UltraViolet Blackberry Sour AleUltraViolet Blackberry Sour Ale
Notes: UltraViolet is brewed with Oregon Blackberries, soured in the brewhouse and fermented with Belgian yeast. The result is a tart and crisp sour ale, with ripe blackberry flavors radiating through it like cosmic rays traversing the universe.

22oz bottle split between a pair of snifters. Bottled on 07/01/15 (thank you, Ecliptic, for fairly visible and clearly understandable dating).

Pours a slightly purplish/amber color, surprisingly clear, with a big pale head. Smell is generic tart with a slight hint of berries.

Taste is not overpowering, but definitely noticeable blackberry. A surprising creaminess, with a mild tartness.

Mouthfeel is dryish, slightly creamy. Overall, it's not bad. But, it's not super fruity for the fruit lovers, and it's not super tarty for the tart lovers, and it's not very beery...so it might be a compromise no one asked for.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at Tap Union in Vancouver, WA.

Appearance: medium red-gold hue with moderate haze. Head's a thin layer of white foam.

Smell: lightly sweet and a little jammy with a bit of fruit aroma. Not bad.

Taste: just a little sour with a dash of fruitiness. Neither seriously sour or blackberry-ey. Just kind of meh.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: it's an interesting beer. A bit on the bitter side for a fruit beer, and it doesn't really live up to the promise of the name.

Attractive reddish-tinged amber color, really more of a deep glowing orange. It looks like it could be trailing cosmic rays, but I think I'd rather have a tasty plain ale with a handful of berries for a chaser. I am trying to identify that peculiar aroma. Something like raw hamburger and cardboard, but maybe I am hallucinating.

There is nothing funky about this. I wouldn't call it sour. There is some pleasant malty sweetness along with that scratchy, twiggy, bitterish flavor of blackberry seeds. I wish this was either a blackberry flavored straight-ahead ale, or else a wild ale or Belgian yeasty mess. This From the 22 oz bottle bought at Skagit Valley Food Co-Op in Mount Vernon, Wash.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at the LA Beer Talk bottle share.

Summer 2015 release.

Pours a murky reddish-brown with a foamy tan head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, earth, and berry aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour malt, earth, dirt, and berry flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is fairly malt and earth forward for a sour beer.

Serving type: bottle.

Served from 22oz bottle

A — Pours a deep purply blue hue into the glass, there is a bit of a thin, puffy off-white colored head on it that fades rather quickly. Some light spotty lacing left behind.

S — Smells of fresh berries and a little sweetness, there is a bit of a tart undertone but this is mostly sweet, fresh berries.

T — Tastes of blackberry, blueberry, cherry tartness. Tart, but not overly sour, there is definitely a bit of a sweet undertone.

M — Light-Medium bodied, perhaps a bit undercarbed and sweet.

O — Good overall, just would have loved a bit more sour.
