Working with the historic flavor and technique of Flanders oude bruin, but weaving in some modern advancements and understanding makes The Rare Barrel's oak aged, wild old brown ale something truly marvelous and, as prescribed, rare.

Shadows of their Eyes reels in the nose with the piquant tangy scent of dark fruit. Stone fruit, pitted fruit, dried fruit and dark berries all seem steeped in a red wine bath and then adorn with an earthy, oaken, slightly pungent perfume. Underneath that complex aromatic blend lies a dark garnet, slighlty tawny ale that casts a tall, loose and expressive froth. But maltiness leads the way with hard candy, toast, light coffee and chocolate as the ale hits the tongue for the first time.

Exuberant carbonation breaks up the maltiness on the middle palate and ushers in a semidry and vinously dark tone. Black cherry, red grape, plum, blackberry and blackcurrant allow for a juicy sparkling red wine taste to seduce the tastebuds before a rounded and more earthiness of fig, prune and raisin develops a nutty and woodsy dryness midway through. Sour, drying and hinging on cider, citrus and merlot rot, a grappa spiciness trails with faint hop bitterness and a firm oaken tannic bite.

Medium bodied and true to flemish form, the malty remnants of nuttiness and robust dark fruit supply a moderate weight to the mouthfeel while the brazen acidity, alcohol and wood spices act to dry the taste and create a surprising refreshment to a beer of such complexity and roundness. An afterglow of dark fruit skins and red wine appease the tastebuds in a medium length aftertaste to close the session.

Reviewed from notes. 750ml bottle shared by Richard - thanks.

A: Pours amberish brown with a half-inch thick off-white head which lingers briefly before settling to the rim and leaves spotty lace.

N: Fruity, oak barrel, sourness, funk, malty grains.

T: Dark fruits, tannic, vinous, funky yeast, mellow sourness, faint roast and chocolate overtones.

M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Finishes mildly prickly, tannic, sour and fruity.

O: The whole being better than the sum of the parts sort of thing. Enjoyed.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber brown body. Medium off-white head.

Smell - Smells like a Flanders. Cherry and wood. Some caramel malt. Sharp vinegar.

Taste - Intense sourness. Vinegary sour. A bit of dark cherry, but mostly caramel malt. Wood and a strong sourness.

Mouthfeel - Very sour. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Man, it's sour. Simple beer, but way too sour.

Founder’s growler into Founder’s glass.

A: Pours a dark mahogany color with a couple fingers of active light brown head that quickly fizzed away into a soft collar. Negligible spotty lace was left down the glass.
S: Woody smelling with musty notes of oak barrel and old attic. There is slightly funky barnyard quality from the brett, and a sharp lactic bite from the lacto. There is a fruity quality to the nose as well, with scents of black currents, cranberries, cherry pits, earthy raspberries and perhaps apple. Mustier smelling than some of their other beers.
T: Lacto tartness and mild acidity hit first alongside notes of red berries and fruits. Musty and damp flavors of woody oak and damp basement follow. The finish is sour and acidic, slightly acetonic, with a hint of powdered chocolate and slightly sweet fruity aftertaste.
M: Medium-full body, spritzy carbonation that finishes splashy, with a slick mouthfeel that has a touch of gritty, cleaning tannins.
O: Probably their most sour that I’ve encountered, with a great straight forward flavor that is highly drinkable and smooth. Not my favorite from TRB, but definitely in their top tier.
