows the nose but slightly bitter, no hops, no yeast. No ethanol (6.3 % ABV, NOT marked on container but from website) taste or aroma. No gastric warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, watery, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Looks OK, smells decent, tastes fair. Overall, fair example of a commercially made black and tan.

What do you do when you have to classify a beer that is a blend of two different beers? Do you classify it as the more abundant beer, or do you settle for a compromise of the two styles? Alternatively, you could identify it by its appearance and flavor like a normal person. That's what has been done here.

Having tried Hoosac Tunnel in the past (which is basically alright), I can say it forms the backbone of the beer, while the porter fills in the interesting bits. It pours most like a porter, dark amber with a light brown head that isn't here to stay. I get dark coffee and sweet malt with a touch of vanilla on the nose. The taste is not dissimilar, featuring sweet malt, toffee, and coffee with additives. The porter really takes the reigns here. There is a slight bit of hop bitterness that pervades through the beer, probably from Draymond Green's Porter. The mouthfeel and carbonation are the major contribution of Hoosac tunnel: medium all the way. It truly seems like a concoction of beers rather than a distinct entity.

Having never had a black and tan at a bar or elsewhere, I can't compare it to the real thing. As a side note, black and tan seems like an easy drink to mix. Why not try it yourself? Mix two randos from your fridge and submit it for review. The world is your Shabadoo.

Looks like a highly carbonated (3 fingers of head) dark iced tea. Strong malt on the nose. Sweet malty flavor with a touch of hop bitterness. Light mouthfeel without being too watery.
